Book The Indian Princes and their States

Download or read book The Indian Princes and their States written by Barbara N. Ramusack and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-01-08 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the princes of India have been caricatured as oriental despots and British stooges, Barbara Ramusack's study argues that the British did not create the princes. On the contrary, many were consummate politicians who exercised considerable degrees of autonomy until the disintegration of the princely states after independence. Ramusack's synthesis has a broad temporal span, tracing the evolution of the Indian kings from their pre-colonial origins to their roles as clients in the British colonial system. The book breaks ground in its integration of political and economic developments in the major princely states with the shifting relationships between the princes and the British. It represents a major contribution, both to British imperial history in its analysis of the theory and practice of indirect rule, and to modern South Asian history, as a portrait of the princes as politicians and patrons of the arts.

Book The Arabian Frontier of the British Raj

Download or read book The Arabian Frontier of the British Raj written by James Onley and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2007-11-22 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Arabian Frontier of the British Raj is a study of one of the most forbidding frontier zones of Britain's Indian Empire. The Gulf Residency, responsible for Britain's relationship with Eastern Arabia and Southern Persia, was part of an extensive network of political residencies that surrounded and protected British India. Based on extensive archival research in both the Gulf and Britain, this book examines how Britain's Political Resident in the Gulf and his very small cadre of British officers maintained the Pax Britannica on the waters of the Gulf, protected British interests throughout the region, and managed political relations with the dozens of Arab rulers and governors on both shores of the Gulf. James Onley looks at the secret to the Gulf Residency's effectiveness - the extent to which the British worked within the indigenous political systems of the Gulf. He examines the way in which Arab rulers in need of protection collaborated with the Resident to maintain the Pax Britannica, while influential men from affluent Arab, Persian, and Indian merchant families served as the Resident's 'native agents' (compradors) in over half of the political posts within the Gulf Residency.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The decline of the Mughal Empire, the political ascendency of the British East India Company, a number of revivalist powers (the Sikhs, the Marathas, the Rohillas, etc.), and a large number of Indian princely states, resulted in redrawing the political spaces across India. In the process, the minting rights of the titular Mughal king and of the neo-independent Indian princely rulers were severely curbed by the dominant colonial power, both for political as well as economic reasons. The territorial expansion of the British Empire in India was invariably followed by the abolition of the native mints and the introduction of the imperial currency in the annexed territories. Indeed, the ‘sikka’ followed the flag. By presenting the monetary history of this period, this volume seeks to address some of the questions, viz. the effect of money supply on trade, prices of commodities and services, wage structures in different regions as well as on the administrative and military health of a political power. In this unique anthology, published studies along with unpublished archival records have been integrated into an overall theme. Together with a comprehensive bibliography-cum-list for further readings this volume is aimed to serve as a veritable reference tool.

Book Famous Indian Chiefs I Have Known

Download or read book Famous Indian Chiefs I Have Known written by Oliver Otis Howard and published by . This book was released on 1916 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Major General Oliver Otis Howard, a graduate of Bowdoin College and the U.S. Military Academy, is known for his Civil War record, campaign against the Nez Perce, and many writings. Regarded in his time as enlightened in matters of race, Howard headed the Freedman's Bureau and was a co-founder of Howard University. He left the Bureau in 1872 when assigned to subjugate the Chiracahua Apaches. President U.S. Grant allegedly selected Howard for western military leadership because of his Christian and humanitarian beliefs. He was given command of the Department of the Columbia in 1874, and subsequently led the U.S. Army campaign against the Nez Perce in 1877. As Major General, Howard was in the awkward position of having to follow orders and federal law when his beliefs or his personal feelings about tribal leaders or the tribes themselves were sometimes in contradiction with his mission. He wrote Famous Indian Chiefs I Have Known for children late in his life, along with a similar work, My Life And Experiences Among Our Hostile Indians, for adults. While he did not actually meet all individuals featured in his book for juveniles, nor were all of them truly chiefs, his experiences in the American west and northwest brought him in contact with many tribal leaders.
