Book Modernizing of the Orient Classic Reprint

Download or read book Modernizing of the Orient Classic Reprint written by Clayton Sedgwick Cooper and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modernizing of the Orient The East has at last met the West face to face. What has been the character of that meeting? What have been the results of the mingling of these two opposite and distinct sets of people with their antipodal points of view and methods? Is the East becoming West? What is happening? These have been the writer's questions upon two journeys around the world in which many unusual privileges have been afforded for first-hand contact with a large variety of institutions and native populations. It is hoped that what is here set forth may be the means of inducing clearer ideas and further study concerning those people who embrace more than one-half the population of the globe, and who, for obvious reasons, are now becoming the center of international, commercial and racial interests. • Author : Mary C. Neuburger
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press

Download or read book The Orient Within written by Mary C. Neuburger and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2011-05-15 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bulgaria is a Slavic nation, Orthodox in faith but with a sizable Muslim minority. That minority is divided into various ethnic groups, including the most numerically significant Turks and the so-called Pomaks, Bulgarian-speaking men and women who have converted to Islam. Mary Neuburger explores how Muslim minorities were integral to Bulgaria's struggle to extricate itself from its Ottoman past and develop a national identity, a process complicated by its geographic and historical positioning between evolving and imagined parameters of East and West. The Orient Within examines the Slavic majority's efforts to conceptualize and manage Turkish and Pomak identities and bodies through gendered dress practices, renaming of people and places, and land reclamation projects. Neuburger shows that the relationship between Muslims and the Bulgarian majority has run the gamut from accommodation to forced removal to total assimilation from 1878, when Bulgaria acquired autonomy from the Ottoman Empire, to 1989, when Bulgaria's Communist dictatorship collapsed. Neuburger subjects the concept of Orientalism to an important critique, showing its relevance and complexity in the Bulgarian context, where national identity and modernity were brokered in the shadow of Western Europe, Russia/USSR, and Turkey.

Book The Orient the Liberal Movement and the Eastern Crisis of 1839 41

Download or read book The Orient the Liberal Movement and the Eastern Crisis of 1839 41 written by P. E. Caquet and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-29 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the Eastern Crisis of 1839-41, closely examining the first instance of coordinated Western intervention in the Middle East during the modern era. Readers can explore topics such as how culture, domestic politics, and ideology shaped diplomacy in this landmark crisis, and the importance role played by religion - including, alongside mainstream Christianity, the Protestant Zionist movement. Highly informative and fully researched, this book suggests that the Eastern Crisis - and its associated diplomatic and military efforts - marked the first of many modern-era attempts to “improve” the region by moulding it in a Western image, providing scholars with a new perspective on this period of history.
