This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mineralogy of the Chicago Area Although its rocks enclose no stores of precious metals or minerals used as gems or for ornamental work, and although lists of mineral localities do not mention Cook County, still the number of minerals that are found is great enough to ac complish several desirable results. First, they represent five out of the eight great groups or classes into which the mineral world is divided; second, they illustrate the chemical, crystal lographic, optic, and other physical properties of minerals; third, they demonstrate the chief methods of investigation; fourth, some of them are of such occurrence as to make contribution to the science of Mineralogy. Since then the book has been reprinted three times, but till now without revision. Starting with the idea of a simple revision, I have found it necessary to rewrite and to enlarge it; but in doing this, I have been careful to retain the essential features of its original arrangement. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mineralogy: An Introduction to the Scientific Study of Minerals The student Will not find in the following pages any systematic account of the modes of occurrence of minerals, their geological distribution, their origin, their alterations, or their artificial reproduction, although these constitute the most important, and, perhaps, the most interesting section of Mineralogy proper. There are no chapters upon these subjects because, in my Opinion, they deserve to form a separate volume, and cannot be treated adequately in a volume dealing with the characters and properties of minerals. The essential characters of a mineral, moreover, are quite independent of its source or previous history, and may well be made the first and separate object of study. In the description of mineral species the modern text-book often endeavours to give too much information, and ends by becoming a book of reference rather than a treatise which can be read by the student. This should no longer be necessary, now that Dana's System and Hintze's Handbuch are available; in the present volume an attempt is made to select for the student all that he requires for an elementary acquaint ance with the subject. The species described are those which he will find in all museums, and most of them he may collect for himself. The customary lists of localities are replaced by a description of a few typical occurrences for each important species by a careful study of the corresponding specimens the beginner should obtain the information which will enable him to pursue the subjects of geological and chemical mineralogy with some previous knowledge of minerals. The few angles given are generally only such as are sufficient for the calculation of the axial ratios or for simple exercises in the calculation of indices. In the discussion of optical characters, the introduction of two ellipsoids may appear unnecessary and even confusing; the Fresnel Ellipsoid has been introduced in order to avoid incorrect statements about optic axes, but it will be found that the indicatrix is the only ellipsoid subsequently employed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mineralogy: An Introduction to the Study of Minerals and Crystals Furthermore, an attempt has been made to vitalize the subject as much as possible, and accordingly there are chapters on the importance of mineralogy in modern civilization, on gems and precious stones, and on the production and uses Of the important economic minerals. Numerous photographs and short Sketches of distinguished mineralogists have also been introduced in the hope that they will add a human touch. The chapters on crystallography are based very largely upon the senior author's Essentials of Crystallography, while much of the material in the descriptions of the 150 minerals given in this text has been taken from. His Descriptive Mineralogy. The determinative tables are an abridgment of the authors' Mineral Tables. We are greatly indebted to Mr. George R. Swain, technical expert in photography in the University of Michigan, whose varied experience and unusual skill made the excellent photographs of models and minerals possible; also to Dr. George F. Kunz for valuable assistance in securing a considerable number of very desirable photographs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Text Book of Mineralogy

Download or read book A Text Book of Mineralogy written by Edward Salisbury Dana and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-27 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Mineralogy: With an Extended Treatise on Crystallography and Physical Mineralogy The preparation of a text-book of Mineralogy was undertaken in 1868, by Prof. J. D. Dana, immediately after the publication of the fifth edition of the System of Mineralogy. The state of his health, however, early compelled him to relinquish the work, and he was not able subsequently to resume it. Finally, after the lapse of seven years, the editorship of the volume was placed in the hands of the writer, who has endeavored to carry out the original plan. The work is intended to meet the requirements of class instruction. With this end in view the Descriptive part has been made subordinate to the more important subjects embraced under Physical Mineralogy. Book Manual of Mineralogy and Geology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Manual of Mineralogy and Geology Classic Reprint written by Ebenezer Emmons and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-22 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Mineralogy and Geology A new edition of the following work having been call ed for, the author has been induced to remodel it, by the conviction that a method of teaching and studying the science different from, and superior to, that which had for merly been pursued in this country, ought to be adopted. That method is well known to have possessed too much of a traditionary character, and to have obliged the stu dent to depend more upon the ipse. Diorit of his instructor than his own investigation. In preparing this edition it has been the design of the author, so far as it was in his power, to furnish the student with a guide by means of which he might be satisfactorily conducted through the process of examining minerals, to the attainment of cor rect results. To accomplish this, sufficient information is given in the following pages, to enable him rightly to employ the characters of mineral substances and to trace the relations existing between them.
