Book Unequal Accommodation of Minority Rights

Download or read book Unequal Accommodation of Minority Rights written by Tamás Kiss and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-31 with total page 553 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an in-depth multidisciplinary analysis of the major social and political processes affecting Hungarians in Romania after the overthrow of the Communist regime in 1989. The volume highlights the interdependence between the ethno-political strategies of minority elites and Romania's minority policy regime on the one hand, and social processes such as ethnic boundary making and ethnic stratification on the other. The chapters combine perspectives from a variety of disciplines including political science and the sociology of ethnic relations, supported by the findings of a broad array of empirical investigations carried out in Transylvania. It will therefore be of particular interest to scholars and students with a focus on minority politics, ethnic mobilization and nationalism, as well as researchers of ethnic relations, ethnic boundary making, social distances and ethnic inequalities.

Book Nationalist Politics and Everyday Ethnicity in a Transylvanian Town

Download or read book Nationalist Politics and Everyday Ethnicity in a Transylvanian Town written by Rogers Brubaker and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Situated on the geographic margins of two nations, yet imagined as central to each, Transylvania has long been a site of nationalist struggles. Since the fall of communism, these struggles have been particularly intense in Cluj, Transylvania's cultural and political center. Yet heated nationalist rhetoric has evoked only muted popular response. The citizens of Cluj--the Romanian-speaking majority and the Hungarian-speaking minority--have been largely indifferent to the nationalist claims made in their names. Based on seven years of field research, this book examines not only the sharply polarized fields of nationalist politics--in Cluj, Transylvania, and the wider region--but also the more fluid terrain on which ethnicity and nationhood are experienced, enacted, and understood in everyday life. In doing so the book addresses fundamental questions about ethnicity: where it is, when it matters, and how it works. Bridging conventional divisions of academic labor, Rogers Brubaker and his collaborators employ perspectives seldom found together: historical and ethnographic, institutional and interactional, political and experiential. Further developing the argument of Brubaker's groundbreaking Ethnicity without Groups, the book demonstrates that it is ultimately in and through everyday experience--as much as in political contestation or cultural articulation--that ethnicity and nationhood are produced and reproduced as basic categories of social and political life.

Book The Hungarian Minority of Transylvania

Download or read book The Hungarian Minority of Transylvania written by Nicolas Franckx and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hungarian Minority of Transylvania gives an overview of the Hungarian minority's situation between the end of Communism and Romania's entry into the EU. In the historical foreword, the author sets the scenes while re-creating the dialectic relation between both nations. The author also provides a theoretical background on minority rights, with the goal to define to which minority sub-category belongs the Hungarian minority of Romania. The third section of the study reviews the minority rights legislation in force in Romania in 1990-2007 (international texts, bilateral treaties, Romanian legislation). The last chapter presents an overview of the situation in the field, using reports by international human rights organisations, local NGOs and civil rights activists.

Book Central European Crossroads

Download or read book Central European Crossroads written by Pieter van Duin and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2009 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the four decades of the communist regime in Czechoslovakia a vast literature on working-class movements has been produced but it has hardly any value for today's scholarship. This remarkable study reopens the field. Based on Czech, Slovak, German and other sources, it focuses on the history of the multi-ethnic social democratic labor movement in Slovakia's capital Bratislava during the period 1867-1921, and on the process of national revolution during the years 1918-19 in particular. The study places the historic change of the former Pressburg into the modern Bratislava in the broader context of the development of multinational pre-1918 Hungary, the evolution of social, ethnic, and political relations in multi-ethnic Pressburg (a 'tri-national' city of Germans, Magyars, and Slovaks), and the development of the multinational labor movement in Hungary and the Habsburg Empire as a whole.
