Download or read book Krishna Charitra written by ALO SHOME and published by V&S Publishers. This book was released on 2012-11-15 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Krishna Charitra is a famous Bengali classic where Bankim Chandra endeavours to discover Sri Krishna, the real person, behind centuries of myths and legends. Written in 1886, this was the first instance where the character of Krishna is studied from a pragmatic and questioning perspective. Like his novel Ananda Math, Krishna Charitra originates from Bankim Chandra's passionate feeling of patriotism. He wanted to uphold Sri Krishna as not just a mythological figure, but an ideal Indian character, whom other Indians could look up to. Sri Aurobindo says, Bankim Chandra poured over the Bhagavad Gita and the Vedas striving to catch the deeper and sacred sense of those profound writings. To give that to his countrymen was the strenuous aim of Krishna Charitra. In this translation of Krishna Charitra, several passages of Bankim's academic discussions have been omitted, so as to make it easier for the common reader. Also deleted are the criticisms on the European people that Bankim Chandra includes in his book from time to time. Otherwise, the text strictly follows the structure and the content of the original dissertation. #v&spublishers

Download or read book Shadow Boxing with the Gods written by Vijay N. Shankar and published by One Point Six Technology Pvt Ltd. This book was released on 2014-08-20 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Old order changeth Yielding Place to new Lest one good custom Should corrupt the world Alfred, Lord Tennyson SHADOW BOXING WITH THE GODS is a tour through many traditions and beliefs in the history of Man, to arrive at the truths we recognize today. It is a book of aggressive but persistently rational thought, which deconstructs the beliefs and theologies that have accompanied mankind from the earliest times and often controlled human destinies. While many of these beliefs help people to find meaning to the great mystery of life, they nevertheless crave to be understood in the context of our modern environment. Based on the core truth that the greatest ideas, if carried to extremes, can become ridiculous and hurt people, the book traces the diverse strands of human belief in various civilizations, starting with fantasy and myth-making. Ideas about life, divinity, nature and community, have enriched existence but have also caused mayhem and tyranny through blind beliefs that fed fundamentalism and terror. The Nazi holocaust, the burning of witches and heretics at the stake, the indignity of widowhood and caste practices in India, were all the result of beliefs that overpowered the minds of large sections of people. Today, more than ever before, we are equipped with science, reason and information, to embrace the spiritual and the humane, while freeing ourselves from the clutches of superstition and ignorance – thus achieving a far deeper understanding about our individual and collective existence.

Download or read book Dancing with Shadows written by Shiraz Pradhan and published by Partridge Publishing. This book was released on 2014-09-30 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific determinism, Tarot cards, Cinema, Music, Love, and Quantum Physics. The narrator negotiates love, murder, and war in this captivating philosophical journey. Pradhan is exceptional in showing the narrator's holistic approach to understanding. Quantum physics and love. A united theory of everything? It is an idealistic adolescent goal, and this is what makes Dancing with Shadows so interesting. This is a coming of age story of a young man in East Africa whose intuition tells him that these things are all connected. In his growing self-awareness and world weariness, he is obsessed with connecting the dots of his life in order to reveal some profound significance (i. e. the "music of God"). Who hasn't pondered such questions? How is my life unique or significant? How much more would life mean to me if I understood, say, the music of God...and what is the music of God? Although he is a young man continually preoccupied with sex and love, he is essentially a philosopher. He wants to understand things such as the life application of a quantum wave collapse or the difference between sex and love. This story is a Hamlet-esque self-portrait in his constant questioning. It echoes the uncertain and awkward, yet outwardly confident manner of Holden Caulfield. But above all, this story made me think of the kind quest for mystical self-importance that I recall from Joyce's narrator in "Araby."

Download or read book Finding Radha written by Gokhale Namita and published by Penguin Enterprise. This book was released on 2018-11-14 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who was Radha, and why has she captured the imagination of so many writers across centuries? No other goddess combines the elements of bhakti and shringara quite as exquisitely as the divine milkmaid. She spans a vivid rainbow of imagery-from the playfulness of the Ras Lila to the soulfulness of her undying love, from the mystic allure of her depictions in poetry, art and sculpture to her enduring legacy in Vrindavan. In a way that sets her apart from other female consorts, Radha is idealized and dreamed of in a way that is almost more elemental than mythical. Namita Gokhale and Malashri Lal, who brought us In Search of Sita: Revisiting Mythology, now present an anthology on the mysterious Radha, the epitome of love, who defies all conventional codes yet transcends social prohibitions through the power of the spiritual and the sensual, the sacred and the erotic. Finding Radha is the first of its kind: a collection of poetry, prose and translation that enter the historical as well as the artistic dimensions of the eternal romance of Radha and Krishna.

Book excerpt: Making Kin: Ecofeminist Essays from Singapore contemplates and re-centres Singapore women in the overlapping discourses of family, home, ecology and nation. For the first time, this collection of ecofeminist essays focuses on the crafts, minds, bodies and subjectivities of a diverse group of women making kin with the human and non-human world as they navigate their lives. From ruminations on caregiving, to surreal interspecies encounters, to indigenous ways of knowing, these women writers chart a new path on the map of Singapore’s literary scene, writing urgently about gender, nature, climate change, reciprocity and other critical environmental issues. In a climate-changed world where vital connections are lost, Making Kin is an essential collection that blurs boundaries between the personal and the political. It is a revolutionary approach towards intersectional environmentalism.
