Excerpt: ...hear me, he, with the rest, sat, while I knelt and attended prayer. He then inquired whether I had the form of that prayer, or whether it was extemporaneous. Having told him that I made use of no form of prayer, he made some other remarks against the loudness with which I prayed; for I had previously told him that neither I nor his people could hear his exercises, and he had said it was not necessary they should. Without making any apology, for I had only spoken so as to be audible to the people, I proceeded to read the third chapter of John, and to address them. He afterwards said that he did not object to any thing I had said as to the nature and fruits of regeneration, and being born of the Spirit of God, only that without water haptism none could be saved;--and that if I persisted in directing the people not to attend mass, he should give orders that his people should not hear me. I told him I could not but say what the Bible said respecting images, and when his people inquired respecting their worship, 1 generally told them what I thought of it; but that it was not my-practice to introduce the subject of their worship directly, and if ever I had done so, it was not, as he said out of hatred to the church, but out of friendship to the Scriptures, and regard for the well being of the people.. y Ignorance of letters among the Fisher Cast. 10. Spoke the word to many in, the Mahratta village as well as in that of the Catholics. There is one Mahratta school here, which I visited, and in which I published the Gospel to the teachers and those who came in, and left tracts. There were about a dozen scholars;--not one fisherman's child. Such is the case at Versava; there is a Mahratta school there for a few of the higher casts, but not a soul...

The number reported as admitted to the church during the year which preceded the annual meeting, was 1,789. Letters have also been received from Messrs. Alexander and Hunt, who have charge of the seminary at Lahainaluna. They state that God has graciously smiled upon that institution. Mr. Alexander says, under date of November 12, "Many of our pupils have manifested deep concern for their souls7 salvation; and several give pleasing evidence that they have found the pearl of great price. Among the latter are some of the most promising young men in the nation." He also writes, "Our theological class has eight members, three of whom I hope will be licensed to preach next spring." From a letter of Mr. Lowell Smith, dated Honolulu, November 28, the following extract is taken: The last two or three years have been a time to try men's souls in Honolulu. Still a goodly number of the professed followers of Christ have stood firm, and evinced an attachment to his cause which the political revolutions have not been able to undermine. As soldiers of the cross they have not deserted their posts, but have attended regularly to the duties of the sanctuary, the weekly prayer meetings, church meetings, and the monthly concert, and have been ready unto every good work. But this cannot be said of all. Some have been unstable as the wind, and have gone after the Beast and False Prophet. Some have returned to a species of idolatry; others have become atheistical, and have forsaken even the form of godliness. Sin and death have made large inroads into this Second Church of Honolulu, within the...

Foreigners will make their horne there, and will introduce their vices; so that when we get ready to make a beginning, we shall find the people corrupted and wasting away." Stjanntiaf. LETTER FROM MR. BLODGET, FEBRUARY 20, 1856. Mr. Blodget has devoted most of his time, since he has been at Shanghai, to the acquisition of the lattguage which he expects to employ in proclaiming the unsearchable riches of Christ. He is now able, however, to address the Chinese in their own tongue with some satisfaction; and he is hoping to become more and more skillful and effective as a preacher of the Word. The present letter contains a very good description of his plans and labors; and the statement will introduce us to the earlier stages of missionary life in China. Preaching Places. Since the date of my last letter, my efforts among the people have begun to assume a more definite form and greater regularity. At first I conversed with individuals, and talked, as well as I could, to groups in the hamlets near our residence. I also visited neighboring villages on several occasions, to distribute books, and carry my message. In the month of November, I began to preach regularly on the Sabbath in a schoolroom, just then completed on our mission lot. It was built by Mr. Lai-sun for a girls' day school, which Mrs. Lai-sun was expecting to teach. The following month I increased the number of weekly services to three. These at the present time I count my regular services, adding to these occasional efforts, as I find time, ' opportunity, and strength We have recently changed our place of preaching, with a view to securing a greater number of hearers, persuaded that no economy is so bad as that which supports men whose...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Missionary Herald, Vol. 23: For the Year 1827 Great and noble as these objects are, and imperious as the claims are which have been described, there are still serious obstacles in the way of calling forth the full energies of the professed friends of God - those who have consecrated themselves and all that they possess to the service of their Lord. Among these obstacles must be mentioned the embarrass ments arising from obstructed commerce and disappointed plans of acquiri ing or employing property. There are those, who seem to imagine, that it all their expectations of worldly prosperity are not answered, they are excused from doing any thing for the relief of sorrow and suffering; or if God has taken away part of their property, even if it be a small part, they are to be justified in applying the remainder to their own use, without any sense of responsibility to Him. But in coming to these conclusions, they err against the plainest principles of the divine law, and do great injury to their own souls. The simple question is, when distant nations call to us for the Gospel, fire are able to send it? Not whether we can send it with little self-denial, with a small effort, which shall not interfere with any of our fa vorite plans of ease and personal gratification? But can we impart the means of salvation to our fellow sinne'rs by a great and long continued efl'ort, by the most strenuous exertions, and by such an agonizing struggle, as a drowning man would make for the preservation of his life, or as the votary of human applause would make for the vindication of his character. Ls money wanted? It must be provided, if it is at the disposal of the church and its friends. Are laborers needed? They must be inquired for and diligently sought, and suitably furnished for the work, and sent forth to it, at the ear liest moment possible. Excerpt: ...ue ignirict 'to do pryern," answering precisely to popery "telling the beadt." Profitless Discussion. 20. Although a Jewish missionary feels that to preach Christ and him crucified as the needful and only atonement for sin, is his one business, yet "questions of words and names and of their law" cannot always be avoided. He must be able to give a reason of his faith, and must not seem afraid to investigate points of difficulty. The Jewish mind is peculiar. Trained in the teachings of the Talmud, which constitutes their only literature, and their minds being cast in that mould, argument of a certain sort is their pride and delight. Profound questions that amount to nothing, brought forward and answered with a great display of learning; deep and subtile objections sought out with great labor, where none exist, and disposed of with equal labor; men of straw set up, and heavy batteries brought forward with great pomp to knock them down; all these constitute their style of reasoning. The missionary may wish to shun such vain talk; but he cannot always do so. Common politeness, which requires him to pass the compliments of the day with his visitors and talk of the weather, demands also that he pay some respect to the topics of conversation which his visitors introduce. The New Testament affords a boundless field for such questions and objections. The genealogy of Matthew, lying as a stumbling-block at the very threshold, and its apparent discrepancies with that of Luke; the different accounts of the resurrection, and many other such points, offer really serious questions which demand studious consideration; and that diversity which constitutes the charm of the four Evangelists, gives numberless occasions for...

