Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Conrad Rudolph studies and reconstructs Hugh of Saint Victor's forty-two-page written work, The Mystic Ark, which describes the medieval painting of the same name. In medieval written sources, works of art are not often referred to, let alone described in any detail. Almost completely ignored by art historians because of the immense difficulty of its text, Hugh of Saint Victor's Mystic Ark (c.1125–30) is among the most unusual sources we have for an understanding of medieval artistic culture. Depicting all time, all space, all matter, all human history and all spiritual striving, this highly polemical painting deals with a series of cultural issues crucial in the education of society's elite during one of the great periods of intellectual change in Western history.

Book excerpt: You can’t hide in an RPG forever. Eighteen years ago Tom, a barber college student, got trapped in the Monsters, Maces and Magic game world as Josiah the thief. The first two adventures saw all of Tom’s party members, also trapped within the game world, perish within the fetid depths of the Dark Heart Swamp. His subsequent stint adventuring with NPCs proved short lived. He preferred survival. Over time, Tom became Josiah, adopting a life blending in with the game world’s NPCs. He gave up advancing as a thief, trained as a lay healer, and works as a barber, cutting hair, pulling teeth, lancing boils and functioning as a low-level operative within the local thieves’ guild. But life, even one lived as a faux NPC, can get interesting. Such happens when a young half-goblin thief named Gurk shows up in Josiah’s shop, looking for information. Little did the pair know that the unobtrusive barber shop would become a focal point in a brewing guild war. Praise for Monsters, Maces, and Magic “Exciting and hilarious! It feels like a true game with friends.” Dueling Ogres Podcast

Book The Collected Short Stories

Download or read book The Collected Short Stories written by Lewis Carroll and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-05-25 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This meticulously edited Lewis Carroll collection includes: A Tangled Tale Bruno's Revenge and Other Stories What the Tortoise Said to Achilles A Tangled Tale is a collection of ten brief humorous stories by Lewis Carroll, published serially between April 1880 and March 1885.The stories, or Knots as Carroll calls them, present mathematical problems. In a later issue, Carroll gives the solution to a Knot and discusses readers' answers. The mathematical interpretations of the Knots are not always straightforward. The ribbing of readers answering wrongly – giving their names – was not always well received. Short story "Bruno's Revenge" was originally published in 1867. Some years later, in 1873 or 1874, Carroll had the idea to use this piece as the core for a longer story. Much of the rest of the novel he compiled from notes of ideas and dialogue which he had collected over the years. What the Tortoise Said to Achilles, written by Lewis Carroll in 1895 for the philosophical journal Mind, is a brief dialogue which problematises the foundations of logic. The title alludes to one of Zeno's paradoxes of motion, in which Achilles could never overtake the tortoise in a race. In Carroll's dialogue, the tortoise challenges Achilles to use the force of logic to make him accept the conclusion of a simple deductive argument. Ultimately, Achilles fails, because the clever tortoise leads him into an infinite regression. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson better known by the pseudonym Lewis Carroll (1832 – 1898), was an English author, mathematician, logician, Anglican deacon and photographer.
