Book Place making and Urban Development

Download or read book Place making and Urban Development written by Pier Carlo Palermo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-12-05 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The regeneration of critical urban areas through the redesign of public space with the intense involvement of local communities seems to be the central focus of place-making according to some widespread practices in academic and professional circles. Recently, new expertise maintains that place-making could be an innovative and potentially autonomous field, competing with more traditional disciplines like urban planning, urban design, architecture and others. This book affirms that the question of 'making better places for people' should be understood in a broader sense, as a symptom of the non-contingent limitations of the urban and spatial disciplines. It maintains that research should not be oriented only towards new technical or merely formal solutions but rather towards the profound rethinking of disciplinary paradigms. In the fields of urban planning, urban design and policy-making, the challenge of place-making provides scholars and practitioners a great opportunity for a much-needed critical review. Only the substantial reappraisal of long-standing (technical, cultural, institutional and social) premises and perspectives can truly improve place-making practices. The pressing need for place-making implies trespassing undue disciplinary boundaries and experimenting a place-based approach that can innovate and integrate planning regulations, strategic spatial visioning and urban development projects. Moreover, the place-making challenge compels urban experts and policy-makers to critically reflect upon the physical and social contexts of their interventions. In this sense, facing place-making today is a way to renew the civic and social role of urban planning and urban design.

Book Resurrection at Lanta Bur

Download or read book Resurrection at Lanta Bur written by Allen Richardson and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2011-06 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The shattering sound of the machine gun seemed to tear into Mohamed's heart. Tears watered his eyes, and he covered his mouth as if to control his urge to vomit. He bowed his head and walked away. He vowed that he would never again play a part in such a ridiculous charade. Mohamed Jama Adam was able to overcome the desolate poverty of his childhood, but will he be able to overcome the oppression of corrupt government leaders? As a lawyer specializing in corporate law, Mohamed became suspicious when he was assigned to an ambiguous government case. He became even more suspicious when he discovered that he had no time to prepare, no time to gather witnesses, and no time to consult with his clients-six former government officials charged with treason against a brutal dictator. With a great desire to improve conditions in the leadership of his country, Mohamed began publishing an anonymous newsletter, fittingly titled Nuovo Orizzonte, or New Horizon. Just as each new day dawns beyond the eastern horizon, Mohamed dreamed of a new beginning for his homeland. For this dream, he was rewarded by being incarcerated in the top secret, maximum security prison in Lanta Bur. By an absolute miracle, after several years of incarceration, Mohamed manages to escape. It is then that he is confronted with a deteriorated homeland and must decide whether or not he has the courage to fight for his country, his love. Based on actual events, Resurrection at Lanta Bur is a powerful story of love and faith, of hate and betrayal.

That significance, this volume shows, is inextricable from the intricacy of its literary form and the audacity of its historical vision. This landmark collection brings together a diverse range of scholars in American literary studies and related fields to definitively establish The Book of Mormon as an indispensable object of Americanist inquiry not least because it is, among other things, a form of Americanist inquiry in its own right--a creative, critical reading of "America." Book Second Witness

    Book Details:
  • Author : Brant Gardner
  • Publisher : Greg Kofford Books Incorporated
  • Release : 2007
  • ISBN : 1589580419
  • Pages : 469 pages

Download or read book Second Witness written by Brant Gardner and published by Greg Kofford Books Incorporated. This book was released on 2007 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This volume, the first of six, devotes serious attention to the foundational questions: (1) What is a useful approach to Book of Mormon geography? (2) What contributions can archaeology, anthropology, and ethnohistory make to Book of Mormon questions? (3) What constituted Nephite theology in these first generations? (4) What were Mormon's sources and how did he organize his work? One of the most exciting insights of this volume is its reconstruction of the politics behind the Deuteronomic reforms of King Josiah. These reforms deemphasized an earlier Messiah-centered theology that more fully acknowledged the council of the gods, the war in heaven, Yahweh's feminine consort, originally worshipped in the temple, and Isaiah, the poet-prophet who foretold the Messiah's coming. Did Lehi's acceptance of this earlier, Christ-centered religion explain the death threats against him in Jerusalem? If Laman and Lemuel accepted those reforms, did this intrafamily disagreement produce a thousand years of hostility between Nephites and Lamanites in the New World? Other contributions of this volume are a fresh look at what the Book of Mormon actually says about skin color, the pressures of local polytheistic culture on Nephite theology, and the Isaiah-based egalitarian ideal of Nephite culture."--Bk. jkt.

Book Second Witness Analytical and Contextual Commentary on the Book of Mormon

Download or read book Second Witness Analytical and Contextual Commentary on the Book of Mormon written by Brant A. Gardner and published by Greg Kofford Books. This book was released on 2007-09-01 with total page 848 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stop looking for the Book of Mormon in Mesoamerica and start looking for Mesoamerica in the Book of Mormon! Second Witness, a new six-volume series from Greg Kofford Books, takes a detailed, verse-by-verse look at the Book of Mormon. It marshals the best of modern scholarship and new insights into a consistent picture of the Book of Mormon as a historical document. Taking a faithful but scholarly approach to the text and reading it through the insights of linguistics, anthropology, and ethnohistory, the commentary approaches the text from a variety of perspectives: how it was created, how it relates to history and culture, and what religious insights it provides. The commentary accepts the best modern scholarship, which focuses on a particular region of Mesoamerica as the most plausible location for the Book of Mormon’s setting. For the first time, that location—its peoples, cultures, and historical trends—are used as the backdrop for reading the text. The historical background is not presented as proof, but rather as an explanatory context. The commentary does not forget Mormon’s purpose in writing. It discusses the doctrinal and theological aspects of the text and highlights the way in which Mormon created it to meet his goal of “convincing . . . the Jew and Gentile that Jesus is the Christ, the Eternal God.”
