Book excerpt: A new novel by a noted author of science, philosophy and religion with its subplot set in first century China when massive walls were built for protection against Mongolian hordes and alliances were sought with the mushrooming Roman Empire far to the west. An ancient legend suggested the abduction of the Christ child by an ambitious Chinese ambassador, an early traveler, who replaced him in the manger with his own twin son. Influenced by the messianic prophesy, his mission was to return to China with the secret of Roman success and the potential for Chinese superiority. Following his brother's crucifixion and burial, the second twin was mistaken for resurrection. With similar previously undisclosed events in first century Judaea an historical account was contained in the controversial Book of Chan, hidden in the Great Wall for two thousand years. The location was inscribed in a set of Chinese seals with sculptured ivory handles since scattered among world collectors of sigillography. Two Harvard and Oxford professors, meeting on an Oriental cruise, teamed up in search of the legendary book but encountered very rough competition from religious agents determined to prevent disclosure. Amidst touches of romance they uncovered a unique culture at the conflux of the Great Wall and Silk Road. Finding a number of the ancient seals, including several that later had been carried to Venice by the Marco Polo entourage, the academic couple succeeded in computer analysis producing a usable matrix map. Written in the genre of The DaVinci Code, the book includes an important philosophical addendum on the search for greater realism in biblical understanding that strongly influenced the creation of this unique and somewhat controversial story. Proof readers see it as a best seller and the next major "Hollywod Project".

Book The Contradictions of the Legacy of Brown V Board of Education Topeka 1954

Download or read book The Contradictions of the Legacy of Brown V Board of Education Topeka 1954 written by Dianne Smith and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-22 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On May 17, 1954, the Supreme Court ruled that separate school facilities were inherently unequal and thus unconstitutional and illegal. Today, 50 years after this landmark decision, much debate surrounds the efficacy of the ruling, particularly for its impact on the education of children of color in U.S. schools. In reality, Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas, was never solely about education; neither did the case include only plaintiffs from Topeka. Both points are important to note as we reflect on the legacy of Brown a half century after the ruling. This journal offers articles, an interview, book reviews and a media review around this area.

Book excerpt: "A devastating attack upon the dominance of atheism in science today." Giovanni Fazio, Senior Physicist, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics The debate over the ultimate source of truth in our world often pits science against faith. In fact, some high-profile scientists today would have us abandon God entirely as a source of truth about the universe. In this book, two professional astronomers push back against this notion, arguing that the science of today is not in a position to pronounce on the existence of God—rather, our notion of truth must include both the physical and spiritual domains. Incorporating excerpts from a letter written in 1615 by famed astronomer Galileo Galilei, the authors explore the relationship between science and faith, critiquing atheistic and secular understandings of science while reminding believers that science is an important source of truth about the physical world that God created.

Book Enacting the Bible in medieval and early modern drama

Download or read book Enacting the Bible in medieval and early modern drama written by Eva von Contzen and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2020-03-13 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thirteen chapters in this collection open up new horizons for the study of biblical drama by putting special emphasis on multitemporality, the intersections of biblical narrative and performance, and the strategies employed by playwrights to rework and adapt the biblical source material in Catholic, Protestant and Jewish culture. Aspects under scrutiny include dramatic traditions, confessional and religious rites, dogmas and debates, conceptualisations of performance, and audience response. The contributors stress the co-presence of biblical and contemporary concerns in the periods under discussion, conceiving of biblical drama as a central participant in the dynamic struggle to both interpret and translate the Bible.

Book excerpt: A sharply intelligent, explosively honest, and laugh-out-loud funny look at the state of masculinity and how to be a man, for fans of Jon Ronson and Matt Haig. If ever there was an urgent need for a frank understanding of what's going on with men, it is now. Male rage and frustration have driven resurgent populism, mass shootings, and epidemics of addiction and violence. Powerful men who have abused their positions for decades have been and are being #MeToo–outed and dismissed. The patriarchy, that solid bedrock of male power for thousands of years, seems to be crumbling. In Future Man, with his characteristic intelligence and humor, Tim Samuels assesses the state of contemporary manhood, its conflicts, confusions, and challenges. Trapped in bodies barely changed since cavemen days, men are contending with the stresses of corporate culture, lifelong commitment, rampant depression, and crazy expectations to be successful at work and at home. But how can you hunt and gather in an open-plan office? Why do men make up to 95 percent of Fortune 500 CEOs yet 93 percent of the prison population? Why do men commit suicide at more than three times the rate of women? Drawing on his own experience and reporting, Samuels addresses such topics as dating, aging, fatherhood, porn, violence, mental health, and the trouble with monogamy as well as issues related to toxic masculinity, the man box, gender roles, and role models. The American edition has been updated and includes a new preface.

  • Pages : 154 pages

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Persecution, false accusations, and philosophical criticisms were all a common part of the life of the church in the second century. Many Christian writers took up the mighty pen to defend the Christian faith. Though often overlooked, Theophilus of Antioch was one of these apologetic writers who boldly identified himself as a Christian and a believer in God’s word. In his only remaining work, Ad Autolycum, Theophilus shows the irrationality of the pagan worldview and defends the Christian faith with a firm commitment to the authority of Scripture. The Scriptures are foundational to his defense of the Christian faith. He presents the Scriptures, both from the Old and New Testaments, as a faithful guide and guarantee of truth on the nature of God, the world, and ethics. The Scriptures were efficacious in his own conversion to Christianity, and so he uses those same divine words in order to call his pagan friend from idolatry to the truth of the one God. In this book, Taylor Evan Walls offers a systematic presentation of Theophilus’ understanding of the nature of Scripture, and shows how this doctrine provided the foundation and structure for his defense of Christianity.
