Book excerpt: This book embodies 21 review articles contributed by subject experts of various areas of industrial microbiology. The articles are devoted to pharma industries, food and enzyme industries, textile industry, agro-industry and cottage industry. Yeast is one of the important microorganisms which have been used to produce beverages, alcohols and fermented food commodities for a very long time. In recent years, it has been the first choice among eukaryotes to use in recombinant technology. Yeast and Spirulina are being used and marketed as Single Cell Protein (SCP). Mushrooms have been used by humans down the ages. In addition to a rich source of mycoprotein, they have medicinal values also against many ailments. Number of bioactive novel compounds is increasing with the discovery of microbial species and newer groups of microorganisms. Some chapters are devoted to microbial bioinoculants used as biofertilizers because they are rich source of nitrogen and phosphorus for both legumes and non-legumes. They are being manufactured and sold in market with different trade names. In addition, several microbial enzymes have been produced and commercialized by various industries, but highly active and potential enzymes produced through recombinant DNA technology hold much importance. For example, microbial proteases find application in detergent leather, food and pharma industries and provide eco-friendly technology for bioremediation. Laccase has been worked out to be a good tool for bioremediation of non-degradable wastes and xenobiotic chemicals. Besides, laccase-based biosensors have also been constructed which can be used for phenol determination, monitoring of lignin and plant flavonoids. Various microbial phytases as feed supplemented have been used in freshwater and marine aquaculture for improving the growth performance of fishes. Nowadays aquaculture is growing rapidly to meet increasing food demand throughout the world for high quality fish. More than 16,000 bioactive compounds have been isolated from actinomycetes alone including antibiotics, enzymes, vitamins, amino acids, siderophores and nanoparticles. Biosynthesis of nanoparticles by bacteria, actinomycetes and algae has been reported and work is being done nationally and internationally.

Book Microbial Resource Conservation

Download or read book Microbial Resource Conservation written by Sushil K. Sharma and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-31 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers broad areas in the conservation of microorganisms. It addresses the short, medium and long-term preservation of agriculturally important microorganisms, as well as culture collections and their roles. The respective chapters address topics such as conventional approaches to bacterial, fungal and algal preservation, as well as methods and strategies for preserving recalcitrant microorganisms. Readers will also find the latest insights into the preservation of vesicular-arbuscular (VA) fungi and ecology, diversity and conservation of endophytes, and entamopathogenic fungi. Microbes of animal and dairy origin, their preservation and biosafety issues are also explored. Microorganisms are the silent and unseen majority of life on Earth, and are characterized by a high degree of genetic and metabolic diversity. It is well documented that no branch of science or society is unaffected by microbial interventions. Researchers have documented microorganisms from such extreme and unique environments as deserts and hydrothermal vents, and with specific traits that are currently being exploited in agriculture, industry, medicine and biotechnological applications. Such great potential can only be found in microorganisms. The aim of this book – the first entirely devoted to the conservation of microorganisms, and to regulatory mechanisms for access and benefits sharing as per Biological Diversity (BD) Act 2002 – is to promote awareness of our world’s microbial wealth, and to introduce readers to strategies and methodologies for the conservation of microorganisms, which could ultimately save human life on Earth.

Book Size Limits of Very Small Microorganisms

Download or read book Size Limits of Very Small Microorganisms written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-09-13 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How small can a free-living organism be? On the surface, this question is straightforward-in principle, the smallest cells can be identified and measured. But understanding what factors determine this lower limit, and addressing the host of other questions that follow on from this knowledge, require a fundamental understanding of the chemistry and ecology of cellular life. The recent report of evidence for life in a martian meteorite and the prospect of searching for biological signatures in intelligently chosen samples from Mars and elsewhere bring a new immediacy to such questions. How do we recognize the morphological or chemical remnants of life in rocks deposited 4 billion years ago on another planet? Are the empirical limits on cell size identified by observation on Earth applicable to life wherever it may occur, or is minimum size a function of the particular chemistry of an individual planetary surface? These questions formed the focus of a workshop on the size limits of very small organisms, organized by the Steering .Group for the Workshop on Size Limits of Very Small Microorganisms and held on October 22 and 23, 1998. Eighteen invited panelists, representing fields ranging from cell biology and molecular genetics to paleontology and mineralogy, joined with an almost equal number of other participants in a wide-ranging exploration of minimum cell size and the challenge of interpreting micro- and nano-scale features of sedimentary rocks found on Earth or elsewhere in the solar system. This document contains the proceedings of that workshop. It includes position papers presented by the individual panelists, arranged by panel, along with a summary, for each of the four sessions, of extensive roundtable discussions that involved the panelists as well as other workshop participants.

