Book Monuments in gratitude to the Red Army in communist and post communist Poland

Download or read book Monuments in gratitude to the Red Army in communist and post communist Poland written by Dominika Czarnecka and published by Harmattan Hongrie. This book was released on 2021-09-24 with total page 734 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: « Monuments in gratitude » to the Red Army in Poland are among the most numerous and well-known commemorative structures from the communist period. This does not mean, however, that the history of their construction and existence has already been extensively studied and described. In post-communist Poland, the « monument heritage » is regarded as an important part of recent history of Poland or of Central-Eastern Europe, even though the topic still gives rise to much controversy. Dominika Czarnecka's book is the first attempt at a synthetic presentation of the history of monuments to the Red Army erected outside of permanent cemeteries in post-war Poland. The work was awarded a distinction at the Wladyslaw Pobóg-Malinowski Contest for the Historical Debut of the year (2014). The Polish-language edition was also among the nominees of the Polityka News Magazine History Award (Polish History Book of the Year) in the debut category (2016).

Book The Soldier citizen

Download or read book The Soldier citizen written by Andrew A. Michta and published by MacMillan. This book was released on 1997 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the collapse of communism, the relationship between the Polish armed forces and the Polish government and society has been undergoing a transformation. This book examines that relationship, inspecting the institutional design of the defence establishment in Poland, and focusing on the process through which a former Warsaw Pact coalition warfare partner becomes a Western-style national army. The author uses Poland as a case study to mark the outer limits of change that the West can reasonably expect from post-communist countries with regard to the relationships between the military and civil society. The attempts to identify the general preconditions necessary for democratic civilian control over the military in countries where there is no historical precedent for civilian oversight.

Book Poland and the Postmodern Military

Download or read book Poland and the Postmodern Military written by Steven James Jurek and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like many subfields in comparative politics, civil-military relations experienced a huge shock when communism collapsed in Eastern Europe and later in the Soviet Union. Civil-military relations theories were unable to account for the relatively peaceful transitions from communism to democracy. That is, the armed forces remained on the sidelines despite the social and political revolutions occurring across Eastern Europe. Despite this setback, the field of civil-military relations has rebounded with new ways of examining civil-military arrangements without the pitfall of being dependent upon the type of regime in power. One model that appears to have universal application, the postmodern military model, has thus far only been applied to Western-democratic nations. This dissertation expands the scope of this post-Cold War model to include examination of postcommunist states. The focus is on Poland, to achieve an in-depth understanding of their case, but also includes comparative analysis by including Hungary, Czech Republic, and Romania.

Book Anatomy of Post Communist European Defense Institutions

Download or read book Anatomy of Post Communist European Defense Institutions written by Thomas-Durell Young and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-06-29 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the West won the Cold War, the continuation of the status quo is not a foregone conclusion. The former Soviet-aligned regions outside of Russia -- Ukraine, Poland, Czech Republic, and others -- sit atop decaying armed forces while Russian behavior has grown more and more aggressive, as evidenced by its intervention in Ukraine in recent years. Thomas Young delves into the state of these defense institutions in Central and Eastern Europe, whose resources have declined at a faster rate than their Western neighbors' due to social and fiscal circumstances at home and shifting attitudes in the wider international community. With rigorous attention to the nuances of each region's politics and policies, he documents the status of reform of these armed forces and the role that Western nations have played since the Cold War, as well as identifying barriers to success and which management practices have been most effective in both Western and Eastern capitals. This is essential reading for undergraduates and graduates studying the recent history of Europe in the post-Soviet era, as well as those professionally involved in defense governance in the region.

