So to town I went; and it was but a short time until they all followed me. I went to work for a groceryman, driving delivery wagon, at twelve dollars per month. I worked for him about three months, then got a position as messenger boy for the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway, at fifteen dollars per month, and in a short time was promoted to car checker, with a salary of forty-five dollars. I remained at this position for some time, and quit only because my mother wished me to learn some trade. I went to work then in a barber shop, receiving four dollars per month for six months, then eight dollars per month for three months, and finally, 31x dollars per week for three months; having to sign a contract for one year before I could go to work at all. Ifollowed this business for most six years, but finally drifted back - to railroading, as I liked that better than anything I ever did, and am yet at it. The Ten Commandments might more appropriately be called the Ten Prohibitions; while the Sermon on the Mount is the real commandment. In the Old Testament there was restraint and warning put upon the moral man; in the New, liberty and impulse. In the former man Was a slave, under bonds against vice; in the latter he is free, under incentives to virtue.
