He crafted German into a language of refined literary expression that paved the way for writers such as Gottfried von Strassburg, Walther von der Vogelweide, and Wolfram von Eschenbach. This volume presents the English reader for the first time with the complete works of Hartmann in readable, idiomatic English. Hartmann's literary efforts cover all the major genres and themes of medieval courtly literature. His Arthurian romances, Erec and Iwein, which he modeled after Chr&étien de Troyes, introduced the Arthurian world to German audiences and set the standard for later German writers. His lyric poetry treats many aspects of courtly love, including fine examples of the crusading song. His dialogue on love delineates the theory of courtly relationships between the sexes and the quandary the lover experiences. Love for oneself, love for God and love for another person are the most common denominations and all three are present in the works of Middle High German author Hartmann von Aue and medieval mystic Mechthild von Magdeburg. The relationship between the interrelating types of love differs from text to text but each enriches the other and results in an interesting experience for the reader. Hartmann’s Der Arme Heinrich may have been written out of love for God, as is suggested in the introduction (Von Aue, line 25) but the titular Heinrich’s sexual love is at the heart of the plot. Equally, Mechthild’s works may aim to distance itself from such expression of sexual love as its author was a nun. However, through the exploration of her own love for God, as will be discussed, she cannot entirely avoid it.

However, his tale is of more than antiquarian interest. Its subjects?the individual in conflict with society and the destructive force of possessive love?are modern, and its language, when transferred into prose, is more direct and lucid than most contemporary writing. Indeed, it was the conviction that the story deserved a much larger audience than that of medieval scholars which inspired this translation, the first into English.
