Book MONKEY PENIS THE PRICE OF A BORDER SOUVENIR

Download or read book MONKEY PENIS THE PRICE OF A BORDER SOUVENIR written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract The mythic nature of the art world creates a story that is believed by a group of people. Regular people want to see art that relates to their life, dreams, beliefs and experiences. Familiar things are considered important, reminding them of their life and reality, holding value as materially significant objects. The object is always assigned a value and becomes part of a narrative. I hope that my own work not only comments on the current state of the art world but also transcends the commodification and souvenir-status by which comparable works are conceived. An end to the narrative never really exists as the idea of consumerism extends the souvenir from the shelf to the state of memorabilia.

Book The Behavioral Ecology of the Tibetan Macaque

Download or read book The Behavioral Ecology of the Tibetan Macaque written by Jin-Hua Li and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-18 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book summarizes the multi-disciplinary results of one of China’s main primatological research projects on the endemic Tibetan macaque (Macaca thibetana), which had continued for over 30 years, but which had never been reported on systematically. Dedicated to this exceptional Old World monkey, this book makes the work of Chinese primatologists on the social behavior, cooperation, culture, cognition, group dynamics, and emerging technologies in primate research accessible to the international scientific community. One of the most impressive Asian monkeys, and the largest member of its genus, the Tibetan macaque deserves to be better known. This volume goes a long way towards bringing this species into the spotlight with many excellent behavioral analyses from the field. - Frans de Waal, Professor of Psychology, Emory University, USA. Macaques matter. To understand primate patterns and trends, and to gain important insight into humanity, we need to augment and expand our engagement with the most successful and widespread primate genus aside from Homo. This volume focuses on the Tibetan macaque, a fascinating species with much to tell us about social behavior, physiology, complexity and the macaque knack for interfacing with humans. This book is doubly important for primatology in that beyond containing core information on this macaque species, it also reflects an effective integrated collaboration between Chinese scholars and a range of international colleagues—exactly the type of collaborative engagement primatology needs. This volume is a critical contribution to a global primatology. - Agustín Fuentes, Professor of Anthropology, University of Notre Dame, USA. I have many fond memories of my association with Mt. Huangshan research beginning in 1983, when together with Professor Qishan Wang we established this site. It is such a beautiful place and I miss it. It is gratifying to see how far research has progressed since we began work there, becoming more internationalized and very much a collaborative endeavor under the long-term direction of Professor Jin-Hua Li and colleagues. This book highlights the increased interest in this species, representing a variety of disciplines ranging from macro aspects of behavior, cognition and sociality, to micro aspects of microbes, parasites and disease, authored by a group of renowned Chinese and international primatologists. I applaud their efforts and expect more interesting work to come from this site in the years ahead. - Kazuo Wada, Professor Emeritus, Kyoto University, Japan.

Book The Case of the Female Orgasm

Download or read book The Case of the Female Orgasm written by Elisabeth A. Lloyd and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-07 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why women evolved to have orgasms--when most of their primate relatives don't--is a persistent mystery among evolutionary biologists. In pursuing this mystery, Elisabeth Lloyd arrives at another: How could anything as inadequate as the evolutionary explanations of the female orgasm have passed muster as science? A judicious and revealing look at all twenty evolutionary accounts of the trait of human female orgasm, Lloyd's book is at the same time a case study of how certain biases steer science astray. Over the past fifteen years, the effect of sexist or male-centered approaches to science has been hotly debated. Drawing especially on data from nonhuman primates and human sexology over eighty years, Lloyd shows what damage such bias does in the study of female orgasm. She also exposes a second pernicious form of bias that permeates the literature on female orgasms: a bias toward adaptationism. Here Lloyd's critique comes alive, demonstrating how most of the evolutionary accounts either are in conflict with, or lack, certain types of evidence necessary to make their cases--how they simply assume that female orgasm must exist because it helped females in the past reproduce. As she weighs the evidence, Lloyd takes on nearly everyone who has written on the subject: evolutionists, animal behaviorists, and feminists alike. Her clearly and cogently written book is at once a convincing case study of bias in science and a sweeping summary and analysis of what is known about the evolution of the intriguing trait of female orgasm.

Download or read book A Mind of Its Own written by David M. Friedman and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2008-09-04 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether enemy or ally, demon or god, the source of satisfaction or the root of all earthly troubles, the penis has forced humanity to wrestle with its enduring mysteries. Here, in an enlightening and entertaining cultural study, is a book that gives context to the central role of the penis in Western civilization. A man can hold his manhood in his hand, but who is really gripping whom? Is the penis the best in man -- or the beast? How is man supposed to use it? And when does that use become abuse? Of all the bodily organs, only the penis forces man to confront such contradictions: something insistent yet reluctant, a tool that creates but also destroys, a part of the body that often seems apart from the body. This is the conundrum that makes the penis both hero and villain in a drama that shapes every man -- and mankind along with it. In A Mind of Its Own, David M. Friedman shows that the penis is more than a body part. It is an idea, a conceptual but flesh-and-blood measuring stick of man's place in the world. That men have a penis is a scientific fact; how they think about it, feel about it, and use it is not. It is possible to identify the key moments in Western history when a new idea of the penis addressed the larger mystery of man's relationship with it and changed forever the way that organ was conceived of and put to use. A Mind of Its Own brilliantly distills this complex and largely unexamined story. Deified by the pagan cultures of the ancient world and demonized by the early Roman church, the organ was later secularized by pioneering anatomists such as Leonardo da Vinci. After being measured "scientifically" in an effort to subjugate some races while elevating others, the organ was psychoanalyzed by Sigmund Freud. As a result, the penis assumed a paradigmatic role in psychology -- whether the patient was equipped with the organ or envied those who were. Now, after being politicized by feminism and exploited in countless ways by pop culture, the penis has been medicalized. As no one has before him, Friedman shows how the arrival of erection industry products such as Viagra is more than a health or business story. It is the latest -- and perhaps final -- chapter in one of the longest sagas in human history: the story of man's relationship with his penis. A Mind of Its Own charts the vicissitudes of that relationship through its often amusing, occasionally alarming, and never boring course. With intellectual rigor and a healthy dose of wry humor, David M. Friedman serves up one of the most thought-provoking, significant, and readable cultural works in years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Primate Sexuality is a uniquely comprehensive synthesis of our knowledge about the sexual behaviour of primates. In it, Alan Dixson reviews and integrates both the evolutionary biology and the physiological basis of sexual behaviour across the whole spectrum of primates, from prosimians tohumans. Covering almost every aspect of primate sexuality, the book begins with an analysis of the history of research into primate sexual behaviour. Several chapters discuss the complex array of mating systems exhibited by primates, and the bewildering range of tactics which influence sexualinteractions withing mating systems, and, ultimately, reproductive success. Sex selection, sperm competition, and the evolution of sexual dimorphism are explored. The book also reviews our current knowledge of the physiological aspects of sexuality, such as the sexual differentiation of the brain, hormonal mechanisms, the ovarian cycle, and the neuroendocrinal regulation of sexual behaviour. No other book written on the subject of primate sexuality exhibits such comparative breadth or technical depth. Dixson has been working on primates for almost 30 years, and has put together anoutstanding volume, drawing on and collating work spread across more than 2000 references. The work is illustrated throughout with hundreds of original drawings and figures. It will be welcomed by zoologists, anthropologists, and psychologists researching the sexual behaviour of primates, as well asby psychiatrists and clinicians with an interest in human sexuality.
