Book The Suffering of Light

Download or read book The Suffering of Light written by Alex Webb and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Review The images - rich in color and visual rhythm - span 30 years and several continents. Of course, Haiti and the Mexican border are well represented, locales that opened up a new way to see. He has been able to render Haiti - a place often depicted for its chaos - with a precise eye, finding personal moments that are as still as they are complex. He can use shadows as skillfully as a be-bop musician to set the tempo. The people in his frames can look like dwarfs being stomped on by giant, disembodied feet. He can make an American street seem far more foreboding than any Third World slum. (David Gonzalez The New York Times 2011-12-18) A 30-year retrospective of a great, and often overlooked, American pioneer of colour photography who pays scant regard to genre boundaries, merging art photography, photojournalism and often complex street photographs. (Sean O'Hagan The Guardian 2011-12-13) In far-flung corners of the globe, Webb captures glimpses of beauty in impoverished lives and stoicism in the face of strife. (Jack Crager American Photo 2011-12-01).

Book excerpt: This fascinating artists book by New Yorkbased Dutch artist Anouk Kruithof transforms selections from collector Brad Feuerhelms vernacular photo collection into five dramatic, mysterious and erotic visual narratives that Kruithof calls image-stories. To accomplish this the artist isolated herself in a bungalow for an extended period of time with digitized versions of the photographs and played with their organization and layering on the computer screen. The resulting alterations and collages saved as screen-shots comprise her experiments with making sense of this voluminous archive. Interspersed between the stories are excerpts from the email correspondence between artist and collector. Kruithofs work has most recently been shown at the Stedelijk, Amersterdam, and is the recipient of the 2014 Charlotte Kohler Prize and ICP Infinity Award, New York. Feuerhelm is a London-based American collector and dealer in vernacular photography. Brief essays on the project by Kruithof and Feuerhelm bookend the image-stories.

Book Good Pictures

  • Author : Kim Beil
  • Publisher : Stanford University Press

  • ISBN : 1503612325
  • Pages : 333 pages

Download or read book Good Pictures written by Kim Beil and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2020-06-23 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A picture-rich field guide to American photography, from daguerreotype to digital. We are all photographers now, with camera phones in hand and social media accounts at the ready. And we know which pictures we like. But what makes a "good picture"? And how could anyone think those old styles were actually good? Soft-focus yearbook photos from the '80s are now hopelessly—and happily—outdated, as are the low-angle portraits fashionable in the 1940s or the blank stares of the 1840s. From portraits to products, landscapes to food pics, Good Pictures proves that the history of photography is a history of changing styles. In a series of short, engaging essays, Kim Beil uncovers the origins of fifty photographic trends and investigates their original appeal, their decline, and sometimes their reuse by later generations of photographers. Drawing on a wealth of visual material, from vintage how-to manuals to magazine articles for working photographers, this full-color book illustrates the evolution of trends with hundreds of pictures made by amateurs, artists, and commercial photographers alike. Whether for selfies or sepia tones, the rules for good pictures are always shifting, reflecting new ways of thinking about ourselves and our place in the visual world.

Book excerpt: Mark Mahaney's Polar Night is a passage through a rapidly changing landscape in Alaska's northernmost town of Utqiagvik. It's an exploration of prolonged darkness, told through the strange beauty of a snowscape cast in a two month shadow. The unnatural lights that flare in the sun's absence and the shapes that emerge from the landscape are unexpectedly beautiful in their softness and harshness. It's hard to see past the heavy gaze of climate change in an arctic town, though Polar Night is a visual poem about endurance, isolation and survival.
