Book The Wearing Characteristics of Mineral Aggregates in Highway Pavements

Download or read book The Wearing Characteristics of Mineral Aggregates in Highway Pavements written by John W. Webb and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifteen asphaltic concrete and seventeen portland cement concrete pavements located in Virginia were chosen for studies of aggregate wear and related wet pavement friction. Coarse aggregates from thirteen different geologic formations and quarry sources had been utilized in construction of the pavements. Field measurements of wet friction and pavement profiles and laboratory studies of aggregate petrography and surface microtexture were emphasized. The results of the research showed that aggregates can be classified into three categories based on their response to the wearing stresses of vehicle tires: (1) very homogeneous aggregates lacking significant zones and planes of weakness wear predominantly by abrasion; (2) aggregates marked by zones and planes of weakness wear predominantly by degradation or particle removal; and (3) aggregates of intermediate physical structure wear by a combination of abrasion and degradation. Polishing is most common with aggregates undergoing abrasion, the rate being dependent on the absolute hardness of the mineral constituents. Polishing removes micro-asperities and reduces the adhesion component of wet friction. The loss of macrotexture, or pavement relief, is common where degradation prevails. This loss, if excessive, retards water removal or drainage and adversely affects the hysteresis or tire deformation component of pavement friction. Optimum wet friction conditions are judged to prevail when a combination of abrasion and degradation creates an aggregate surface containing significant elements of both macro- and microtexture. It is concluded that careful petrographic study of aggregate mineralogy and texture will allow a high degree of prediction of the resulting surface configuration as aggregates wear under traffic.

Book The Importance of Petrological Petrographical and Mineralogical Characteristics of Aggregates in Very High Strength Concrete

Download or read book The Importance of Petrological Petrographical and Mineralogical Characteristics of Aggregates in Very High Strength Concrete written by P-C Aïtcin and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aggregate intrinsic strength, particularly that of coarse aggregates, receives scant attention from concrete technologists and researchers as long as the w/c ratio falls within the 0.50-to-0.70 range, primarily due to the fact that the cement-aggregate bond or the hydrated cement paste fail long before aggregates do.

Book Applied Mineralogy of Cement Concrete

Download or read book Applied Mineralogy of Cement Concrete written by Maarten A.T.M. Broekmans and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 74 of Reviews in Mineralogy and Geochemistry contains a selection of papers on the applied mineralogy of cement and concrete, by far the most popular modern building material by volume, with an annual production exceeding 9 billion cubic meters, and steadily growing. Not even all 'concrete' topics can be covered by a single volume, but an interesting assortment was finally obtained. The seven chapters deal with mineralogy and chemistry of (alumina) clinker production and hydration (Pöllmann), alternative raw clinkering materials to reduce CO2 emission (Justnes), assessment of clinker constituents by optical and electron microscopy (Stutzman), industrial assessment of raw materials, cement and concrete using X-ray methods in different applications (Meier et al.), in situ investigation of clinker and cement hydration based on quantitative crystallographic phase analysis (Aranda et al.), characterization and properties of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) to improve cement and concrete properties (Snellings et al.), and deleterious alkali-aggregate reaction (AAR) in concrete (Broekmans).

Book Proceedings of the RILEM International Symposium on Bituminous Materials

Download or read book Proceedings of the RILEM International Symposium on Bituminous Materials written by Hervé Di Benedetto and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-09-25 with total page 1806 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume highlights the latest advances, innovations, and applications in bituminous materials and structures and asphalt pavement technology, as presented by leading international researchers and engineers at the RILEM International Symposium on Bituminous Materials (ISBM), held in Lyon, France on December 14-16, 2020. The symposium represents a joint effort of three RILEM Technical Committees from Cluster F: 264-RAP “Asphalt Pavement Recycling”, 272-PIM “Phase and Interphase Behaviour of Bituminous Materials”, and 278-CHA “Crack-Healing of Asphalt Pavement Materials”. It covers a diverse range of topics concerning bituminous materials (bitumen, mastics, mixtures) and road, railway and airport pavement structures, including: recycling, phase and interphase behaviour, cracking and healing, modification and innovative materials, durability and environmental aspects, testing and modelling, multi-scale properties, surface characteristics, structure performance, modelling and design, non-destructive testing, back-analysis, and Life Cycle Assessment. The contributions, which were selected by means of a rigorous international peer-review process, present a wealth of exciting ideas that will open novel research directions and foster new multidisciplinary collaborations.
