Book The Modern City and Its Problems Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Modern City and Its Problems Classic Reprint written by Frederic C. Howe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Modern City and Its Problems IN so far as this volume carries a message it is that the American city lags behind the work it should properly perform. It is negative in its func tions, rather than positive in its services. It has been stripped of power and responsibility. It is politically weak and lacks ideals of its possibilities. It has so little concern for its people that they in turn have little concern for it. We have failed to differentiate between those activities which are pri vate and those which are public. We have failed, too, to provide protection to the individual from in equalities of power and position, and have left him a prey to forces as dangerous to his life and comfort as those against which the police are employed to protect. Further than this, we have failed to shift to society the burdens of industry which the com ing of the city has created. We have permitted the sacrifice of low wages, irregular employment, and disease to be borne by the individual rather than by the community. Those who suffer from these conditions are in reality a vicarious sacrifice; a sacrifice which society has no right to accept. Book The Better City

Download or read book The Better City written by Dana W. Bartlett and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-20 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Better City: A Sociological Study of a Modern City In the following pages a study has been made of a particular city - the one which the writer knows best - in whose welfare his life is bound up. While discussing the problems of this city, he has had a consciousness that he was discussing the problems of city life in general. For while every city has its own peculiar problems, city life in all its essential features is everywhere the same. The average modern city expresses its highest ideals in terms of greatness: Greater New York, Greater Los Angeles. It is the purpose of this book to concentrate thought upon the ethical ideal - believing that a city may become as noted for its righteousness, its morality, its social virtues, its artistic life, as for its ma terial resources. A better city means a better country. May we each have a part in the building of The Better City. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Modern Cities

Download or read book Modern Cities written by Samuel Lane Loomis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-02 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Cities: And Their Religious Problems The city is the Gibraltar of civilization. It is not because our urban population is nearly or quite one fourth of the Whole that it is being made the object of special study. The writer of this hook sees that the city is strategic; and in directing our attention and effort to the strategic point, we are following a divine example. When God looked down upon this earth to select a native land for Christianity, he laid his finger on that country in which the highways of the nations met. The world's altar was erected at that point - the point where the three great civilizations. Which were to exert the profoundest in uence upon the world, the Jewish, the Greek, and the Roman, came. Into the come pletest conjunction. That fact was illustrated by the inscription over the Cross, written in Greek, in Hebrew, and in Latin, that all the motley crowd might read. The place where the Cross of Christ was planted was a strategic point. The Lord Jesus Christ set us this ex ample when he bade his disciples begin at the metropo lis. That word was remembered by the Apostles when they went forth to plant churches in Antioch, in Bphs sus, in Athens, in Corinth, and in Rome. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Modern City Henry Ward Beecher says, that three great ele ments enter into the career of a great citizen, viz., that which his ancestry gives, that which opportunity gives; and that which his will develops. So, if human character is the camera of human development, then civic virtue. Will be just what the genius and Will of the people develop. The proper solution of the many complex problems of modern city life, is the solution of the greatest questions of the century. New York's original site was fixed by its harbor its growth has been dependent upon its harbor. Could New York be conceived as losing its harbor, it would straightway dwindle to a second or third-rate city. While no such danger can ever menace New York, it is no less true that any limitation Of its harbor facilities strikes a serious blow at the welfare Of the City - which is to say, at the welfare Of the citizens. We purpose to show that such a limitation now exists, that it is rapidly becoming menacing and that with it are closely associated some Of our most serious civic problems. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Study City Government: An Outline of the Problems of Municipal Functions, Control and Organization This little book now offered to the public has taken its present form rather sooner than was at first intended. In spite of the recent increased interest in municipal affairs, many people ask, when a student of city government announces himself, "Why! what is there in that to study?" The outline which forms the basis of this volume was prepared in order to show people just what there is in city government that it is worth while to study.
