Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mother of Christ: Or the Blessed Virgin Mary in Catholic Tradition, Theology, and Devotion I welcome the work which Father vassall-phillips has written at the invitation of his religious superiors. His already long career as a member of one of the best known and most zealous of the many religious Institutes which give themselves to the preaching of missions has fitted him to Write of the teaching of the Catholic Church with a power and directness that only a long experience can give. He is at home in all the points of controversy that have to be met in this country, which has to so large an extent forgotten the need of doctrinal unity in religious matters. His work as a military chaplain during the recent war, by leading him to Eastern fields of action, has extended his knowledge and grasp of the Oriental traditions of Christianity. He comes, therefore, to his task exceptionally prepared, and with an equip ment specially adapted to the work that he has chosen. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Saints and Doctors of the Church have expressed their inability to write worthily of the great Mother of God. It will, therefore, be readily understood that when the Provincial of the English Province of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer suggested to me that I might publish an English book on our Lady, my first feeling was one of shrinking from the task. "Whoso would celebrate the Holy Virgin and Mother of God," wrote Basil of Seleucia, "will find abundant materials for praise. But I, knowing mine own weakness to be unequal to the mightiness of the reality, have for a long time refrained from very awe. For I have not my lips purified with coal from heaven, like Isaias who saw the Seraphim, nor have I, like the divine Moses, the feet of my soul bared of their covering." Many another great servant of God has expressed himself after a similar fashion before writing about our Lady. How dare I, then, attempt that for which Saints have professed themselves unworthy? But other thoughts rushed to my aid. I might not lightly shrink from that which came to me thus, by way of obedience. A wish from such a source should be enough. Whatever might be the subject on which one might be asked to write by one's Superiors in Religion-to wait for a direct command would be unseemly. And when the subject was the Blessed Virgin, the temptation would have been great, however strong my consciousness of my unworthiness, even had the opportunity come to me in any other manner. For it is a happiness to acknowledge that, by a special mercy of God, notwithstanding all my sins and shortcomings, I have from boyhood up always loved and trusted His Blessed Mother.

Book Mary and the Fathers of the Church

Download or read book Mary and the Fathers of the Church written by Luigi Gambero and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2019-10-23 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Father Luigi Gambero, internationally-known expert on early Christianity, presents a comprehensive survey of the development of Marian doctrine and devotion during the first eight centuries. Focusing on the lives and works of over thirty of the most famous Church Fathers and early Christian writers, Fr. Gambero has produced a clear and readable summary of the richness of the patristic age's theological and devotional approach to the Mother of God. The book contains numerous citations from the works of those men who developed the defining Christological and Mariological positions that have constituted the foundational doctrinal teaching of the Church. Each chapter concludes with an extended reading from the works of the patristic authors. A number of these texts have never before been published in English. The thought of the Fathers and early Christian writers continues to fascinate readers today. Their theological acuity and spiritual depth led them faithfully into the mysteries of Sacred Scripture. Their vast experience made them reliable and trustworthy witnesses to the faith of the people of God.

Book Mary in the Plan of God and in the Communion of the Saints

Download or read book Mary in the Plan of God and in the Communion of the Saints written by Alain Blancy and published by Paulist Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Mary the mother of Jesus Christ, has always been a stumbling block to understanding among divided Christians. Many Protestants have believed that the Marian devotions practiced by Catholics detract from the centrality of Jesus himself. To Catholics, the dilution of Mary's role in the history of salvation by Protestants has come across as harsh and even unscriptural." "The Dombes Group in south cental France, comprised of Roman Catholic and Reformed scholars, has taken a fresh look at the place of Mary in Christian faith and concluded that she has been more the victim than the cause of discord. The participants found themselves "at one" in their acceptance of the virginal conception and motherhood of Mary. At the same time, the group reminded their coreligionists of areas where both sides still need to be "converted" to authentic Christianity. While warning against the excesses of goddess-theology, they nevertheless concluded that Mary exemplifies "the decisive and perfect example of the Yes which Christian faith must utter.""--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Mary in Different Traditions

Download or read book Mary in Different Traditions written by Thomas G Casey and published by Messenger Publications. This book was released on 2021-04-01 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Catholicism in the Western world today demands real effort to turn to Our Lady in any meaningful way. The author explores the insights of other faiths – Protestantism, Orthodoxy, Islam and Judaism; and also the insights of the 'other' within the Catholic tradition – the Eastern-rite Catholics who, despite their full communion with Rome, have a distinct approach to Mary based on thir unique liturgical and spiritual tradition. Perhaps the novelty of their viewpoints on Mary can bring us to the joy of surprise about her once again, and help us to enjoy the even greater wonder of her son, Jesus.
