Book The Very Great Monster in the White House

Download or read book The Very Great Monster in the White House written by Gini Scott and published by . This book was released on 2017-08-20 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE VERY GREAT MONSTER IN THE WHITE HOUSE was inspired by watching the continuing battle against Donald Trump by the media, many Republicans, Democrats, academics, minority groups, journalists, celebrities, and many others. He has a disapproval rating of about two-thirds of the country. Yet he had continued to struggle from one conflict and scandal to the next, as he appeals to the angry and disaffected, though he was once considered just a reality show entertainer and businessman. This growing battle during the election and in first the eight months of his presidency led me to think of the way these myths about monsters in many cultures can help explain what is going on. As such, I have compared Trump to 15 of these monsters, including the dragon St. George fights, the Chimera, Medusa, the Cyclops, the Kraken, Charybis, the Hyrdra, the Minotaur, the Sphinx, and even the Devil, in his many guises, including Beelzebub, Lucifer, and Satan. These myths reflect the battle against Trump and his message of racism, xenophobia, and hate: - Trump and Monster Myth Mash - Is Trump a Chimera? - Beheading the Trump Campaign - Could Trump Be the U.S. Cyclops? - Beware the Trump Water Monster - Trump and the Monsters of the Sea - Trump and the Many Headed Monsters - Trump and the Human Beasts - Is Trump the Modern-Day Devil?

Book The Triumph Tragedy of Lyndon Johnson

Download or read book The Triumph Tragedy of Lyndon Johnson written by Joseph A. Califano and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-02-03 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of “Five Best Books about Wartime Presidents”—Michael Bechloss, The Wall Street Journal From Lyndon Johnson’s closest domestic adviser during the White House years comes a book in which “Johnson leaps out of the pages in all his raw and earthy glory” (The New York Times Book Review) that’s been called “a joy to read” (Stephen Ambrose, The Washington Post Book World). And now, a new introductory essay brings the reader up to date on Johnson’s impact on America today. Califano takes us into the Oval Office as the decisions that irrevocably changed the United States were being crafted to create Johnson’s ambitious Great Society. He shows us LBJ’s commitment to economic and social revolution, and his willingness to do whatever it took to achieve his goals. Califano uncorks LBJ’s legislative genius and reveals the political guile it took to pass the laws in civil rights, poverty, immigration reform, health, education, environmental protection, consumer protection, the arts, and communications. President Lyndon Johnson was bigger than life—and no one who worked for him or was subjected to the “Johnson treatment” ever forgot it. As Johnson’s “Deputy President of Domestic Affairs” (The New York Times), Joseph A. Califano’s unique relationship with the president greatly enriches our understanding of our thirty-sixth president, whose historical significance continues to be felt throughout every corner of America to this day. A no-holds-barred account of Johnson’s presidency, The Triumph & Tragedy of Lyndon Johnson is an intimate portrait of a President whose towering ambition for his country and himself reshaped America—and ultimately led to his decision to withdraw from the political arena in which he fought so hard.

Book American Lion

Download or read book American Lion written by Jon Meacham and published by Random House. This book was released on 2008-11-11 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive biography of a larger-than-life president who defied norms, divided a nation, and changed Washington forever Andrew Jackson, his intimate circle of friends, and his tumultuous times are at the heart of this remarkable book about the man who rose from nothing to create the modern presidency. Beloved and hated, venerated and reviled, Andrew Jackson was an orphan who fought his way to the pinnacle of power, bending the nation to his will in the cause of democracy. Jackson’s election in 1828 ushered in a new and lasting era in which the people, not distant elites, were the guiding force in American politics. Democracy made its stand in the Jackson years, and he gave voice to the hopes and the fears of a restless, changing nation facing challenging times at home and threats abroad. To tell the saga of Jackson’s presidency, acclaimed author Jon Meacham goes inside the Jackson White House. Drawing on newly discovered family letters and papers, he details the human drama–the family, the women, and the inner circle of advisers– that shaped Jackson’s private world through years of storm and victory. One of our most significant yet dimly recalled presidents, Jackson was a battle-hardened warrior, the founder of the Democratic Party, and the architect of the presidency as we know it. His story is one of violence, sex, courage, and tragedy. With his powerful persona, his evident bravery, and his mystical connection to the people, Jackson moved the White House from the periphery of government to the center of national action, articulating a vision of change that challenged entrenched interests to heed the popular will– or face his formidable wrath. The greatest of the presidents who have followed Jackson in the White House–from Lincoln to Theodore Roosevelt to FDR to Truman–have found inspiration in his example, and virtue in his vision. Jackson was the most contradictory of men. The architect of the removal of Indians from their native lands, he was warmly sentimental and risked everything to give more power to ordinary citizens. He was, in short, a lot like his country: alternately kind and vicious, brilliant and blind; and a man who fought a lifelong war to keep the republic safe–no matter what it took.