Excerpt: ...The event proved that this step had been taken too late. He died in less than three weeks after he left Madras. Nestoriahs.--It was stated in the April Herald that the mission had been constrained to send two of their number to Teheran, --Messrs. Perkins and Stocking, --for the purpose of submitting to the government a correct view of their operations. This step had become necessary in consequence of the unfavorable report of two Mohammedan meerzas, appointed, --at the instance of the French envoy, and with the consent of the Russian ambassador, --to proceed to Oroomiah, and inquire into the truth of the allegation that the mission had detached certain Nestorians from their original ecclesiastical connection. After Messrs. Perkins and Stocking had made such statements and explanations as seemed to be called for, the Russian ambassador procured a firman, directing that the three Nestorians who were said to have been drawn off from their church and attached to another ecclesiastical body, should be summoned to Tabreez, and declare under oath whether the charge was true or not. Accordingly the individuals referred to, in company with Doct. Wright, proceeded to Tabreez, and arrived there, January 31. The examination took place, February 7. A full report of the proceedings was sent to the Shah, and also to the Russian ambassador at Teheran; but the final decision of the government had not transpired at the date of the last communication from the mission. Our brethren, however, anticipate a favorable issue of this unpleasant affair. Indeed the Russian consul at Tabreez informed Doct. Wright, that the result of the examination was highly honorable to the mission. Still it should be remembered that the influence of the Jesuits is very...

Excerpt: ...Home, Frontier, and Foreign Missionary Society was separated into "The Foreign Missionary Society of the United Brethren in Christ " and " The Home Missionary Society of the United Brethren in Christ." Each department is now being presented separately on its merits to our people. This change is meeting with universal favor. An educational campaign has been inaugurated to enlist every member of the church in the interests of foreign missions. A weekly, and in some cases a monthly, system of offerings to missions is being introduced, and already some congregations have increased their offerings to foreign missions more than two hundred per cent. Sixteen local churches have each definitely decided to support a "foreign parish " this year. One thousand one hundred and fifty young people have been enrolled in the study of "Daybreak in the Dark Continent" during the last eight months; and 438 students in our colleges have been pursuing a similar study, forty-two of whom are volunteers for foreign service. The word that is most popular with us now is "forward." From the beginning of our foreign missionary work there has been the most cordial cooperation with the work carried forward by the Congregational Church. At the second meeting of our missionary board, in July, 1855, the following resolution was approved: "That a committee of two be sent to the annual meeting of the American Missionary Association to be held in Chicago, September 26, 1855, and that they are hereby authorized to enter into an article of agreement respecting proposed cooperation in the work of missions in Africa." The association, in the years that followed, was so friendly that in 1882 the American Missionary...
