Book excerpt: This mixed-method survey study was undertaken to determine the extent to which high school assistant principals in Michigan reported experiencing physical or psychological difficulties as a result of occupational stress. Using Lazarus and Folkman's (1984) transactional model as a theoretical lens, this study examined the intersection of people and their work environments through an analysis of their self-reported reflections on their capacity to deal with various work-based stressors. I collected data through an anonymous online survey with 46 questions organized into three sections: (1) Demographic information, (2) Stress in the workplace, and (3) General feedback from an open-ended response. I sent email invitations to high school assistant principals in public and private schools around the state, including deans of students or other administrators in charge of student discipline and supervision as well as teacher evaluation. A series of descriptive statistics, t-tests and linear regressions were run to determine levels of agreement to various statements about occupational stress, and to determine significant relationships 1) by gender, 2) by number of assistant principals, 3) by total school enrollment, and 4) by school setting. Additionally, qualitative analysis of the single open-ended question was conducted in order to allow participants the opportunity to elaborate on their quantitative responses, or provide new information when considering stress in their lives. My primary research question inquired about the impact occupational stress had on physical and/or mental conditions for assistant principals. Results showed minimal impact, primarily related to fatigue and weight gain, as well as difficulty with mentally leaving work responsibilites at the office. My secondary research questions pertained to whether any changes occurred for individuals after assuming an assistant principal position. These changes included challenges related to work-life balance, experiences with burnout, or behavioral changes such as decreased exercise or increased absenteeism or impatience. Results showed the adoption of a poor diet and decreased exercise as most prevalent for new assistant principals, as well as minimal relationships with burnout and maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Qualtitative responses communicated concerns about increased workload (especially teacher evaluations), decreased funding, and difficulties maintaining work-life balance because of work-related responsibilities. Recommended coping mechanisms included daily exercise, following a healthy diet, taking mini-vacations to get away from work during the school year, and maintaining a positive attitude. This study provides insight about the potential impact of occupational stress for assistant principals, and gives direction to future research on the most influential conditions for them in schools.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book makes a much needed contribution to what we know about the role and work of the assistant principal. It offers terri c insights into the different challenges one faces after being appointed assistant principal, and it provides readers with a rich array of data regarding the mental, emotional, social, and physical adjustments accompanying one’s transition to this new role. The author refreshingly moves beyond mere description of what assistant prin- pals do as they make their transition to that role, and actually helps us gain a sense of the lived experience of becoming and being an assistant principal. The book gives a realistic picture of the cognitive, social, and emotional con icts and confusions, the daily ups and downs, the fears, frustrations, and highs that are experienced by the men and women undertaking the passage from teaching to administration. This book is distinctive for a number of reasons. It is an empirical study of the role of the assistant principal. There are comparatively few helpful studies, and P- fessor Armstrong’s research adds a solid and much needed addition to that body of work. It focuses on the transition from being a teacher to being an assistant prin- pal, and it reveals much about how the assistant principal’s role transition differs markedly from that of the school principal.

