Book Designing and Implementing a National Research and Education Network

Download or read book Designing and Implementing a National Research and Education Network written by Sybrand Brink and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2010-07 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work examines the factors that need to be considered when designing a national research and education network (NREN). It discusses the needs of the research and education community and what makes a NREN unique from other networks. It considers the different options available regarding transmission mediums, - technologies and higher level network protocols, and suggests principles that should be followed to obtain an optimum design. These design principles are then applied to the specific case of designing a 100 Gbps+ NREN for South Africa. The network is currently still under construction with funding from the national government, and preliminary findings regarding the implementation of the network are given.

Book The Role and Status of National Research and Education Networks in Africa

Download or read book The Role and Status of National Research and Education Networks in Africa written by Michael Foley and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this report is to provide guidance to governments, institutions, and development partners on how to approach the provision of advanced information and communication technology (ICT) services to the higher education and research community in Africa. The timing is appropriate as it coincides with a transformation in the telecom infrastructure and services on the continent as fiber optic connectivity, both undersea and on land, is expanding at a rapid pace. The premise of the report that the organization of ICT services and connectivity is best provided by a dedicated organization called the National Research and Education Network (NREN) is based on international best practice and the current plans of the stakeholders in the region. In the following pages, the nature of NRENs and the case for their establishment is outlined and the story of their development in Africa up to their current status is described in operation of NRENs are discussed as a prelude to a guidance note on how to go about establishing or strengthening an NREN, with recommendations to the government, the private sector, institutions, and development partners.

Book Realizing the Information Future

Download or read book Realizing the Information Future written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1994-02-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The potential impact of the information superhighwayâ€"what it will mean to daily work, shopping, and entertainmentâ€"is of concern to nearly everyone. In the rush to put the world on-line, special issues have emerged for researchers, educators and students, and library specialists. At the same time, the research and education communities have a valuable head start when it comes to understanding computer communications networks, particularly Internet. With its roots in the research community, the Internet computer network now links tens of millions of people and extends well into the commercial world. Realizing the Information Future is written by key players in the development of Internet and other data networks. The volume highlights what we can learn from Internet and how the research, education, and library communities can take full advantage of the information highway's promised reach through time and space. This book presents a vision for the proposed national information infrastructure (NII): an open data network sending information services of all kinds, from suppliers of all kinds, to customers of all kinds, across network providers of all kinds. Realizing the Information Future examines deployment issues for the NII in light of the proposed system architecture, with specific discussion of the needs of the research and education communities. What is the role of the "institution" when everyone is online in their homes and offices? What are the consequences when citizens can easily access legal, medical, educational, and government services information from a single system? These and many other important questions are explored. The committee also looks at the development of principles to address the potential for abuse and misuse of the information highway, covering: Equitable and affordable access to the network. Reasonable approaches to controlling the rising tide of electronic information. Rights and responsibilities relating to freedom of expression, intellectual property, individual privacy, and data security. Realizing the Information Future includes a wide-ranging discussion of costs, pricing, and federal funding for network development and a discussion of the federal role in making the best technical choices to ensure that the expected social and economic benefits of the NII are realized. The time for the research and education communities to have their say about the information highway is before the ribbon is cut. Realizing the Information Future provides a timely, readable, and comprehensive exploration of key issuesâ€"important to computer scientists and engineers, researchers, librarians and their administrators, educators, and individuals interested in the shape of the information network that will soon link us all.
