Download or read book New Techniques and Technologies in Thin Coal Seam Exploitation written by Artur Dyczko and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2011-12-16 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides an up-to-date overview of the Polish and international experience in the area of thin coal seam mining with an emphasis on implementation of the plow technology in mining. The implementation of the plow technology in Poland is performed by young engineers for whom the automated extraction system presents itself as a great challenge showing the direction of future developments: a production mining face manned by a skeleton crew, fully utilizing the potential offered by the information technology. They create new ways and means of running the production processes, which are successfully used together with the new generation plows. Successive generations of young mining engineers entering their careers are equipped with a new type of ability and, most of all, awareness which is characterized by a new understanding of reality, in which "real" is what is on the screen. They are the guarantee that this direction of research and the drive towards minimizing human involvement in the underground production chores will receive increasing focus and will remain the area of development. The experiences to-date of three mines (KWK Zofiówka, KWK Jas-Mos, and LW Bogdanka SA) show that there is a real potential for the Polish companies to join in the research aimed at developing new plow installations.

Download or read book Coal written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-12-21 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coal will continue to provide a major portion of energy requirements in the United States for at least the next several decades. It is imperative that accurate information describing the amount, location, and quality of the coal resources and reserves be available to fulfill energy needs. It is also important that the United States extract its coal resources efficiently, safely, and in an environmentally responsible manner. A renewed focus on federal support for coal-related research, coordinated across agencies and with the active participation of the states and industrial sector, is a critical element for each of these requirements. Coal focuses on the research and development needs and priorities in the areas of coal resource and reserve assessments, coal mining and processing, transportation of coal and coal products, and coal utilization.

Book Methods and Costs of Thin seam Mining Final Report 25 September 1977 24 January 1979 Thin Seam in Association with a Thick Seam

Download or read book Methods and Costs of Thin seam Mining Final Report 25 September 1977 24 January 1979 Thin Seam in Association with a Thick Seam written by and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report defines the state of the art (circa 1978) in removing thin coal seams associated with vastly thicker seams found in the surface coal mines of the western United States. New techniques are evaluated and an innovative method and machine is proposed. Western states resource recovery regulations are addressed and representative mining operations are examined. Thin seam recovery is investigated through its effect on (1) overburden removal, (2) conventional seam extraction methods, and (3) innovative techniques. Equations and graphs are used to accommodate the variable stratigraphic positions in the mining sequence on which thin seams occur. Industrial concern and agency regulations provided the impetus for this study of total resource recovery. The results are a compendium of thin seam removal methods and costs. The work explains how the mining industry recovers thin coal seams in western surface mines where extremely thick seams naturally hold the most attention. It explains what new developments imply and where to look for new improvements and their probable adaptability.

Excerpt: ...same general inclination of the seam on the side of the saddle to be mined, and when it reaches the seam, to continue it in the seam to the desired depth.. '-'hen the seam does not outcrop on the surface, and it can be opened by a shaft that will, in the case of an inclined seam, reach the coal at its lowest level and about in the center of the strike of the seam, or when the seam is fiat a shaft will cut it nearly in the center of the coal bed, such an opening is the only kind practicable. Drifts.--The height of a drift depends largely on the thickness and inclination of the seam. When possible, the height should be from 6 ft. to 7 ft. in the clear. To obtain such a height in a flat thin seam or a thin seam 0'1 light pitch requires the brushing down of top or blowing up of bottom. This adds considerable to the cost of driving the drift, and the extent to which it should be done must be determined by conditions at the mine. In a thick seam or one having a heavy pitch a height of about 7 ft. in the clear is best. The width of a drift depends on the width of the mine cars used, the thickness and inclination of the coal seam, the character of the top and bottom, and whether the drift is to be single or double tracked. It must have suilicient width to provide clearance for the mine car, with enough room on one side to provide for a drainage ditch and enough additional space for men to pass mine cars without danger of being crushed against the rib. If the seam is a comparatively thin one lying at considerable inclination it will be necessary to do some rock work to provide the required width. If the seam is a thick one, or is of such light pitch that the desired width can be secured in coal, the character of the top and bottom.will...

Book Advanced Mine Ventilation

Download or read book Advanced Mine Ventilation written by Pramod Thakur and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2018-11-23 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advanced Mine Ventilation presents the reader with a unique book providing the theory and applications for designing mine ventilation with computers, controlling respirable coal dust and diesel particulate matter, combustible gas control and, mine fire management. The book summarizes the latest knowledge created in the past 40 years in these areas. Authored by an expert in the field with 50 years' experience, the book is a great combination of theory and applications. The mine ventilation section provides computer programs (both FORTRAN and C++) to calculate not only air quantities and pressure losses but also the concentration of any pollutant in all junctions and branches of the mine network. Small particle mechanics and dust control is covered in the second section of the book. The third section on combustible gas control discusses all aspects of mine gases from origin to control. The last section on mine fire control discusses spontaneous combustion, frictional ignitions, mine explosions, and mine sealing and recovery. The book is not only a very good reference book but also an excellent textbook for two graduate level courses in Mining Engineering. Provides the latest knowledge on the four related topics of mine environment control; that is, ventilation, dust, gas, and fire in a single volume Computer simulation of mine ventilation in both FORTRAN and C++ State-of-the-art respirable dust control Mine degasification and methane production from a coal lease Mine fire management
