Book The Microscopy of Drinking Water Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Microscopy of Drinking Water Classic Reprint written by George Chandler Whipple and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Microscopy of Drinking-Water This book has a twofold purpose. It is intended primarily to serve as a guide to the water-analyst and the water-works engineer, describing the methods of microscopical examination, assisting in the identification of the common microscopic organisms found in drinking-water and interpreting the results in the light of environmental studies. Its second purpose is to stimulate a greater interest in the study of microscopic aquatic life and general limnology from the practical and economic standpoint. The work is elementary in character. Principles are stated and briefly illustrated, but no attempt is made to present even a summary of the great mass of data that has accumulated upon the subject during the last decade. The illustrations have been drawn largely from biological researches made at the laboratory of the Boston Water Works and from the reports of the Massachusetts State Board of Health. In considering them one should remember that the environmental conditions of the Massachusetts water-supplies are not universal, and that every water-supply must be studied from the standpoint of its own surroundings. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide to the Microscopical Examination of Drinking Water: With an Appendix the of Examination of Air The author of this work cannot say with many, that the demand for the first edition has been so great as to call speedily for a second. It has, notwithstanding, enjoyed a steady sale; and if slow it is only what might be expected, when the special nature of the subject is taken into account with the little progress science had made in relation to it when the book was first published. The practical utility of the method and arrangement employed in this guide has been tested by its adoption in the Army Medical School for several years, and it has been found that, by its aid, even persons little acquainted with Micro-zoology and Phytology have very readily arrived at the nature and name of objects they had never seen before. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Microscopical Examination of Potable Water The publishers of the science series having asked the writer to prepare a monograph on the Microscopical Examination of Potable Water, I will endeavor to comply; though that a civil engi neer should be expected to prepare anything of value on a subject which has engaged the attention of the most eminent chemists and biologists is something of a surprise. Possibly, however, the fact that studies in this direction have occupied my leisure hours for a number of years, and have led to the production of a number of more or less useful papers thereon, may be to some extent an explanation; but it is sincerely hoped that the expectations of neither publishers nor readers will be raised too high. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Microscope: Its History, Construction, and Application, Being a Familiar Introduction to the Use of the Instrument, and the Study of Microscopical Science In issuing a tenth edition, the Author, by a careful revision of the text, and by an addition of no fewer than fifty new woodcuts, trusts that his book has been made more acceptable and useful to those for whom it was originally intended. Part I. Has been almost wholly rewritten and rearranged. To Mr. Frank Crisp the Author is indebted for Professor Abbe's theory of microscopic vision. To the processes of hardening, section-cutting and staining much in vogue, and which have created a new era in physiological studies, have been assigned the space they seem to merit. Part II. Has been carefully revised; 8. Chapter added on the application of the microscope to mine logical and spectroscopical analysis, and the examina tion of potable water. That his book may for some years to come be found a familiar introduction to the use of the microscope, and the study of microscopical science, is the earnest wish of the Author. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Microscope: And Its Revelations The rapid increase which has recently taken place in the use of the Microscope, - both as an instrument of scientific research, and as a means of gratifying a laudable curiosity and of obtain ing a healthful recreation, - has naturally led to a demand for information, both as to the mode of employing the instrument and its appurtenances, and as to the objects for whose minute examination it is most appropriate. And as none of the existing Treatises, either British or Foreign, on the Microscope and its Uses, have seemed to the Author fully adapted to meet this demand (some of them being almost exclusively concerned with the Microscope itself, and others with some special branch or branches of Microscopic study), he has felt encouraged to carry out a plan which he had formed several years since; by endea voring to combine, within a moderate compass, that information in regard to the use of his tools which is most essential to the working Microscopist, with such an account of the objects best fitted for his study, as might qualify him to comprehend what he observes, and might thus prepare him to benefit science whilst expanding and refreshing his own mind.
