This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ethical Value of the Plays of Manuel Tamayo Y Baus It is often of interest to know why a subject is selected. The works of Manuel Tamayo y Bans appeal to one as clean and wholesome. I have been more than ever impressed with this as I have read, re read, and studied them. There is no need, as after perusing the works of some authors, of a moral and spiritual bath after reading any of Tamayo's plays. Instead one experiences a feeling of purification, a spiritual uplift. He is an author worthy of attention, Since. As we shall find later)it is Tamayo's aim to teach morality through his plays, it will at least be interesting to consider how he has succeeded. It would undoubtedly afford pleasure to Tamayo himself were he now here, that one of another nationality should make this study of his works; and perhaps as he rates the gentler sex so high. Blessed as he was with a noble mother and wife, it would not lessen his pleasure that the author of this study should be a woman. Book A New History of Spanish Literature

Download or read book A New History of Spanish Literature written by Richard E. Chandler and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 1991-09-01 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1961, A New History of Spanish Literature has been a much-used resource for generations of students. The book has now been completely revised and updated to include extensive discussion of Spanish literature of the past thirty years. Richard E. Chandler and Kessel Schwartz, both longtime students of the literature, write authoritatively about every Spanish literary work of consequence. From the earliest extant writings though the literature of the 1980s, they draw on the latest scholarship. Unlike most literary histories, this one treats each genre fully in its own section, thus making it easy for the reader to follow the development of poetry, the drama, the novel, other prose fiction, and nonfiction prose. Students of the first edition have found this method particularly useful. However, this approach does not preclude study of the literature by period. A full index easily enables the reader to find all references to any individual author or book. Another noteworthy feature of the book, and one omitted from many books of this kind, is the comprehensive attention the authors accord nonfiction prose, including, for example, essays, philosophy, literary criticism, politics, and historiography. Encyclopedic in scope yet concise and eminently readable, the revised edition of A New History of Spanish Literature bids fair to be the standard reference well into the next century.

Book Shakespeare and Cultural Appropriation

Download or read book Shakespeare and Cultural Appropriation written by Vanessa I. Corredera and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-03-24 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shakespeare and Cultural Appropriation pushes back against two intertwined binaries: the idea that appropriation can only be either theft or gift, and the idea that cultural appropriation should be narrowly defined as an appropriative contest between a hegemonic and marginalized power. In doing so, the contributions to the collection provide tools for thinking about appropriation and cultural appropriation as spectrums constantly evolving and renegotiating between the poles of exploitation and appreciation. This collection argues that the concept of cultural appropriation is one of the most undertheorized yet evocative frameworks for Shakespeare appropriation studies to address the relationships between power, users, and uses of Shakespeare. By robustly theorizing cultural appropriation, this collection offers a foundation for interrogating not just the line between exploitation and appreciation, but also how distinct values, biases, and inequities determine where that line lies. Ultimately, this collection broadly employs cultural appropriation to rethink how Shakespeare studies can redirect attention back to power structures, cultural ownership and identity, and Shakespeare’s imbrication within those networks of power and influence. Throughout the contributions in this collection, which explore twentieth and twenty-first century global appropriations of Shakespeare across modes and genres, the collection uncovers how a deeper exploration of cultural appropriation can reorient the inquiries of Shakespeare adaptation and appropriation studies. This collection will be of great interest to students and scholars in theatre and performance studies, Shakespeare studies, and adaption studies.

Book The Adulteress on the Spanish Stage

Download or read book The Adulteress on the Spanish Stage written by Tracie Amend and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-04-21 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As early as 1760 and as late as 1920, Romantic drama dominated Peninsular Spanish theater. This love affair with Romanticism influenced the formation of Spain's modern national identity, which depended heavily on defining women's place in 19th century society. Women who defied traditional gender roles became a source of anxiety in society and on stage. The adulteress embodied the fear of rebellious women, the growing pains of modernity and the political instability of war and invasion. This book examines the conflicted portrayal of women and the Spanish national identity. Studying the adulteress on stage, the author provides insight into the uneasy tension between progress and tradition in 19th century Spain.
