Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Midland Counties' Railway Companion: With Topographical Descriptions of the Country Through Which the Line Passes; And Time, Fare, and Distance Tables, Corrected to the 24th August Few towns w joy more than this the advantages of situation. Elevated on the edge of a rock, the aspect of which is southern, it lies wholly Open to the refreshing breezes which fi'equently blow from that quarter, whilst it is sheltered from the more severe winds of the east, west, and north, by several hills which rise gradually above it. It is divided into three parishes, namely, St. Mary's, St. Peter's, and St. Nicholas's. The Market Place may justly be considered as one of the finest in England, being extremely airy and extensive; the sides are ornamented with lofty houses and shops of elegant appearance. The Exchange, which stands at the top, is a neat and handsome edifice. It faces the west, and is stuccoed to represent stone. The large room is equal to any in the provincial towns, being seventy-five feet in length, thirty feet wide, and thirty feet high, with several smaller rooms adjoining, used for public meetings, tea parties, dinners, and other purposes. The illuminated dial outside is of great use to the inhabitants; but the gas caused considerable mischief a short time after its erection, by setting fire to the building, which was near being consumed. The large room suffered materially; but it has since been rebuilt, and made more lofty than it was before. The Police Office is in the Exchange Buildings, as also the Artizan's Library, the Butchers' Shambles being beneath them. The churches in the town are St. Mary's, St. Peter's, St. Nicholas's, St. J ames's, and St. Pauls; the three former are the largest and most beautiful, the two latter are modern erections. St. Mary's contains much that will interest the antiquary and lover of architecture, some parts of it being equal to any within many miles; one archway in particular is very highly spoken of. St. Peter's is situate near to the Railway, and may be seen on the way to the Market Place. There is also a Free Grammar School, endowed by Dame Agnes Mellors, a Lancasterian School, a great number of Chapels, some of them of large dimensions, a number of Alms Houses, founded by different benevolent individuals, a General Hospital, Dispensary, public Reading Rooms, Theatre, Town and County Halls, House of Correction, Riding School, Lunatic Asylum, Roman Catholic Chapel, and other places too numerous to mention. The Castle stands at the outskirts of the town, on the summit of a steep rock; but we shall describe it hereafter, as it may be distinctly seen from the Station-yard from whence the traiu start. The tower of St. Mary's Church is the highest point in4 midland counrms' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
