Book The Mysterious Island Trilogy

Download or read book The Mysterious Island Trilogy written by Jules Verne and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2014-02-27 with total page 1224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: “The Mysterious Island Trilogy” contains two translations in one volume and is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. The Mysterious Island was originally published as L'Ile mystéreuse in parts in France between 1873 and 1875 in a periodical. It was the last part of a trilogy. The Mysterious Island made the links between the two novels Captain Grant's Children (1865), and Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Seas (1869). This idea had been born even before the start of writing of The Mysterious Island. The first English translation was available by Sampson Low in 1875, translated by W.H.G. Kingston. He was a famous author of boys' adventure and sailing stories. However, it is now known that the actual translator of Mysterious Island and his other Verne novels was actually his wife, Agnes Kinloch Kingston. Based on this first English version followed many other variants of translations or abridged versions. In 1876 the Stephen W. White translation appeared first in the columns of The Evening Telegraph of Philadelphia and subsequently as an Evening Telegraph Reprint Book. This translation is more faithful to the original story and restores the death scene of Captain Nemo, but there is still condensation and omission of some sections such as Verne's description of how a sawmill works. Jules Gabriel Verne (1828 – 1905) was a French novelist, poet, and playwright best known for his adventure novels and his profound influence on the literary genre of science fiction.

Download or read book The Mysterious Island written by Jules Verne and published by BoD - Books on Demand. This book was released on 2023-06-11 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mysterious Island tells the tale of five Americans who, in an attempt to escape the Civil War, pilot a hot-air balloon and find themselves crashed on a deserted island somewhere in the Pacific. Verne had been greatly influenced by works like Robinson Crusoe and The Swiss Family Robinson, and that influence shines brightly in this novel of engineering ingenuity and adventure. Verne imparts the escapees with such over-the-top cleverness and so many luckily-placed resources that modern readers might find the extent to which they tame the island comical. Despite that, the island contains genuine mysteries for the adventurers to solve. The standard translation of The Mysterious Island was produced in 1875, and is credited to W. H. G. Kingston. Despite its popularity, it’s widely criticized for abridging and Bowlderizing important parts of the text. The translation presented here, produced by Stephen W. White in 1876, is considered a much more accurate translation, despite it also abridging some portions.

Book excerpt: This is an almost never republished translation of the classic Verne story. It appeared serialized in a Philadelphia newspaper in 1876 and seems to be one of the only American translations of the manuscript, The others have been either British or French.A group of escapees from a Civil War prison take off in a hot air balloon but soon find themselves in the middle of a great storm. The balloon is thrashed about and they barely make it to a strangely-shaped island. There, along with an assortment of strange creatures and dangers they find Captain Nemo and his Nautilus. Neither one actually perished in the action at the end of 20,000 Leagues Under The Seas! This is a wonderful story and it is with little doubt that he must have envisioned the day when it might be presented in visual form to the world. Verne did, after all, foresee the advent of man's ability to transmit voice as well as pictures--and no doubt video--through the air.

Download or read book The Odyssey written by Homer and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Stephen Mitchell, the renowned translator whose Iliad was named one of The New Yorker’s Favorite Books of 2011, comes a vivid new translation of the Odyssey, complete with textual notes and an illuminating introductory essay. The hardcover publication of the Odyssey received glowing reviews: The New York Times praised “Mitchell’s fresh, elegant diction and the care he lavishes on meter, [which] brought me closer to the transfigurative experience Keats describes on reading Chapman’s Homer”; Booklist, in a starred review, said that “Mitchell retells the first, still greatest adventure story in Western literature with clarity, sweep, and force”; and John Banville, author of The Sea, called this translation “a masterpiece.” The Odyssey is the original hero’s journey, an epic voyage into the unknown, and has inspired other creative work for millennia. With its consummately modern hero, full of guile and wit, always prepared to reinvent himself in order to realize his heart’s desire—to return to his home and family after ten years of war—the Odyssey now speaks to us again across 2,600 years. In words of great poetic power, this translation brings Odysseus and his adventures to life as never before. Stephen Mitchell’s language keeps the diction close to spoken English, yet its rhythms recreate the oceanic surge of the ancient Greek. Full of imagination and light, beauty and humor, this Odyssey carries you along in a fast stream of action and imagery. Just as Mitchell “re-energised the Iliad for a new generation” (The Sunday Telegraph), his Odyssey is the noblest, clearest, and most captivating rendition of one of the defining masterpieces of Western literature.
