But to every question you would give the same answer: I do not know. Yet the com mon things are the most interesting, after all, and are best worth studying. One of the common things which serve you every day is the English language. You have used this language ever since you began to talk. You have spoken it everywhere - at home, at school, at play. You are constantly using it. It is your servant. Do you know what it does for you? How much do you know about it? Tell me this: Do all children speak the same language? No. You say in English, I'go to school. The German boy says, Ich gehe in die Schule. The French boy says, Je vais a l'ecole. You speak in the English language, the German boy in the German language, the French boy in the French language. Every language has names of its own for all common things. You often Speak of your house Were you French, you would say ma maison if you were German, you would say mein Haus instead. Book Beyond the Mother Tongue

Download or read book Beyond the Mother Tongue written by Yasemin Yildiz and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monolingualism-the idea that having just one language is the norm is only a recent invention, dating to late-eighteenth-century Europe. Yet it has become a dominant, if overlooked, structuring principle of modernity. According to this monolingual paradigm, individuals are imagined to be able to think and feel properly only in one language, while multiple languages are seen as a threat to the cohesion of individuals and communities, institutions and disciplines. As a result of this view, writing in anything but one's "mother tongue" has come to be seen as an aberration.

Book Jewish Economies Volume 1

Download or read book Jewish Economies Volume 1 written by Simon Kuznets and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 2011-12-31 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nobel Laureate Simon Kuznets, famous as the founder of modern empirical economics, pioneered the quantitative study of the economic history of the Jews. Yet until now his most important work on the subject was unpublished. These volumes bring to the public, for the first time, the most important work written on Jewish economic history since that of Werner Sombart a century ago. In the first volume, Kuznets uses extensive, original data to trace trends in the economic life of American Jews. He measures quantitatively for the first time the legendary economic success of American Jews and discusses the foundations of these achievements. Tracing their distinctive concentration in the professions, he exposes the causes of the extreme inequalities in American Jewish economic life. The immigrant origin of nearly all American Jews offers a unique case study in the process of assimilation that made American Jewry the ultimate American success story. This offers an ideal prelude to the second forthcoming volume, Comparative Perspectives on Jewish Migration. The volume’s editors also provide a unique perspective on Kuznets’ work. In the introduction, Weyl shows that many of Kuznets’ most influential ideas, were inspired by his study of the economic history of the Jews. Through careful analysis of shared themes, and dozens of hours of detailed interviews, Lo and Weyl reveal a new dimension of Kuznets’ thought to historical inquiry.

Book Mother Tongues and Nations

Download or read book Mother Tongues and Nations written by Thomas Paul Bonfiglio and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2010-06-29 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph examines the ideological legacy of the the apparently innocent kinship metaphors of “mother tongue” and “native speaker” by historicizing their linguistic development. It shows how the early nation states constructed the ideology of ethnolinguistic nationalism, a composite of national language, identity, geography, and race. This ideology invented myths of congenital communities that configured the national language in a symbiotic matrix between body and physical environment and as the ethnic and corporeal ownership of national identity and local organic nature. These ethno-nationalist gestures informed the philology of the early modern era and generated arboreal and genealogical models of language, culminating most divisively in the race conscious discourse of the Indo-European hypothesis of the 19th century. The philosophical theories of organicism also contributed to these ideologies. The fundamentally nationalist conflation of race and language was and is the catalyst for subsequent permutations of ethnolinguistic discrimination, which continue today. Scholarship should scrutinize the tendency to overextend biological metaphors in the study of language, as these can encourage, however surreptitiously, genetic and racial impressions of language.
