Download or read book Cabanocey written by Lillian C. Bourgeois and published by Pelican Publishing. This book was released on 1999-04-30 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Louisiana has sixty-four parishes, and many of them are as individual and different as the state itself is different from others in the Union. St. James Parish, a small parish of 249 square miles, is not only one of the oldest settlements in the state, but it is different in its population make-up and is important historically. Cabanocey . . . is a splendid history of the Parish of St. James. . . . Lillian C. Bourgeois captured the spirit that animates the population, which is descended from French, Spanish, Acadian, German, and Creole peoples. Bourgeois writes of the population's customs, beliefs, language differences, and folklore. Cabanocey is not a collection of dry facts and dates; rather, it vividly describes how, more than one hundred years ago, the people of St. James Parish lived, who they were, and what they contributed to their parish and their state. Before the Civil War, St. James Parish was the educational center of Louisiana, and Jefferson College was the first important college in the state. Founded in 1830, it had fine buildings, a well-equipped laboratory, and an impressive library. The Convent of the Sacred Heart (1835) for girls was well-known by prominent families in Louisiana, Mexico, and Central America, who sent their daughters there. Cabanocey contains St. James genealogies and thousands of names of early settlers, including the soldiers, taxpayers, officials, prominent families, and the first settlers and their children. From the early censuses and church and court records, descent is traced for many names. The censuses of 1766, 1769, and 1777 are complete and were obtained from the archives in Seville, Spain.

Download or read book Cherie Quarters written by Ruth Laney and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2022-10-19 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cherie Quarters combines personal interviews, biography, and social history to tell the story of a plantation quarter and its most famous resident, renowned Louisiana writer and Pulitzer Prize nominee Ernest J. Gaines. In clear and vivid prose, this original and vital book illuminates the birthplace of a preeminent Black author and the lives of the people who inspired his work. Before he became an award-winning writer, Gaines was the son of sharecroppers in Cherie Quarters, a small Black community in Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiana. Drawing on decades of interviews and archival research, Ruth Laney explores the lives and histories of the families, both kin and not, who lived in a place where “everybody was everybody’s child.” Built as slave cabins for the nearby River Lake Plantation in the 1840s, the houses of Cherie Quarters were cold in winter, hot in summer, filled with mosquitoes, and overflowing with people. Even so, the residents made these houses into homes. Laney describes aspects of their daily lives—work, food, entertainment, religion, and education—then expands her focus to the white families who built River Lake Plantation, enslaved its people, and later directed the lives of its Black sharecroppers. The twenty-first century saw the demise of Cherie Quarters. Like many landmarks of Black American life and history, the few remaining structures were razed or fell into ruin. Laney recounts the ultimately unsuccessful efforts of a small, dedicated group to preserve the vestiges of the community—two slave cabins, the church/schoolhouse, and a shed. Engaging and rich in detail, Cherie Quarters highlights the voices of those who called this special place home and shares the story of a lost way of life in South Louisiana.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first-ever detailed, comprehensive history of intelligence, from Moses and Sun Tzu to the present day The history of espionage is far older than any of today's intelligence agencies, yet the long history of intelligence operations has been largely forgotten. The codebreakers at Bletchley Park, the most successful World War II intelligence agency, were completely unaware that their predecessors in earlier moments of national crisis had broken the codes of Napoleon during the Napoleonic wars and those of Spain before the Spanish Armada. Those who do not understand past mistakes are likely to repeat them. Intelligence is a prime example. At the outbreak of World War I, the grasp of intelligence shown by U.S. President Woodrow Wilson and British Prime Minister Herbert Asquith was not in the same class as that of George Washington during the Revolutionary War and leading eighteenth-century British statesmen. In this book, the first global history of espionage ever written, distinguished historian Christopher Andrew recovers much of the lost intelligence history of the past three millennia--and shows us its relevance.
Download or read book Black Boy from the Barrio written by Cornelius Wright and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2021-07-22 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black Boy from the Barrio is a series of books about Cornelius “Neo” Wright. It’s an ongoing saga about an African American man who is living two different lives. The first half of his life was spent doing nonproductive things like partying, watching television, and working on physically demanding jobs. During his mid-thirties, he had a wakeup call and realized that he needed a “check up from the neck up.” He found that he was on the same career and life path that his beloved father (who was a farm laborer) had warned him to avoid. In 1994, he was introduced to some local business owners who were living the life that most people would only dream of. Fortunately, they were willing to coach and mentor Neo if he would make the time. He took them up on their offer, and the rest is history. At the time, little did Neo know that he would someday rewrite history for himself and countless others someday in the future. Well, that someday is now. Welcome to Black Boy from the Barrio Volume 1.

Book excerpt: FBI Agent Johnny Harrison is back, tracking a coldblooded killer through the Louisiana bayou in a thriller that will “keep your nose glued to the page” (The Literary Review). Maxwell Carter, a criminal justice fingerprint analyst in West Virginia, has a lucrative racket going. When he finds a positive match for an old crime, he conveniently ignores it in return for a modest retainer from the alleged perp. But his latest mark isn’t keen on being blackmailed. When FBI Agent Johnny Harrison finds Carter’s body, bound and sliced in cheese wire, it isn’t hard to connect the murder to Carter’s unwilling patsy—a suspected child-killer living in the Louisiana bayou and working in Mississippi. Going undercover on an old trawler, Harrison wades into the sordid fantasy-world of a twisted mind. But what he discovers is even more dangerous: a century-old secret from New Orleans’s troubled history . . . one that has yet to claim its last victim. The Procession marks the return of FBI Agent Johnny Harrison, who teamed up with Scotland Yard’s Jack Swann in The Covenant, Nom de Guerre, and Storm Crow, which Jack Higgins praised as “absolutely marvelous.”

Download or read book The Art Criticism of Francis Ponge written by Shirley Ann Jordan and published by MHRA. This book was released on 1994 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of Francis Ponge's essays on contemporary artists (L'Atelier contemporain) attempts to broaden the popular view of the author as a poet of objects. It explores Ponge's perception of art criticism as an inherently problematic genre and exposes the inhibitions surrounding the production of the essays. The study demonstrates how Ponge's essays on artists parallel developments in his other works. They are seen as instrumental in his movement towards open texts and a stress on the creative process itself, as well as opportunities to reaffirm his philosophical and aesthetic stance.
