Book Imaginary Homelands

Download or read book Imaginary Homelands written by Salman Rushdie and published by Penguin. This book was released on 1992-05-01 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Read every page of this book; better still, re-read them. The invocation means no hardship, since every true reader must surely be captivated by Rushdie’s masterful invention and ease, the flow of wit and insight and passion. How literature of the highest order can serve the interests of our common humanity is freshly illustrated here: a defence of his past, a promise for the future, and a surrender to nobody or nothing whatever except his own all-powerful imagination.”-Michael Foot, Observer Salman Rushdie’s Imaginary Homelands is an important record of one writer’s intellectual and personal odyssey. The seventy essays collected here, written over the last ten years, cover an astonishing range of subjects –the literature of the received masters and of Rushdie’s contemporaries; the politics of colonialism and the ironies of culture; film, politicians, the Labour Party, religious fundamentalism in America, racial prejudice; and the preciousness of the imagination and of free expression. For this paperback edition, the author has written a new essay to mark the third anniversary of the fatwa.

Book Charles D Oyly s Lost Satire of British India

Download or read book Charles D Oyly s Lost Satire of British India written by Hermione de Almeida and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings to light an extraordinary satiric epic on Britain’s empire, one suppressed right after its publication in 1828. Tom Raw, the Griffin, written and illustrated by the Romantic artist Charles D’Oyly, is vital, engaging, morally earnest, and trenchant in its critique—and wickedly funny in its observations and depictions of British India. Known in art circles for his Indian landscapes, D’Oyly was born in Bengal; he returned there from England at age 16 to serve in increasingly titular posts in the occupying government; by 1818, he was a full-time artist in Patna. In his story of a young English cadet serving his country in India, D’Oyly writes and draws as an outsider to Britain’s imperial project abroad—but with the knowledge of an insider. His epic poem traces the political and cultural fault lines of Britain’s nascent empire. Like Lord Byron’s Don Juan (1819-24), Tom Raw is exuberantly comic and terrifyingly serious in its prescience on the prospects of nineteenth-century Britain and future world empires. Tom Raw has a real, original place in the literature, art and culture of its age, and is a key entity in the study of global Romanticism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Woman of Colour is a unique literary account of a black heiress’ life immediately after the abolition of the British slave trade. Olivia Fairfield, the biracial heroine and orphaned daughter of a slaveholder, must travel from Jamaica to England, and as a condition of her father’s will either marry her Caucasian first cousin or become dependent on his mercenary elder brother and sister-in-law. As Olivia decides between these two conflicting possibilities, her letters recount her impressions of Britain and its inhabitants as only a black woman could record them. She gives scathing descriptions of London, Bristol, and the British, as well as progressive critiques of race, racism, and slavery. The narrative follows her life from the heights of her arranged marriage to its swift descent into annulment and destitution, only to culminate in her resurrection as a self-proclaimed “widow” who flouts the conventional marriage plot. The appendices, which include contemporary reviews of the novel, historical documents on race and inheritance in Jamaica, and examples of other women of colour in early British prose fiction, will further inspire readers to rethink issues of race, gender, class, and empire from an African woman’s perspective.