This book was released on 2017-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of microbiology and biotechnology are intertwined since time immemorial however the ties between the two areas became prominent in the last century. The areas provided various products which enriched mankind in various ways mainly in the form of food and succeeded in producing medicines. There was no technology which provoked the humans to understand the mechanisms involved whilst using microbes. In previous millennia, microbes were utilized by humans for several needs; however there was no scope of understanding the machinery to the complete detail. The nineteenth century bore an outstanding scientist named Louis Pasteur who pioneered in industrial microbiology. His understanding of microbes laid a path to the other discoveries which made human life more comfortable and also increment in life span is clearly noticed. The fight against infectious diseases has progressed with the advancements in microbiology. The era of mass production of the microbial products initiated mainly with citric acid production. The Second World War provided an essentiality to understand the process of preservation of products in aseptic conditions. The economically viable products such as vaccines, cytokines, pharmaceuticals and foods were produced in a large scale due to advancements in genetic engineering in the seventies. The applied microbiology and biotechnology are playing a crucial role in dictating national economy, medicine, agriculture, environmental protection and pharmaceuticals. The main reason to devise this part of literature is to introduce and summarize the current state of knowledge which concerns microbial application in large scale production lines. This book is built on my experiences with several research fronts during these two decades. The field of industrial microbiology and biotechnology deals with exploitation of microbes is a systematic manner in order to obtain goods and services for human welfare. The two immediate aspect of industrial microbiology are fermentation processes and service delivery especially in pollution control. It is assumed that the reader may have got some learned experience in microbiology to understand this book. The students of any life sciences and chemistry can understand the concept delivered in this book without any hassles. The application of microbiology in industrial biotechnology is broadly emphasized in this book. The chapters were designed to let the reader take a systematic study without getting struck at any concept and never feel confused.I would like to express my gratitude to all the professors and researchers who provided me variety of inputs to make this literature work a success. All the valuable time they invested in me to bring out this book is duly appreciated and some of the reflections which they expect are in due till the book is read by many of the enthusiastic students.

Book Culture Collections Perspectives and Problems

Download or read book Culture Collections Perspectives and Problems written by Stanley Morris Martin and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book should be of particular interest to all who, through the nature of their research, are required to maintain cultures of micro-organisms and other cells in a healthy and stable state. It is based on papers and discussion at the Specialists' Conference on Culture Collections, Ottawa, Canada, August 1962, sponsored by the Canadian Committee on Culture Collections of Micro-organisms. This first international Specialists' Conference was organized with several aims. It was hoped that a discussion of the role of culture collections would make clear their importance in science and in industry. Secondly, a consideration of the organization of collections was planned not only to aid workers actively concerned with culture collections but also to give administrators a clear pictures of organizational problems. Thirdly, it was hoped to make an examination of the fundamental and technical aspects of the reservation of micro-organisms and other cells, with special emphasis on the maintenance of physiological, morphological and genetic characteristics. The speakers of the Conference strove to elucidate what is known of the subject-matter, and also to draw attention to areas of ignorance, with the hope of stimulating research in these areas. The symposium speakers included authorities from many countries: J.F. Morgan (Canada); R. Wahl (France); H.P.R. Seeliger (Germany); T. Nei (Japan); A.L. van Beverwijk. T.O. Wikén (the Netherlands); B.L. Brady, S.T. Cowan, E.A. George, H. Proom, J.M. Shewan, R.E.O. Williams (United Kingdoms); S.G. Bradley, D.H. Braendle, W.E. Brown, R.E. Buchanan, W.A. Clark, R. Donovick, R.E. Gordon, W.C. Haynes, R.J. Heckly, N.D. Levine, P. Mazur, K.B. Raper, E.G. Simmons, E.O. Stapley, M.P. Starr, R.C. Starr, R.E. Stevenson, C.S. Stulberg, R.L. Thompson (U.S.A.); and N.A. Krasilnikov (U.S.S.R.). In addition to the symposium papers, eight research communications are presented.
