Book The Upper Ocean Response to the Monsoon in the Arabian Sea

Download or read book The Upper Ocean Response to the Monsoon in the Arabian Sea written by Albert Sok Fischer and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Estimation of the upper ocean heat budget from one year of observations at a moored array in the north central Arabian Sea shows a rough balance between the horizontal advection and time change in heat, associated with the propagation of mesoscale eddies. During the southwest monsoon a coastal filament exports recently upwelled water from the Omani coast to the site of the array, 600 km offshore. Altimetry shows mildly elevated levels of surface eddy kinetic energy along the Arabian coast during the SW monsoon, suggesting that such offshore transport may be an important component of the Arabian Sea heat budget. The sea surface temperature (SST) and mixed layer depth are observed to respond to high frequency (HF) variability in the surface heat flux and wind stress. The rectified effect of this HF forcing is investigated in a three-dimensional reduced gravity thermodynamic model of the Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean.

Book Challenges and Opportunities in Agrometeorology

Download or read book Challenges and Opportunities in Agrometeorology written by S.D. Attri and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-10-06 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global food security and sustainable agriculture are the key challenges before the scientific community in the present era of enhanced climate variability, rapidly rising population and dwindling resources. No part of the world is immune from meteorological extremes of one sort or another posing threat to the food security. Agrometeorology has to make most efficient use of the opportunities available in achieving the objectives of enhancing productivity and maintenance of sustainability. Increased awareness and technological advancement have provided opportunities to develop efficient agrometeorological services that can help cope with risks. These include improvements in weather forecasting, better understanding of the monsoon variability and crop-weather relationships, advances in operational agrometeorology and agrometeorological information systems, adaptation strategies to climate change and improved risk evaluation and management. This book based on an International Workshop held in New Delhi, India should be of interest to all organizations and agencies interested in agrometeorological applications.

Book Understanding and Forecasting of Monsoons

Download or read book Understanding and Forecasting of Monsoons written by P. N. Vinayachandran and published by Daya Books. This book was released on 2008 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Publication Presents A Collection Of 16 Selected Research/ Review Papers On Various Aspects Of Monsoons Those Were Discussed During The International Roundtable On Understanding And Prediction Of Summer And Winter Monsoons Held At Jakarta/ Bandung, Indonesia During 21-24 November, 2005. Monsoons Modulate The Rhythm Of Life In Several Countries. The Amount Of Rain Received During Monsoons Critically Controls The Way Of Life, Culture And Economy. The Word Monsoon Indicates A Rainy Season But The Domain Of Monsoon Encompasses Seasonal Changes In Prevailing Surface Wind Direction Especially Between Summer And Winter. The Ability To Anticipate How Monsoon And The Resultant Climate, Will Behave From One Year To The Next Will Lead To Better Management Of Agriculture, Water Supplies, Fisheries And Other Resources. Prediction Of Monsoon However Is One Of The Major Challenges Of Climate Research As It Is An Extremely Complex Phenomenon Involving Variabilities Over A Wide Range Of Spatial And Temporal Scales. The Topics Covered In This Volume Include Observed Aspects Of Monsoons In Several Countries, Analyses Of Model Simulations And Forecasts, Survey Of Instrumentation And Analysis Techniques And Projections Of Monsoon In The Future Climate. Hence, The Publication Is Undoubtedly, A Useful Reference Material For The Meteorologists And Experts Working In The Area Of Monsoon Prediction And Will Help The Developing Countries In Working Out Appropriate Plans And Programmes On Understanding And Prediction Of Monsoons. Book excerpt: Out of the five equatorial vortices studied in this investigation, the following significant features are obtained. 1. Disturbances in the trades associated with lateral shear were found to be important for the genesis of these equatorial vortices. 2. Intensification of these disturbances depended very much on the timing of the occurrence of the cold surge and the presence of the disturbance in the trades. 3. Low-Ievel easterly jets at 850 mb were found over the northem part of Peninsular Malaysia during the intensification stage of the four equatorial vortices that interacted with the cold monsoon surge and brought heavy rain to Peninsular Malaysia. Associated with the jet there was significant vertical shear about 20 knots between the lower and middle troposphere. 4. Heavy rain was confined to the cyc10nic shear side of the easterly jet and around the near-equatorial trough axis. 5. For the equatorial vortex that brought along heavy rain only to Sarawak, the low-Ievel easterly jet was absent over Peninsular Malaysia even though there was intense cold surge. 6. For those vortices that affected Peninsular Malaysia, the vertical wind fields were distincdy different from those associated with the vortex that affected only Sarawak. 7. For the maintenance and intensification of the disturbances, a complex combination of CISK mechanism and mixed barotropic and baroc1inic instability is suspected.

Book Dominating Controls for Wetter South Asian Summer Monsoon in the Twenty First Century

Download or read book Dominating Controls for Wetter South Asian Summer Monsoon in the Twenty First Century written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study analyzes a suite of global climate models from phase 5 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5) archives to understand the mechanisms behind a net increase in the South Asian summer monsoon precipitation in response to enhanced radiative forcing during the twenty-first century. An increase in radiative forcing fuels an increase in the atmospheric moisture content through warmer temperatures, which overwhelms the weakening of monsoon circulation and results in an increase of moisture convergence and therefore summer monsoon precipitation over South Asia. Moisture source analysis suggests that both regional (local recycling, the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal) and remote (including the south Indian Ocean) sources contribute to the moisture supply for precipitation over South Asia during the summer season that is facilitated by the monsoon dynamics. For regional moisture sources, the effect of excessive atmospheric moisture is offset by weaker monsoon circulation and uncertainty in the response of the evapotranspiration over land, so anomalies in their contribution to the total moisture supply are either mixed or muted. In contrast, weakening of the monsoon dynamics has less influence on the moisture supply from remote sources that not only is a dominant moisture contributor in the historical period but is also the net driver of the positive summer monsoon precipitation response in the twenty-first century. Finally, the results also indicate that historic measures of the monsoon dynamics may not be well suited to predict the nonstationary moisture-driven South Asian summer monsoon precipitation response in the twenty-first century.
