Book The Milkmaid by Johannes Vermeer

Download or read book The Milkmaid by Johannes Vermeer written by Walter A. Liedtke and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2009 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this catalogue for the exhibition, Walter Liedtke, Curator of Paintings at the Metropolitan, drawing on the Museum's five Vermeers, scenes by other Dutch masters in the Museum's collection, including Pieter de Hooch, Gabriel Metsu, Nicolaes Maes, and Emanuel de Witte, and several works on paper, places the picture in the context of the artist's brief career and relates it to contemporary developments in Dutch art. In addition to an extended discussion of the painting's provenance, he provides a detailed study of the composition, the several revisions made during the course of execution, and the subtle relationships between light and shadow, color, contour, and shape. And he proposes a most intriguing argument for an erotic subtext, pointing out that, like maids and kitchen maids in earlier Netherlandish art, the figure in The Milkmaid was meant to attract the male viewer, to rouse in him temptation and restraint, desire and reservation, while the kitchen maid herself, endowed with traits typically reserved for higher-class women and surrounded by references to romance both literal and oblique, is presented as having amorous thoughts of her own.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sultan, Sultan, & Sultan, Counselors at Law was among the oldest, mustiest, and most dignified firms in New York, now represented by the last of his line, Wm Sultan, an old-young man who desires nothing more than to work on his uncle's Life & Letters. His staff (he would have been horrified to learn they were known as Sultan's Harem in the building) is bored to tears, and wants something more exciting to bring their careful, respectable employer to life. Murder does the trick. Said staff includes Kelly, Sultan's brunette secretary: chic, sardonic, and the brains of the operation; Roberts, the athletic, blonde receptionist: well able to take care of herself; and Morgan, the red-headed file clerk: impetuous, irrepressible, and capable of speaking several dialects at once while working undercover. Readers who enjoy light, humorous mysteries with entertaining characters and swift plotting will appreciate an introduction to Sultan's Harem. In Drink the Green Water (1948), Wm Sultan discovers a mystery involving a lost toe within some dusty correspondence, leading to shenanigans with the possible heirs of the Silliman fortune-and murder. In The Milkmaid's Millions (1948), Wm Sultan is goaded by his staff into helping a demure, young milkmaid who stands to inherit a fortune. Not everyone appreciates his help, and it isn't long before Sultan himself is the target of a police investigation for murder. Sultan finds he must deal not only with the District Attorney, but with the Harem's own unorthodox actions to keep him safe. Book Ten Global Trends Every Smart Person Should Know

Download or read book Ten Global Trends Every Smart Person Should Know written by Ronald Bailey and published by Cato Institute. This book was released on 2020-08-31 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I would say that learning this material ... has lifted some of the existential weight from me. Things aren’t as bad as they are trumpeted to be. In fact, they’re quite a bit better, and they’re getting better, and so we’re doing a better job than we thought. There’s more to us than we thought. We’re adopting our responsibilities as stewards of the planet rapidly. We are moving towards improving everyone’s life." —Jordan B. Peterson, Beyond Order: 12 More Rules for Life Think the world is getting worse? If so, you’re wrong. The world is, for the most part, actually getting better. But 58 percent of people in 17 countries who were surveyed in 2016 thought that the world was either getting worse or staying the same. Americans were even more glum: 65 percent thought the world was getting worse and only 6 percent thought it was getting better. The uncontroversial data on major global trends in this book will persuade you that this dark view of the state of humanity and the natural world is, in large part, badly mistaken. World population will peak at 8–9 billion before the end of this century, as the global fertility rate continues its fall from 6 children per woman in 1960 to the current rate of 2.4. The global absolute poverty rate has fallen from 42 percent in 1981 to 8.6 percent today. Satellite data show that forest area has been expanding since 1982. Natural resources are becoming ever cheaper and more abundant. Since 1900, the average life expectancy has more than doubled, reaching more than 72 years globally. Of course, major concerns such as climate change, marine plastic pollution, and declining wildlife populations are still with us, but many of these problems are already being ameliorated as a result of the favorable economic, social, and technological trends that are documented in this book. You can’t fix what is wrong in the world if you don’t know what’s actually happening. Ten Global Trends Every Smart Person Should Know will provide busy people with quick-to-read, easily understandable, and entertaining access to surprising facts that they need to know about how the world is really faring.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A news item announcing the finding of a Hitler Album stimulates Emily’s interest in the world of lost and stolen art. While studying the subject on the Internet, she recognizes Raphael’s sixteenth century masterpiece, The Madonna of the Veil, as part of the art collection in the villa of Franco, the drug lord, in Columbia. She is determined to confirm that his art collection includes stolen paintings and, in the process, uncovers a cache of artifacts thought to be from the Nazi looting of European museums during World War II. Her resolve to acquire the artifacts and return them to the original owners entices her to invest in Franco’s opiate drug operation. While she’s negotiating for the paintings, her young daughter Susan stumbles into a sophisticated art-reproduction operation that replicates original oil paintings, including the carbon-dating test. Her task team works their way through the confusing underground market in art spurred by insurance companies fighting fraudulent loss claims and uncooperative museums.

Book The Fossil Fuelled Climate Crisis

Download or read book The Fossil Fuelled Climate Crisis written by Raymond Murphy and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-29 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the threat posed by the continued use of fossil fuels. By utilizing Elizabeth Shove’s social practices approach and Murphy’s own social closure framework, the book examines the accelerating treadmill of carbon-polluting practices. It incorporates externalities theory to investigate how the full cost of fossil fuels is paid by others rather than users, and to demonstrate that the environmental commons is a medium for conveying intergenerational monopolisation and exclusion in the Anthropocene. Murphy uncovers a pattern of opposition to change when exploiting valuable but dangerous resources. He argues that a new faith in mastering nature is emerging as a belief in just-in-time technological solutions to circumvent having to change fossil-fuelled practices. The book then moves on to assess proposed solutions, including Beck’s staging of risk and his hypothesis that the anticipation of global catastrophe will incite emancipation. It proposes a novel approach to enhancing foresight and avoid incubating disaster. It will appeal to readers interested in an original social science analysis of this creeping crisis and its resolution.
