Book Lhasa and its Mysteries

Download or read book Lhasa and its Mysteries written by L. Austine Waddell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1906, this volume emerged three years after the British expedition across the Alps to Lhasa, in which the author took part, and provided a first-hand British account of the mission. The expedition (also known as the British Invasion of Tibet) was intended to counter perceived Russian Imperial interests in access to India through Tibet. Its leaders did not anticipate the intention of Tibetans to resist the mission. The expedition allowed L. Austine Waddell, who had the opportunity to learn of Tibet during a previous posting at Darjeeling, to provide a first-hand account of Central Tibet, its capital at Lhasa, its Grand Lama religious hierarchy and its culture through following the narrative of the controversial British expedition. Despite the region’s historic relations with Asia, Europeans had previously had more difficulty accessing the country and its culture. This volume was the third edition in two years, having been made more accessible to accommodate for its favourable reception by the British public.

Book excerpt: As it turned out, young Daniel never outgrew the enchantment of the mysterious Yeti, the Abominable Snowman. His search for the enigmatic creature of Himalayan legends spread over many decades: from 1956 until 2015, Daniel C. Taylor visited almost all valley systems in his quest to explain the ‘Yeti’s footprints’. But to his surprise, solving the footprint mystery did not answer the Yeti question. As his quest evolved, Taylor went on to create two massive national parks around Mount Everest. Equipped with abundant knowledge of the Himalaya, Taylor tells a story that is captivating and full of surprises. He looks back at his exploration of the 2,000-mile-wide Himalaya and talks about bioresilience as a parallel dynamic to biodiversity, thus widening the scope of our understanding of ecology. Yeti: The Ecology of a Mystery is the extraordinary story of one man’s conservation impact and what it means for people to be part of the wild in today’s increasingly tamed world.

Download or read book Among the Himalayas written by Laurence A. Waddell and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2007-09-01 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The soaring peaks of the greatest mountain range on Earth have long drawn visitors from around the globe, and one of the most famous of the 19th century was British adventurer and scholar Laurence Waddell, who spent most of a decade and a half exploring the nations that cling to the sides of the mighty mountains, learning the ways of their peoples, and sharing his experiences with Western readers. Here, in this 1899 classic of Himalayan travel, Waddell introduces us to the challenges of traveling in the region, takes us on visits to Nepalese and Tibetan tea gardens, journeys to monasteries, palaces, and temples, and much more. Beautiful photos and drawings complement Waddell's exciting and gripping tales-he offers some of the first "evidence" for the mysterious creatures known as "yeti," for instance-and make this an essential work for anyone drawn to the dangerous beauty of the Himalayas. British archaeologist and Orientalist LAURENCE AUSTINE WADDELL (1854-1938) also wrote The Buddhism of Tibet or Lamaism (1894) and Lhasa and Its Mysteries (1905).
