Book excerpt: This book offers a critical response to the debate between science and religion over the origin of the universe. The author argues that the mosaic cosmogony, as described in the Bible, is not incompatible with modern scientific theories, and provides a detailed analysis of the essay by Goodwin and the response by Powell. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Use the tools of reason, the power of the mind to think, understand, and form judgments by logic, to construct an argument for the Christian faith. Paul reasoned from the Scriptures; he proved, explained, and persuaded. Samuel L. Phillips maintains that we can establish many of the essential truths of Christianity from facts most people believe. In DEFENDING THE CHRISTIAN FAITH, he creates common ground with unbelievers, showing that they already believe in fundamental truths that lead to Christianity.

Download or read book Anatomy of a Controversy written by Josef L. Altholz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Controversy, especially religious controversy, was the great spectator sport of Victorian England. This work is a study of the biggest and best of Victorian religious controversies. Essays and Reviews (1860) was a composite volume of seven authors (six of them Anglican clergymen) which brought England its first serious exposure to biblical criticism. It evoked a controversy lasting four years, including articles in newspapers, magazines and reviews, clerical and episcopal censures, a torrent of tracts, pamphlets and sermons, followed by weightier tomes (and reviews of all these), prosecution for heresy in the ecclesiastical courts, appeal to the highest secular court, condemnation by the Convocation of the clergy and a debate in Parliament. Essays and Reviews was the culmination and final act of the Broad Church movement. Outwardly the conflict ended inconclusively; at a deeper level, it marked the exhaustion both of the Broad Church and of Anglican orthodoxy and the commencement of an era of religious doubt. This controversy illustrates the pathology of Victorian religion in its demonstration of the propensity to controvert and the methods of controversialists. It is both the greatest Victorian crisis of faith and the best case study of Victorian religious controversy.

Download or read book The Creationist Debate Second Edition written by Arthur McCalla and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2013-08-29 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whereas scholarly study of Creationism usually places it in the context of religion and the history or philosophy of science, The Creationist Debate, here revised and completely updated in its second edition, has been written in the conviction that creationism is ultimately about the status of the Bible in the modern world. Creationism as a modern ideology exists in order to defend the authority of the Bible as a repository of transhistorical truth from the challenges of any and all historical sciences. It belongs to and is inseparable from Protestant Fundamentalists' desire to resubject the modern world to the authority of the inerrant Bible. Intelligent Design creationism, to the extent that it distinguishes itself from reactionary biblicism, is a program advocating a supernaturalist, providentialist understanding of the world. Accordingly, The Creationist Debate situates Creationism and Intelligent Design in relation to the rise, from the early modern period onwards, of historical thinking in various scientific and scholarly disciplines (including theories of the earth, chronology, civil history, geology, biblical criticism, paleontology, evolutionary biology, and anthropology) in their complex relationship to the status of the Bible as an historical authority. It argues that the debate over Creationism is at bottom a debate over how to interpret the biblical text rather than over how to interpret the world.
