Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After her father’s death, young Anne Beddingfeld moves to London with her meagre inheritance, hopeful and ready to meet adventure. She witnesses a fatal accident at a Tube station and picks up a cryptic note dropped by the anonymous doctor who appeared on the scene. When Anne learns of a murder at the estate that the dead man was on his way to visit, it confirms her suspicion that the man in the brown suit who lost the note was not a real doctor. With her clue in hand she gains a commission from the newspaper leading the search for the “man in the brown suit,” and her investigation leads her to take passage on a South Africa–bound ocean liner. On board, she meets a famous socialite, a fake missionary, a possible secret service agent, and the M.P. at whose estate the second murder occurred. She learns about a secretive criminal mastermind known only as the Colonel and of stolen diamonds connected to it all. During the voyage, she evades an attempt on her life, and in South Africa she escapes from a kidnapping and barely survives another attack on her at Victoria Falls. She falls in love, finds the diamonds, and discovers the truth about the two deaths in London that started it all. Finally, she confronts the mysterious criminal mastermind, the Colonel. Published in 1924 by the Bodley Head, The Man in the Brown Suit is Agatha Christie’s fourth novel. Unlike the classic murder mysteries that made her famous, The Man in the Brown Suit, like her second novel The Secret Adversary, is an international crime thriller. Book The Borden Murders

Download or read book The Borden Murders written by Sarah Miller and published by Schwartz & Wade. This book was released on 2016-01-12 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With murder, court battles, and sensational newspaper headlines, the story of Lizzie Borden is compulsively readable and perfect for the Common Core. Lizzie Borden took an axe, gave her mother forty whacks. When she saw what she had done, she gave her father forty-one. In a compelling, linear narrative, Miller takes readers along as she investigates a brutal crime: the August 4, 1892, murders of wealthy and prominent Andrew and Abby Borden. The accused? Mild-mannered and highly respected Lizzie Borden, daughter of Andrew and stepdaughter of Abby. Most of what is known about Lizzie’s arrest and subsequent trial (and acquittal) comes from sensationalized newspaper reports; as Miller sorts fact from fiction, and as a legal battle gets under way, a gripping portrait of a woman and a town emerges. With inserts featuring period photos and newspaper clippings—and, yes, images from the murder scene—readers will devour this nonfiction book that reads like fiction. This book was released on 2018-01-17 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a collection of early short stories and an essay which gave the book its name. The latter is fairly short and its main idea is an argument for the virtues of a noir mystery as opposed to a traditional British one. Considering the fact that this comes from a guy who became a classic of the former even before his death and that he picked up some below the average examples of the latter, I agree. The stories themselves left me out cold for the most part. I can actually describe the plot in practically all of them at once. A trouble starts involving a damsel in distress. A tough guy emerges (usually a PI or a good cop) who gets involved, gets knocked out, and shot at. It turns out the damsel in distress is a minor culprit which makes her a femme fatale. Everybody and their brother meet at the main villain place, a big shootout is insured. Everybody dies except for the tough guy with a heard of gold and the femme fatale who emerge unscratched; the latter escapes. The end

The Complete, Annotated Murder on the Links contains hundreds of explanatory footnotes — 20,000 words in all! — by Christie expert Bill Peschel. They describe in detail aspects of British and French culture unfamiliar to readers. They define cultural and historical events, define unfamiliar French and English words, and now-forgotten celebrities. Learn why red lipstick was seen as a sexual signal, who Christie dedicated the book too and why, and links in the story to other Christie works. When you’re done with the novel, dig into these essays — 12,000 words in all by Bill Peschel — that expand the world of Links and Agatha Christie: * The Woman Behind Murder on the Links Meet Marguerite Steinheil, the wealthy adventuress whose affair with the president of France ended in his death, and her involvement in a double murder (of her husband and mother) that put her on trial for her life! * England vs. France Why the two nations get like a longtime married couple who barely understand each other, but stay together anyway. * The British Invasion Links is set amid the English expatriates on the Boulogne coast. Why did they come to France, and what was the Christie connection? * The French Police The way French police investigate crimes is far different from their English counterparts. What is the difference between the Sûreté, the gendarmerie, and the municipal police? Read this and find out. * Agatha Christie in 1921 What was she doing and why was this her most happy time? * Education Of an Author Agatha Christie learned a lot about the publishing business during this time. Why did she drop her first publisher and move to Collins? * The History of Hastings Mystery’s second most celebrated sidekick gets an essay about him, describing why he was useful and why Christie dropped him. * Murder on the Golf Course Although Links didn’t have much to do with the game, there were plenty of mysteries taking place on the golf course. This overview describes the most notable ones of the 1920s and ’30s. * Editing Agatha There were numerous changes made in the book between its first publication and its final edition, including whole paragraphs omitted. This essay describes what was changed. Plus two maps created for the book, a list of French phrases, translated, and a list of characters.