Book The Politics and Policy of U S Bases in Poland

Download or read book The Politics and Policy of U S Bases in Poland written by Department of Defense and published by . This book was released on 2018-03-10 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study treats Polish-American bilateral relations in the past and present, with special concern for contemporary themes of armaments. This work seizes upon the author's experience in the U.S. Embassy, Warsaw, as well as scholarly analysis. Together with NATO allies, the United States has begun the fielding of an anti-missile system directed against Iran. By dint of policy and geography, the Republic of Poland's status as one of closest allies to the United States put it at the forefront of the candidates to host the interceptor portion of the system. In addition to the U.S. anti-missile installation, the Polish government wants significant U.S. forces stationed in Poland as a symbol of collective defense. As in other cases of the politics of forward defense in NATO in the past and present, the Poles desire an unshakable commitment to forward defense at a time of strategic retrenchment and shifts in the international system. The modifications of the plans for the proposed bases as a result of policy, strategy and budgets were caused by changes of leadership in both the U.S. and Poland; further, such change has arisen about U.S. concerns from Russia and other European countries, to say nothing of the global economic crisis that drastically reduced the ability of the United States and its allies to maintain a defense effort in the face of sharp austerity. Book Civil Military Relations in Post Communist Europe

Download or read book Civil Military Relations in Post Communist Europe written by Timothy Edmunds and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifteen years after the fall of communism, we are able to appraise the results of the multi-faceted postcommunist transition in Central and Eastern Europe with authority. This volume specifically addresses the fascinating area of Civil-Military relations throughout this transitional period. The countries of the region inherited a onerous legacy in this area: their armed forces were part of the communist party-state system and most were oriented towards Cold War missions; they were large in size and supported by high levels of defence spending; and they were based on universal male conscription. Central and eastern European states have thus faced a three fold civil-military reform challenge: establishing democratic and civilian control over their armed forces; implementing organisational reform to meet the security and foreign policy demands of the new era; and redefining military bases for legitimacy in society. This volume assesses the experiences of Poland, Hungary, Latvia, Romania, Croatia, Serbia-Montenegro, Ukraine and Russia in these areas. Collectively these countries illustrate the way in which the interaction of broadly similar postcommunist challenges and distinct national contexts have combined to produce a wide variety of different patterns of civil-military relations. This book was previously published as a special issue of European Security.

Book The Defeat of Solidarity

Download or read book The Defeat of Solidarity written by David Ost and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-07-05 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did the fall of communism and the subsequent transition to capitalism in Eastern Europe affect the people who experienced it? And how did their anger affect the quality of the democratic systems that have emerged? Poland offers a particularly provocative case, for it was here where workers most famously seemed to have won, thanks to the role of the Solidarity trade union. And yet, within a few short years, they had clearly lost. An oppressive communist regime gave way to a capitalist society that embraced economic and political inequality, leaving many workers frustrated and angry. Their leaders first ignored them, then began to fear them, and finally tried to marginalize them. In turn, workers rejected their liberal leaders, opening the way for right-wing nationalists to take control of Solidarity. Ost tells a fascinating story about the evolution of postcommunist society in Eastern Europe. Informed by years of fieldwork in Polish factory towns, scores of interviews with workers, labor activists, and politicians, and an exhaustive reading of primary sources, his new book gives voice to those who have not been heard. But even more, Ost proposes a novel theory about the role of anger in politics to show why such voices matter, and how they profoundly affect political outcomes. Drawing on Poland's experiences, Ost describes lessons relevant to democratization throughout Eastern Europe and to democratic theory in general.

Book Post Communist Poland Contested Pasts and Future Identities

Download or read book Post Communist Poland Contested Pasts and Future Identities written by Ewa Ochman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the reinterpretations of Poland’s past which have been undertaken by Polish national and local elites since the fall of communism. It focuses on remembrance practices and traces the de-commemorating of communism to examine the ways in which collective remembering and forgetting shapes present power constellations in Poland and impacts on foreign and domestic policy. The book outlines the detail of the new hegemonic national myths which are being established but also investigates fragmentation and diversification of commemorative practices at the local level that has the most potential to challenge the dominant vision of national Polish identity, historically centred on martyrdom, heroism and independence, as less relevant to Poland’s new aspirations for the future.
