Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the Gettysburg Campaign of the American Civil War in late July 1863, the Union Army of the Potomac, commanded by Major General George G. Meade, pursued the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, commanded by General Robert E. Lee, south into Central Virginia. There followed a series of maneuvers and engagements as the two commanders jockeyed for position. The Mine Run Campaign constitutes one of these episodes and was conducted during the period 20 October 1863 to 2 December 1863. Little study has been devoted to this rather obscure campaign because of its relatively inconclusive results. However, the campaign does provide a unique opportunity to analyze the actions and thought processes of an army commander at the operational level of war. Since the Mine Run Campaign was Meade's first army level offensive operation, this paper is focused on his application of the Operational Art. To that end this study explores the factors that influence the development of the army commander's intent, the design of his campaign plan, and the execution of the campaign in combat operations.

Book excerpt: “[Does]an excellent job portraying General Hardin’s life in the context of a changing America . . . a definitive biography of a forgotten hero” (Civil War News). Nominated for the Gilder Lehrman Prize, this is the first biography devoted to the life of a remarkable young man who, in the words of Civil War historian Ezra Warner, “embarked upon a combat career which has few parallels in the annals of the army for gallantry, wounds sustained, and the obscurity into which he had lapsed a generation before his death.” From Hardin’s childhood in Illinois, where a slave girl implanted in him a fear of ghosts, to his attendance at West Point, along with other future luminaries, to his service on the frontier, where he took particular note of the bearing of the Cheyenne, Hardin’s life reveals the progress of a century. Made Brigadier General at age twenty-seven, Hardin fought with distinction at Malvern Hill, Second Manassas, Gettysburg, Grant’s Overland Campaign, and the July 1864 Rebel raid on Washington. He was wounded four times, nearly died on two occasions, and lost an arm during the war. On one occasion, he was ambushed on a road by Mosby’s Men, one of whom may have been Lincoln conspirator Lewis Paine. Hardin himself took part in the hunt for John Wilkes Booth after Lincoln’s assassination. Though General Hardin’s mother skillfully played upon her friendship with the President and the First Lady to advance her son’s career, his gallantry and leadership in combat sufficed to earn him renown. Lincoln’s Bold Lion “restores the man’s rightful position as an American hero” (Chicago Daily Herald).

Book Meade s Pursuit of Lee

Download or read book Meade s Pursuit of Lee written by Sands A. Robnick and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Major General George Meade took command of the Army of the Potomac on June 28, 1863. Three days later his army defeated the Army of Northern Virginia commanded by General Robert E. Lee. Meade pursued Lee for the remainder of the summer and failed to bring him to battle and defeat him. He allowed Lee to escape at Williamsport and failed to defeat him at Manassas Gap. Meade had three other opportunities; at Bristoe Station, Rappahannock Bridge, and Mine Run, to bring Lee to battle, but failed to take advantage of the situation to decisively defeat Lee. In this study, the factors affecting Meade's inability to bring Lee to battle are explored in an attempt to explain his reluctance to decisively engage Lee's army. Those factors included his lieutenants, the press and politicians, as well as Meade's own interpretation of the orders which placed him in command of the Army of the Potomac for a period longer than any other general.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the US Army to succeed in the 21st Century, Soldiers of all ranks must understand and use Mission Command. Mission Command empowers leaders at all levels, allowing them to synchronize all warfighting functions and information systems to seize, retain, and exploit the initiative against a range of adversaries. This collection of historical vignettes seeks to sharpen our understanding of Mission Command philosophy and practice by providing examples from the past in which Mission Command principles played a decisive role. Some vignettes show junior officers following their commander's intent and exercising disciplined initiative in very chaotic combat operations. Others recount how field grade officers built cohesive teams that relied on mutual trust to achieve key operational objectives. Each historical account is complemented by an annotated explanation of how the six Mission Command principles shaped the action. For this reason, the collection is ideal for leader development in the Army school system as well as for unit and individual professional development. Mission Command places great responsibility on our Soldiers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Described by John Esten Cooke, of JEB Stuart’s staff, as “one of the liveliest episodes of the late war” the Bristoe Campaign was a small and seemingly unimportant event sandwiched between the battle at Gettysburg and the Wilderness bloodbath. Bristoe receives scant attention from historians, despite being an attempt by Lee, to seize the strategic initiative. Marking the decline in Confederate leadership, Lee’s inability to compensate, and the growing Union confidence and capability. The campaign outcome was significant; being the turning point of the war as Lee was now on the defensive and the Union forces held the initiative.

Book The Gettysburg Campaign

Download or read book The Gettysburg Campaign written by Edwin B. Coddington and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 1997-03 with total page 934 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Battle of Gettysburg remains one of the most controversial military actions in America's history, and one of the most studied. Professor Coddington's is an analysis not only of the battle proper, but of the actions of both Union and Confederate armies for the six months prior to the battle and the factors affecting General Meade’s decision not to pursue the retreating Confederate forces. This book contends that Gettysburg was a crucial Union victory, primarily because of the effective leadership of Union forces—not, as has often been said, only because the North was the beneficiary of Lee's mistakes. Scrupulously documented and rich in fascinating detail, The Gettysburg Campaign stands as one of the landmark works in the history of the Civil War.
