South was chairman. T. J. Arthur, secretary. And Fred C. Flenniken. Treasurer. Did most of fective work in planning for what thev called a pan-hellenic reunion at the inau guration. They commenced upon their campaign early in the year, and working with publicity committees in all the larger towns of the state, they did much to arouse the old students to an interest in the great and important reunion events at their Alma Mater. From 6 to 8 p. M. On Friday each chapter had its dinner party and its reunion. At 8 the parade was formed under the command of Jos. K. Buchanan. Chief marshal. And marched through the principal streets of the town and to the President's House. The fraternities fell in line. In the order determined by the date of their establishment in the University. The parade was unique and spectacular and numbered not less than 500 men. On their arrival at the President's House a call was made for President. Hodges who responded in a short address asking for the cooperation of the old graduates in build ing up the University. After being re ceived by the President the procession moved to the Court Amusement. Parlors es corting the President on the way. Here a general reunion was held until after mid I night. Book excerpt: As Ecology teachers ourselves we have become increasingly aware of the lack of a single comprehensive textbook of Ecvlogy which we can recommend unreservedly to our students. While general, review texts are readily available in other fields, recent publications in Ecology have tended for the most part to be small, specialised works on single aspects of the subject. Such general texts as are available are often rather too detailed and, in addition, tend to be somewhat biased towards one aspect of the discipline or another and are thus not truly balanced syntheses of current knowledge. Ecology is, in addition, a rapidly developing subject: new information is being gathered all the time on a variety of key questions; new approaches and techniques open up whole new areas of research and establish new principles. Already things have changed radically since the early '70s and we feel there is a need for an up to date student text that will include some of this newer material. We have tried, therefore, to create a text that will review all the major principles and tenets within the whole field of Ecology, presenting the generally accepted theories and fundamentals and reviewing carefully the evidence on which such principles have been founded. While recent developments in ecological thought are emphasised, we hope that these will not dominate the material to the extent where the older-established principles are ignored or overlooked.

But we are now so numerous and our technology is so p- erful that we are having major effects on the planet, its environment, and the b- sphere. For some years prophets have warned of the possible detrimental consequences of our activities, such as pollution, deforestation, and overfishing, and recently it has become clear that we are even changing the atmosphere (e. g. ozone, carbon dioxide). This is worrying since the planet’s life systems are involved and dependent on its functioning. Current climate change – global w arming – is one recognised consequence of this larger problem. To face this major challenge, we will need the research and advice of many disciplines – Physics, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Biology, and Sociology – and particularly the commitment of wise politicians such as US Senator Al Gore. An important aspect of this global problem that has been researched for several decades is the loss of species and the impoverishment of our ecosystems, and hence their ability to sustain themselves, and more particularly us! Through evolutionary time new species have been generated and some have gone extinct. Such extinction and regeneration are moulded by changes in the earth’s crust, atmosphere, and resultant climate. Some extinctions have been massive, particularly those asso- ated with catastrophic meteoric impacts like the end of the Cretaceous Period 65Mya.
