Book The Great Flood Of 1993

Download or read book The Great Flood Of 1993 written by Stanley Changnon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The flood that affected a third of the United States during the summer of 1993 was the nation's worst, ranking as a once-in-300-years event. It severely tested national, state, and local systems for managing natural resources and for handling emergencies, illuminating both the strengths and weaknesses in existing methods of preparing for and dealing with massive prolonged flooding. Through detailed case studies, this volume diagnoses the social and economic impacts of the disaster, assessing how resource managers, flood forecasters, public institutions, the private sector, and millions of volunteers responded to it. The first comprehensive evaluation of the 1993 flood, this book examines the way in which floods are forecast and monitored, the effectiveness of existing recovery processes, and how the nation manages its floodplains. The volume concludes with recommendations for the future, in hope of better preparing the country for the next flood or other comparable disaster.

This book was released on 2017-12-22 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Federal Response to the Midwest Floods of 1993: Hearing Before the Committee on Environment and Public Works, United States Senate, One Hundred Third Congress, First Session, November 9, 1993 Good morning, everyone. I apologize to the witnesses for the delay. I like to be punctual. I was testifying at another hearing; a hearing on risk assessment held by Senator Johnston, Chairman of the Energy Committee. Today the Environment and Public Works Committee will hear from a number of witnesses regarding this summer's flooding in the Midwest. Specifically, we'll focus on the response of the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Corps of Engineers to that disaster. The flood of 1993 was a devastating event of tremendous magni tude. The costs, not only in dollars but in human suffering, have yet to be fully realized. Disasters of this scope are well beyond the capabilities of State and local authorities and it is these types of events that require Federal action. That Federal response must be timely, efficient and produce the most benefits with the available resources. Both fema and the Corps have worked long and hard to respond to the needs of the flood victims. While there is always room for improvement and lessons to be learned, I applaud the efforts of both of these agencies and, in fact, all of those who contributed to alleviating the suffering caused by the floods. None of us will ever forget the images of those desper ately fighting the rising waters. The flood raises important questions. For instance, should the Federal Government repair levees that have not been properly maintained or should we focus on the creation of nonstructural so lutions like wetlands instead? Moreover, how do we pay for needed repairs to all levees with limited Federal resources? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The 1993 Flood on the Mississippi River in Illinois

Download or read book The 1993 Flood on the Mississippi River in Illinois written by Nani G. Bhowmik and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lessons learned from this flood focus on the performance of the levees, governmental responses, the effects of flood fighting, change in stages due to levee breaches, flood modeling, and the lack of information dissemination to the public on the technical aspects of the flood. These lessons point out information gaps and the need for research in the areas of hydraulics and hydrology, meteorology, sediment transport and sedimentation, surface and ground-water interactions, water quality, and levees. The report presents a comprehensive summary of the 1993 flood as far as climate, hydrology, and hydraulics are concerned.
