Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Methodist Quarterly Review, 1863, Vol. 45 Of missions, and therefore care nothing about their methods, ) that gain was purchased at the expense of the confidence and sympathy of the best and most active Christians of the country. From this point began his estrangement from the great body of cotemporary evangelical Christians, which continued to the end of his life. This led him to find out other associates, and at the house of his friend Basil Montague he met with a circle of per sons distinguished for learning and independent, perhaps erratic thinking, with Coleridge as oracle and intellectual dictator. Irving was dazzled by a light so new and unwonted, and was led away by the fascination of the discussions to which he was for the most part only a listener. Lordly and aristocratic as he often seemed in the pulpit, and in his writings, he was readily led away by almost any positive will with which he might come into friendly contact, and with characteristic ingenuous ness he would confess his indebtedness to those by whom he had been enthralled. But between himself and Coleridge there was too great a dissimilarity of mental constitution to allow either a close contact, or the exercise of a determinate influence by the one over the other. It is a principle Of the divine economy that the righteous shall be held in everlasting remembrance. While this is primarily true of the remembrance which God cherishes of his own, however little they may be thought of by an nu sympathetic world, yet it also has its application to the Church, which delights to preserve the memory Of her holy men and women. The Methodist Episcopal Church has always manifested a commendable interest in properly written memoirs of her de ceased Bishops. But, unfortunately, in several instances there has been either a lack of data attainable for the production of such memoirs, or a lack of interest or industry on the part of surviving friends in preparing them. The truth of Christianity becomes now a simple question of historic fact, to be decided by the same rules Of evidence which are applied to all history, with this essential difference however, that your facts are sui generis. They are not facts within the field Of nature and experience, and they are consequently burdened by an d improbability. The fundamental ideas Of God, duty, and accountability rest solely upon miracles. You have no substratum Of necessary intuitions or primitive beliefs lying at the basis Of revelation. Your only idea Of vir tue is the doing good to mankind in Obedience to the revealed will of God for the sake of eternal happiness: There can be no unselfish, disinterested love Of God or man.
