Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Model Algebra Arranged for Elementary Schools IN presenting this work to the teachership for approval the author assumes that pupils who have been studying arith metic for several years have acquired a somewhat thorough knowledge of numbers, terms, principles, processes, and their applications; that they will, therefore, experience little diffi culty in making the transition from arithmetic to algebra; and that they can readily pass from operations and forms of reasoning involving particular numbers to similar operations and processes of reasoning involving general numbers. For these reasons, only such definitions are given as seem to be really needed to make clear the use of terms repeated or introduced. Formal rules are not given because they are of little value unless deduced by the pupil from the solution of illustrative examples and problems. It has not been deemed wise to require pupils to perform Operations with abstract symbols in accordance with arbitrary rules, except so far as such drill is necessary to prepare them for the solution of the equation, which is the main purpose of all instruction in elementary algebra. At every step suit able problems are introduced to show the practical applica tions of operations leading through correct processes of rea soning to accurate and definite results. The numerous examples and problems presented have been selected or made expressly for pupils of higher grammar-school grades. They are sufficiently difficult to stimulate thought, and are so graded as to insure quickness and accuracy in operations. The first chapter contains the necessary definitions and illustra tions of the commutative, associative, and distributive laws of algebra. This chapter should be read carefully at first, and later particular attention should be given to the principal definitions. The second chapter treats of simple equations and is designed to lead the beginner to see the advantages of algebraic methods before he encounters negative numbers. Only positive numbers are involved in the first two chapters, and the recognition of the fact that the true nature of subtraction is counting backward, and that the true nature of multiplication is forming the product from the multipli cand in the same way as the multiplier is formed from unity, leads to an easy explanation in the third chapter of all the elementary processes with negative numbers. All the rules of this chapter are illustrated and enforced by examples that involve simple algebraic expressions only. The more common Operations with compound expressions, including resolution into factors and the treatment of fractions, follow the third chapter. The immediate succession Of topics that require similar work is of the greatest importance to the beginner, and it is expected that the exercises in compound expressions will give sufficient practice in the use of symbols.
