Book The Revival of Israel

Download or read book The Revival of Israel written by Moses Hess and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Its author, Moses Hess (1812-1875), was a German socialist who brought his revolutionary zeal to the preaching of Jewish nationalism. The Revival of Israel combines a fervent sense of national destiny with ethical socialism and religious conservatism. Hess believed that Papal Rome represented the source of anti-Semitism and that universal ideals of justice and equality were inherent in the history and aspirations of the Jewish people, who could fulfill their historical promise only in their ancient Holy Land under their own rule. Without spiritual regeneration, Judaism was in danger of becoming nothing more than a creed or cult; too many German Jews had already assimilated. He looked above all to France, home of revolution, to protect the Jews, considering it the "sacred duty of Christians to help" them regain their promised land. Unnoticed at first, The Revival of Israel was later discovered and adopted by the Zionists.

Book Tools for Effective Prayer

Download or read book Tools for Effective Prayer written by Clarence Washington Sr. and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2016-02-12 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just like your lifestyle, your current prayer life is also perfectly designed to produce the result you are getting. If you want a prayer life that will enable you to experience God’s presence like you never have before and move Him to bless you like He has never blessed you before, then you must start praying like you have never prayed before! Tools for Effective Prayer will teach you how to do that! There are some mechanics of prayers, such as persistency and fervency, that are essential for effective prayer. However, without the proper dynamics of prayer working to produce spiritual power in a person’s life—the positive effects of the discipline of proper mechanics are nullified. Such is also the case with the contents of prayer. If one’s prayers don’t include the essential contents—effectiveness (or power) will be greatly diluted.

Book Bialik the Hebrew Bible and the Literature of Nationalism

Download or read book Bialik the Hebrew Bible and the Literature of Nationalism written by David Aberbach and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-25 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the life and poetry of Chaim Nachman Bialik (1873–1934) in the context of European national literature between the French Revolution and World War I, showing how he helped create a modern Hebrew national culture, spurring the revival of Hebrew as a spoken language. The author begins with Bialik’s background in the Tsarist Empire, contextualizing Jewish powerlessness in Eastern Europe in the late nineteenth century. As European anti-Semitism grew, Bialik emerged at the vanguard of a modern Hebrew national movement, building on ancient biblical and rabbinic tradition and speaking to Jewish concerns in neo-prophetic poems, love poems, poems for children, and folk poems. This book makes accessible a broad but representative selection of Bialik’s poetry in translation. Alongside this, a variety of national poets are considered from across Europe, including Solomos in Greece, Mickiewicz in Poland, Shevchenko in Ukraine, Njegoš in Serbia, Petőfi in Hungary, and Yeats in Ireland. Aberbach argues that Bialik as Jewish national poet cannot be understood except in the dual context of ancient Jewish nationalism and modern European nationalism, both political and cultural. Written in clear and accessible prose, this book will interest those studying modern European nationalism, Hebrew literature, Jewish history, and anti-Semitism.

Book Halakha and the Challenge of Israeli Sovereignty

Download or read book Halakha and the Challenge of Israeli Sovereignty written by Asaf Yedidya and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-05-24 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Halakha and the Challenge of Israeli Sovereignty examines the issues surrounding national, political, and religious sovereignty from the vantage point of halakha and its evolution. The work analyzes the efforts of the interpretative communities who adhered to halakha—the rabbinical authorities—as well as other groups who endeavored to help or to change it: the Jewish jurists in Eretz Israel who sought to integrate sections of halakha into the Jewish collective; and the religious academics who wanted more meaningful recognition of halakha in non-halakhic values. The assessment extends from the beginning of the Jewish national movement in the last two decades of the 19th century to the first two decades of the State of Israel, when weighty problems arose that required a halakhic response to the challenge of sovereignty. In this, the volume sheds light on the pliable nature of the concept of halakha, particularly in conjunction with its application to the notion of sovereignty.

Book The Prophets and the Apostolic Witness

Download or read book The Prophets and the Apostolic Witness written by Andrew T. Abernethy and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2023-10-17 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How should Christians read prophetic literature? Questions abound both in the academy and the church as to how to engage the prophets, particularly in light of the New Testament. The Gospel writers and the church fathers all read and appealed to the Old Testament, but are we as modern-day readers supposed to take the same approach? The Prophets and the Apostolic Witness is a dialogue among scholars that identifies the interpretive methods used throughout history while also charting a constructive way forward for our own approach to reading the Major Prophets. This comprehensive volume brings together experts on Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel to illuminate the following topics: How the Apostles Read the Major Prophets as Christian Scripture Limits on Reading the Major Prophets as Christian Scripture Reading the Major Prophets in the Footsteps of the Apostles The History of Interpretation of the Major Prophets as Christian Scripture Preaching the Major Prophets as Christian Scripture This collaborative endeavor offers fresh and helpful insights to scholars, students, and pastors alike as they engage with the text of the Major Prophets.
