Book The Model Algebra Arranged for Elementary Schools Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Model Algebra Arranged for Elementary Schools Classic Reprint written by Edward Gideon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Model Algebra Arranged for Elementary Schools IN presenting this work to the teachership for approval the author assumes that pupils who have been studying arith metic for several years have acquired a somewhat thorough knowledge of numbers, terms, principles, processes, and their applications; that they will, therefore, experience little diffi culty in making the transition from arithmetic to algebra; and that they can readily pass from operations and forms of reasoning involving particular numbers to similar operations and processes of reasoning involving general numbers. For these reasons, only such definitions are given as seem to be really needed to make clear the use of terms repeated or introduced. Formal rules are not given because they are of little value unless deduced by the pupil from the solution of illustrative examples and problems. It has not been deemed wise to require pupils to perform Operations with abstract symbols in accordance with arbitrary rules, except so far as such drill is necessary to prepare them for the solution of the equation, which is the main purpose of all instruction in elementary algebra. At every step suit able problems are introduced to show the practical applica tions of operations leading through correct processes of rea soning to accurate and definite results. The numerous examples and problems presented have been selected or made expressly for pupils of higher grammar-school grades. They are sufficiently difficult to stimulate thought, and are so graded as to insure quickness and accuracy in operations. Book Elementary Algebra Classic Reprint

Download or read book Elementary Algebra Classic Reprint written by G. A. Wentworth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Algebra In preparing a new algebra for secondary schools, the author has provided a new set of examples throughout the book. These examples have been selected and graded with great care. There are nearly four thousand of them, surely a sufficient number for practice in fixing in the minds of pupils the principles of elementary algebra. At the request of many teachers a sufficiently full treatise on graphs and several pages of exercises in physics have been introduced. The first chapter contains the necessary definitions and illustra tions of the commutative, associative, and distributive laws of algebra. This chapter should be read carefully at first, and later particular attention should be given to the principal definitions. The second chapter treats of simple equations and is designed to lead the beginner to see the advantages of algebraic methods before he encounters negative numbers. Only positive numbers are involved in the first two chapters, and the recognition of the fact that the true nature of subtraction is counting backward, and that the true nature of multiplication is forming the product from the multipli cand in the same way as the multiplier is formed from unity, leads to an easy explanation in the third chapter of all the elementary processes with negative numbers. All the rules of this chapter are illustrated and enforced by examples that involve simple algebraic expressions only. The more common Operations with compound expressions, including resolution into factors and the treatment of fractions, follow the third chapter. The immediate succession Of topics that require similar work is of the greatest importance to the beginner, and it is expected that the exercises in compound expressions will give sufficient practice in the use of symbols. Book The Franklin Elementary Algebra Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Franklin Elementary Algebra Classic Reprint written by Edwin P. Seaver and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-21 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Franklin Elementary Algebra The method of teaching algebra set forth in this book assumes as a leading principle that algebraic language, like other language. Is best acquired, not through definitions and formal rules, but rather through actual use of the language itself as an instrument of thought. The singular power of algebraic language in analysis and reasoning is under stood only when one has learned to use it in those processes. The earlier a beginner can be taught to use even a little of this language in reasoning, the better; for so may his interest in it be earlier awakened through the conscious exercise of a newr power. Accordingly, the first part of this book is devoted to the solution of easy problems, by the use of simple equations, with one unknown quantity. The few symbols needed are briefly explained in'the first section. The second section is'a carefully arranged collection of problems, interspersed with explanations, as new features in the process of solu tion call for them. Small numbers are used in a por tion of the problems, that the reasoning may with ease be carried on mentally and expressed orally. This oral use of algebraic language is found to be. A very efficient means of instruction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Beginner s Algebra Classic Reprint written by Claribel Gerrish and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-26 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beginner's Algebra This book aims to give a working knowledge of elementary algebra. It supposes in the pupil such knowledge of arithmetic as is usually obtained before entrance to the highest grade in the grammar school. It introduces multiplication immediately after addition, and teaches factoring while teaching multiplication. It insures by this arrangement a saving of time, accu racy in the use of signs, and an early familiarity with the structure of those expressions which form the staple of algebra. It treats the equation as derived from the problem. It leads to the problem by exercises in expression and in forming equalities. It helps the pupil to become familiar with problems of the ordinary types by means of exercises in their construction. Its purpose throughout is to tell the pupil little that he can see, and to help him to see by employing well directed questions. It is a teaching book, useful to any beginner. Book An Introductory Algebra Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Introductory Algebra Classic Reprint written by John Henry Walsh and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introductory Algebra To the pupil who remains at school until the middle of the tenth year, the so-called logical arrangement of the topics of elementary algebra does no particular harm. Since, however, the majority of boys and girls that begin this study drop out before its completion, it is important to secure for them the most profitable use of the time they can devote to it. Algebra owes its place in the curriculum mainly for two reasons; the chief one being its practical value in the solu tion of numerical problems in many departments of human activity, and the other being the necessity of an acquaint ance with algebra before taking up the study of the higher mathematics. All of algebra that can be used in after life by the pupil that terminates his mathematical studies with this branch is contained in the equation work in its simpler forms. On this account it is the duty of the school authorities to see that this part of the work receives earliest attention, whether algebra is begun in the high school or in the gram mar grades, and that all types of equations should be presented to the pupils' attention before much time is assigned to the drills in the fundamental processes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Algebra: Second Year Course This book contains a brief review of the fundamental opera tions of algebra followed by a thorough presentation of the topics usually included in the work of the third half year. The material is so arranged that the choice of topics for review or advance study may be easily made. The book contains not only a large number of practical problems but also practical applications of graphs. Material for drill in the manipulation of exponents and radicals will be found in Chapter VII. Great pains have been taken to make the subject of logarithms accessible to beginners. The most difficult part in learning to compute with logarithms is the process of interpolation. Of the various arrangements of logarithmic tables which have been suggested, we have selected the one which renders interpolation easiest. The chapter on logarithms is introduced earlier than usual, on account of the great practical importance of the subject. If desired, it can be taken up later, after Chapter VI. The concept of a function does not receive isolated and abstract treatment; it is pre sented as a fundamental idea in proportion, variation, and graphics. Its connection with problems of everyday life is firmly established. The aims of the First Year Book have been kept in view in the preparation of this text. Emphasis is thrown upon clear ness of exposition and the use of expressions which recall the axiomatic processes involved. Continued stress has been laid upon oral exercises. Several of the practical problems given in the text were suggested by the perusal of an English book, T. Percy Nunn's Exercises in Algebra (including Trigonometry), Part I, 1913. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High School Algebra: Elementary Course Each of these aims leads to the same order of topics, which, however, differs somewhat from the conventional order. If it is admitted that there should be a gradually increasing complexity of forms to be manipulated, it follows that factoring and complicated work in fractions have no proper place in the first half year. This book is arranged so that factoring may begin with the second semester and complicated fractions may come still later. Simple fractions are treated in Chapter V. The pupil is introduced to the algebraic notation by recalling and stating in terms of letters certain rules of arithmetic with which he is already familiar. The simplicity of the algebraic formulas, compared with the arithmetical statement of rules known to the pupil, cannot fail to impress him with the use fulness and power of the subject which he is about to study. This impression will be deepened when, in Chapter VI, rules which caused considerable trouble in arithmetic are derived with the utmost ease by algebraic processes. The study of equations and their uses is naturally the main topic of the Elementary Course. This topic is therefore devel oped early, simple simultaneous equations being completed in Part One, which is intended to be covered in the first half year.
