Download or read book The Mirage of Life Classic Reprint written by William Haig Miller and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-15 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mirage of Life This remarkable natural appearance is an opti cal illusion. Produced by the reflection of objects on the oblique rays of the sun refracted by the air, which is rarefied by the heat of the burning soil. It is apparently alluded to in the sacred Scriptures Isaiah 7: In the wilderness shall 'waters break out, and streams in the desert. And the parched ground shall become a pool, and the thirsty land springs of water. The word trans lated parched ground is, in the original, of thesame form as serab, the term which the Arabs in the present day employ when Speaking of the Mirage? Book The Mirage Vol 7 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Mirage Vol 7 Classic Reprint written by De Pauw University and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mirage, Vol. 7 Juniors, and'the preparation of a class-day play by the Seniors. It is in accordance with the former of these customs that the present Junior class issues the current volume of the mirage. It has been the aim of the editors to show college life, to point out the relations of the students to each other, to the University, and to the faculty; and to make plain the faults and merits of the institution as viewed by the student body. The editors have not considered themselves a self-appointed board of correction, whose duty it is to supervise the general administration of the University. Neither have they thought it advisable to ignore those things which the students, generally, consider as detrimental to their best interests. The editors hold that it is the purpose of an annual to bring about a better understanding between the students on the one side and the faculty, trustees and alumni on the other; and to this end they have directed their efforts. Many events of importance to the University mark the period that has intervened since the publication of the '96 mirage. Dr. John, whose merit as a man and scholar is recognized, not only in the University, but throughout this and adjoining states, has seen fit to resign the presidency, and has entered the lecture field. Sorry as the students are to lose the services of Dr. John, yet it is with, if possible, even greater respect and confidence that they turn to his successor, Dr. Gobin. His mild but firm discipline, his enthusiasm in student affairs, his belief in honor, which placed a student's wordabove circumstantial proof, coupled with his strong administration of the University's affairs, have won the love and confidence of every loyal student. Under Dr. Gobin's administration there has been the most complete union of faculty and students that has been seen in the University in a decade. Knowing, as the students do, that they have the confidence of their president and teachers, they have borne in quiet the irksome rules which a Board of Trustees has imposed upon society and social events at De Pauw; rules well fitted to a graded school, but scarcely applicable to men and women with years and ability sufficient to give them a place as thinkers in the ranks of high er education. We regret that these rules, once banished to the realm of the obsolete, along with the Sunday-afternoon lecture and the text book recitation, have been disinterred, and, with the addition of others still more ancient, again thrust upon us. In this work, now offered to English readers, we have pre sented to us a series of word-pictures, showing forth the uniqueness of his style, at once disconnected and fascinating. We see the pictures he describes through a sort of vague, fleeting mirage, though possessed of a degree of charm, a power of evocation exercised by few living writers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Breath of Life S life nears its end with me, I find myself medi tating more and more upon the mystery of its nature and origin, yet without the least hope that I can find out the ways of the Eternal in this or in any other world. In these studies I fancy I am about as far from mastering the mystery as the ant which I saw this morning industriously exploring a small section of the garden walk is from getting a clear idea of the geography of the North American Conti nent. But the ant was occupied and was apparently happy, and she must have learned something about a small fraction of that part of the earth's surface. During the whole course of my illness I felt as if chained by a thousand fetters to a hollow wall, which caused me torture. Little by little the wall released me, my sufferings decreased, the fetters loosened and fell apart. During the last two days I was held by a piece of tape, which now also was torn off, and I felt a sense of lightness, such as I had never before experienced. And she was so pretty, this girl, although her nose was not the clas sic shape, nor any of her features perfect. The burnished mass of her hair against the silky whiteness of her skin, the blue eyes like great clear pools, with their dark lashes, under their soft brown brows, and the colour of the mouth like a damask rose, these were the birthday gifts of Nature to her at the commence ment of her sixteenth year. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Light of Life: The Mastery of Death "The Light shineth in darkness, and the darkness comprehendeth it not." For the past two thousand years at least, the world may be said to have been in a condition of mental and spiritual darkness. This period, or the earlier part of it, is called the Dark Age. The history of this age, distinguished by nothing so much as mans inhumanity to man, is familiar to all, and needs no recapitulation. A few pessimists of the present proclaim that the age of darkness is by no means at an end, and some are wont to predict even a darker age to follow, but the consciousness of the optimistic majority is awakening responsive to the Dawn that is surely breaking over the world, repudiating such pessimistic prognostications as reactionary and retrogressive. We have but to take the mental and moral conditions of two hundred, or even a hundred, years ago and compare them with the conditions of today to become conscious of this wonderful illumination and its many revelations. And what is this New Light that is thus suffusing the earth, working all these wondrous changes, and transforming the world and its ways? It is the same Light that shone in the darkness of the past, but which the shadowed mind of man was unable then to perceive, or to utilize.
