For relief and inspiration, Conley, the CEO and founder of Joie de Vivre Hospitality, turned to psychologist Abraham Maslow's iconic Hierarchy of Needs. This book explores how Conley's company "the second largest boutique hotelier in the world" overcame the storm that hit the travel industry by applying Maslow's theory to what Conley identifies as the key Relationship Truths in business with Employees, Customers and Investors. Part memoir, part theory, and part application, the book tells of Joie de Vivre's remarkable transformation while providing real world examples from other companies and showing how readers can bring about similar changes in their work and personal lives. Conley explains how to understand the motivations of employees, customers, bosses, and investors, and use that understanding to foster better relationships and build an enduring and profitable corporate culture.

Book Switch

  • Author : Chip Heath
  • Publisher : Crown Currency
  • Release : 2010-02-16
  • ISBN : 030759016X
  • Pages : 322 pages

Download or read book Switch written by Chip Heath and published by Crown Currency. This book was released on 2010-02-16 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is it so hard to make lasting changes in our companies, in our communities, and in our own lives? The primary obstacle is a conflict that's built into our brains, say Chip and Dan Heath, authors of the critically acclaimed bestseller Made to Stick. Psychologists have discovered that our minds are ruled by two different systems - the rational mind and the emotional mind—that compete for control. The rational mind wants a great beach body; the emotional mind wants that Oreo cookie. The rational mind wants to change something at work; the emotional mind loves the comfort of the existing routine. This tension can doom a change effort - but if it is overcome, change can come quickly. In Switch, the Heaths show how everyday people - employees and managers, parents and nurses - have united both minds and, as a result, achieved dramatic results: • The lowly medical interns who managed to defeat an entrenched, decades-old medical practice that was endangering patients • The home-organizing guru who developed a simple technique for overcoming the dread of housekeeping • The manager who transformed a lackadaisical customer-support team into service zealots by removing a standard tool of customer service In a compelling, story-driven narrative, the Heaths bring together decades of counterintuitive research in psychology, sociology, and other fields to shed new light on how we can effect transformative change. Switch shows that successful changes follow a pattern, a pattern you can use to make the changes that matter to you, whether your interest is in changing the world or changing your waistline.

The Knowers continue to follow him blindly and question nothing. The Exalter promises to end all violence and solve economic turmoil in this futuristic setting. Those unwilling to accept the Exalter are forced slaves to these so-called believers working for mandatory minimal wages, and small governmental food rations. These unfortunate men, women, and children are globally known as Derogates. Derogates are separated from normal society in poverty stricken villages. In this uncertain future, Nicolai struggles with the battles in his personal life. As his work becomes meaningless his own wife begins to slip away from him. He cant seem to find real purpose. Droughts, strange earthly phenomenons, famines, and the release of countless prisoners during the Great Pardon cause him and others to question the Exalters rule. Where are these promises of peace? When the unanswered disappearances of Derogates are discovered mass speculation and chaos follow. Nicolai finds himself searching for answers about his wife, his government, and even the Exalter himself. Events unfold and Nicolai never imagined he would be fleeing for his very life. Stresses build and armies begin to turn on their leaders as a new war looms on the horizon. This war is for individual survival. The Exalter looked confident like that of a strong lion surrounded by starved and weakened animals. My ways are easy to follow without guilt or heavy expectations. How will all of this end and how many will live or die?

Book excerpt: Discover the miracle you’ve been looking for through an exploration of nine miracles of Jesus, each filled with meaning, insight, and discovery for all who desperately need a miracle of their own. Healing the blind. Walking on water. Calming the storm. Feeding thousands with a few loaves and fish. Every miracle Jesus performed was for a purpose. There was provision for that specific moment in time. But what if each miracle was also embedded with the promise of future provision…for you? In Find Your Miracle, New York Times best-selling authors Kerry and Chris Shook take a fresh look at nine of Jesus’s most incredible times of healing and supernatural intervention. The Shooks unpack these moments in modern language to usher you into the pain, desperation, breakthrough, and miracle of each encounter. Plus they reveal a “miracle map” that connects that moment long ago to our needs today for revelation, transformation, and restoration. Weaving together the biblical narrative with contemporary real-life application, Kerry and Chris Shook arrange these New Testament miracles under four overarching descriptions of Jesus the Miracle Worker: the Healer, the Provider, the Storm Chaser, and the Life Giver. Rather than running from our overwhelming situations, the Shooks encourage us to remain steady, fully trusting that Jesus stands ready to guide us to the miracle we most need, and possibly least expect.

Book The Way It Was

    Book Details:
  • Author : Duane C. Spriestersbach
  • Publisher : University of Iowa Press
  • Release :
  • ISBN : 1587293617
  • Pages : 298 pages

Download or read book The Way It Was written by Duane C. Spriestersbach and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fall of 1964 was an exciting time at the University of Iowa. Its fourteenth president, Howard Bowen, had just arrived, and on a sunny October afternoon he made his first speech to the faculty. This occasion was note worthy enough—former president Virgil Hancher had held the job for twenty-four years—to attract the attention of a professor of speech pathology who had previously confined his considerable energies to teaching and research. Bowen's vision of what the university could become was so intriguing, so compelling, that this professor wrote and offered to help him achieve his objectives in any way possible. This quixotic offer changed Duane Spriestersbach's life and becomes the starting point for his story of his years as a University of Iowa administrator. Drawing upon his personal files, the university archives, and interviews with many faculty members and administrators, Spriestersbach has created both an institutional and a personal history of the university. Judged by any standard, these years were tumultuous ones for higher education. Economic pressures from the state legislature, issues surrounding grants from such agencies as the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation, the civil rights movement, student and faculty protests during the Vietnam era, massive changes in the physical and administrative shape of the campus, and the computerization of all parts of campus life had far-reaching consequences. Spriestersbach was at the center of these events at the University of Iowa; his perspective is unique, refreshing, and educational. Spriestersbach's account of the Vietnam years and of the evolution of computers at Iowa will be particularly interesting to readers. He reported to four presidents, served as acting president, managed hundreds of meetings both dramatic and mundane, and reacted to many administrative restructurings. In this story of his life at the University of Iowa, he reveals the truth behind these words from his 1964 letter to President Bowen: “I think I am an idealist, a person with imagination, and a guy in a hurry. I believe investigation will show that I am a person with competitive administrative and executive abilities.”
