Excerpt: ... said, --" I have now a sensation that convinces me my departure is near. The heart-strings seem gently, but entirely loosened." When asked if she had any pain, she replied, "No; but a new feeling." Just before she closed her eyes, she pressed the hand of her niece with tenderest affection, and said, --" I have the assurance which I have long prayed for. Shout!" The next moment all was still. Her happy soul passed to its rest on the twelfth of July, 1791, in the eighty-fifth year of her age. She was the last survivor of the Epworth family. She died four months and nine days after her brother John; and her remains are interred in the same tomb. They "were lovely and pleasant in their lives, and in their death they were not divided." It cannot be expected that we should attempt anything more than the briefest notice of Charles, Mrs Wesley's youngest son, and the Hymnist of the Methodist Churches. Born prematurely on the eighteenth of December, 1708, the utmost care was required to preserve him alive. After passing through the same home-training as his brothers, he went to Westminster, where he was lively and somewhat daring, but not inattentive to his studies. At the age of eighteen, he was elected a scholar of Christ Church, Oxford. For some time he was careless about his spiritual interests; but at length an important change came. Writing to his brother John, he says, --" It is owing, in a great measure, to somebody's prayers, --my Mother's most likely, --that I am come to think as I do: for I cannot tell myself how or when I woke out of my lethargy, only that it was not long after you went away." The change soon manifested itself in a weekly attendance at the Lord's Supper; a more strict course of conduct; and the commencement of zealous...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mother of the Wesleys: A Biography More than a hundred and twenty years have passed away since Susanna Wesley entered into rest. Her name has been every-where received with respect, and by a large and influential Christian community it has been cherished with strongest affection. Her success in the education of her children has been the theme of universal admiration; and no one has yet ventured to hazard even a conjecture as to how much the cause of religion and the wellbeing of the human race are indebted, under the Divine blessing, to her steady piety and extraordinary talents. The numerous biographies of her sons, all the histories of Methodism, and a number of periodicals, have contained brief, and in some instances very able, sketches of her character. But up to this hour no volume worthy to be called a memorial of her has issued from the press. The following pages are an attempt to supply, in some small degree, this remarkable deficiency. Book excerpt: This is an annotated biography of the difficult life of Susanna Wesley, mother of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, and Charles Wesley, the great and prolific hymn writer. It chronicles her girlhood and marriage to Rev. Samuel Wesley; their financial woes, his being sent to debtor's prison, and their political differences, which at one time led to a separation. Insight into her methods of child-rearing are examined, along with the woes of bearing children constantly. Of special interest may be the unhappy marriages of her daughters, illustrating that the clergy have problems too, but how they handle these trials makes or breaks the individual.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Susanna Wesley, long celebrated in Methodist mythology as mother of the movement's founders, now takes place as a practical theologian in her own right. This collection of her letters, spiritual diary, and longer treatises (only one of which was published in her lifetime) shows her to be more than the nurturing mother of Wesleyan legend. It also reveals her to be a well-educated woman in conversation with contemporary theological, philosophical, and literary works. Her quotations and allusions include Locke, Pascal, and Herbert, as well as a number of now forgotten theologians. In some of her work, one can distinguish doctrinal and spiritual leanings, such as Arminianism and Christian perfection, that would later find wide expression in the spread of Methodism. Further, her writings demonstrate her readiness, for conscience's sake, to stand up to the men in her life--father, husband, and sons---and the three incarnations of English Protestantism they represented: respectively, Puritanism, the Established Church, and the new Methodist movement. Tracing these incidents in her letters and diaries, a reader can begin to understand how spirituality, even an otherwise conservative one in rather restrictive times, can serve to empower the voice of women.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Susanna Wesley Tnls life of Susanna Wesley, the mother of John Wesley the founder, and of Charles Wesley the poet, of Methodism, differs from previous ones in not being written from a sectarian nor even from an eminently religious point of view. Having been much asso ciated with those who had been in familiar inter course with Charles Wesley's widow and children, and having heard Susanna Wesley continually spoken of as a woman who underwent and overcame more difficulties than most, the ideal of her life early aroused my imagination. I was delighted with the opportunity of writing her memoir, and have done so with the sympathetic admiration natural to one in whose veins runs some of her blood, however much diluted.