Book Factors that Affect Job Satisfaction of Assistant High School Principals

Download or read book Factors that Affect Job Satisfaction of Assistant High School Principals written by Stacey A. Sidle and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the job satisfaction levels of assistant high school principals serving within the geographical region of one intermediate unit in south central Pennsylvania as measured by the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire. The study used four instruments to collect data: a demographic questionnaire, the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (MSQ), open-ended research questions, and interview questions. The three questions that guided the study were: a) What factors do high school assistant principals perceive lead to job satisfaction? b) What factors, present or absent, do high school assistant principals perceive lead to job dissatisfaction? c) What role does the school district play in enhancing factors that lead to job satisfaction as perceived by high school assistant principals? Twenty four assistant high school principals serving in public schools located within three counties in one intermediate unit in south central Pennsylvania were surveyed using an on-line Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (MSQ Long Form). Demographic data pertaining to age, gender, experience, school size and location, hours spent at work, and salary were collected through the use of the demographic questionnaire. Additional data were obtained through the open-ended research questions and individual interviews. The majority (83%) of the high school assistant principals participating in this study expressed satisfaction with their jobs. As a group, the assistant principals in this study were "very satisfied" or "satisfied" with all of the 20 dimensions as measured by the MSQ. The mean general satisfaction rating of participants was 3.68 out of a possible high of 5.0. The greatest area of satisfaction was Moral Values and the greatest area of dissatisfaction was Company Policies/Procedures. Specifically, the assistant high school principals in this study reported that being able to carry out their assigned duties without violating their personal beliefs was the most important factor contributing to job satisfaction. Respondents also reported satisfaction with working directly with students and seeing them succeed, helping teachers to improve instruction, and being directly involved with running and supervising the building. The study found that in regards to variables contributing to job dissatisfaction, respondents reported dissatisfaction over dealing with difficult parents, with the lack of appreciation received, and with the amount of time the position required. Conflicts with staff, disciplinary issues, and the ever increasing demands of the job were also factors leading to dissatisfaction. The research revealed that assistant high school principals feel that there are some things school districts can do to make the job more satisfying, including increasing professional development opportunities, maintaining a student focus, reducing the number of expectations, and increasing the level of compensation.

Book Adjusting to Loss of Local Control

Download or read book Adjusting to Loss of Local Control written by and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2012 Michigan legislators passed Public Act 436, the local financial stability and choice act, to address the issues facing its low achieving highly indebted schools. The act specifically identified guidelines for managing school districts with signifcant financial deficits and persistently low academic achievement. At the time of the study, five schools were impacted by this act and under the terms of PA 436 were subject to one of the following three options; 1) an emergency manager appointed by the Governer, 2) a consent agreement with the Department of Treasury, or 3) closing the district down completely. While much research has been conducted on the impact of such high-stakes school reform laws as PA 436 on students and teachers, very little research is available regarding the impact on public school principals. The purpose of this study was to examine the lived experiences of building principals working under loss of local control due to the enactment of Michigan's Public Act 436. I specifically sought to gain an understanding of the impact of loss of local control on building principals' management style, motivation, and work-life balance. Through a series of semi-structured interviews, I gathered data from six public school principals in grades K-12. I conducted two interviews with each principal, the first related to impact on their professional lives, and the second related to impact on their personal lives. Analysis for emergent themes revealed that while at the same time the workload for these principals was increasing, the funding and resources to get the work done was decreasing. Although at times the increased work and demands from the loss of local control forced these principals to go against their own personal management beliefs, the way they managed and motivated their staff remained relatively unchanged. The largest impact noted in this study was on the personal lives of principals. The increased work hours and lack of clarity in the work caused high levels of emotional and physical strain. The principals indicated less time for their families and profoundly less time for self-care.

Book Disproportional Impacts of Prior Focal Job Experience on Female Candidates for Secondary Assistant Principal Positions

Download or read book Disproportional Impacts of Prior Focal Job Experience on Female Candidates for Secondary Assistant Principal Positions written by Sasha Nicole Neumann and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As of 2014, a new set of learning and teaching standards, the Common Core, seeks to transform K-12 education across the nation. Implementation of these standards through faculty dialogue and professional learning communities requires a complex set of leadership and communication skills (Reed, 2013). Where school site principals have been charged to lead this change in curriculum and teaching methodologies, the hiring and retention of qualified school site administrators (principals and assistant principals) becomes ever more essential to student success. Hiring effective administrators has been shown to have a positive effect on various aspects of student achievement; whereas, hiring ineffective leaders adversely impacts student progress (Leithwood, Seashore Louis, Anderson, & Wahlstrom, 2004; Seashore Louis, Leithwood, Wahlstrom, & Anderson, 2010; Soehner & Ryan, 2011). Numerous studies suggest, at a time when public schools in the United States need new, dynamic, and highly effective leadership, identifying those leaders will become increasingly difficult (Hervey, 2012; Torres, 2013). Because filling those positions will be critical to ensure a quality education for our youth, understanding how prior focal job experience may have a disproportionate impact on male versus female candidates being hired as administrators is crucial. The findings of this study suggest prima facie evidence that male principals responsible for hiring assistant principals continue to be more likely to offer an interview to male candidates when equally qualified female candidates have also applied for the position.
