Book The Mesotron Component in Cosmic Rays

Download or read book The Mesotron Component in Cosmic Rays written by Vernal Josephson and published by . This book was released on 1942 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Knowledge of Cosmic Rays dates back to the early days of research in radioactivity. As in all fields of research the collection of accurate information about Cosmic Rays has been slow. This has been due, especially in the earlier period, to the lack of apparatus capable of obtaining the necessary data, and as the field of Nuclear Physics was new, no adequate theories had been developed. Within the past two decades, two valuable pieces of apparatus have been developed for the experimental study of Cosmic Rays. These instruments are the coincidence counter circuits employing Geiger-Muller (G.M.) counters and the counter controlled cloud chamber. With these instruments many valuable and accurate data have been obtained. [...]" --

Book Early History of Cosmic Ray Studies

Download or read book Early History of Cosmic Ray Studies written by Yataro Sekido and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the occasion of the International Conference on Cosmic Rays held in Kyoto in August 1979 five aged members of the cosmic ray fraternity, H. Elliot, V. L. Ginzburg, B. Peters, Y. Sekido, and J. A. Simpson met together as a dinner party devoted to the enjoyment of Japanese cuisine and reminiscences of our younger days. This pleasant occasion called to of our own age as well as some eminent seniors not present at the mind the many friends conference whose recollections would have further enriched and enlivened our evening. By the time the dinner came to an end we had agreed that the compilation of a more extensive collection of personal reminiscences would be an interesting and worthwhile undertaking. Accordingly, the next day we held an editorial meeting to draw up a list of potential authors and two of us, the present editors, started work on the project. In putting the book together our intention has been to try to capture and record through these personal accounts something of the atmosphere, the excitement and the frustrations of research in cosmic rays as experienced at first hand by some of the practi tioners in the field. It has never been our intention that it should comprise a systematic history of the subject. Neither, unfortunately, can it be a fully representative collection since practical limits to the size of the volume alone would preclude that.

Book The Fate of the Mesotron microform the Rome Experiment on the Nuclear Absorption of Hard Cosmic Rays

Download or read book The Fate of the Mesotron microform the Rome Experiment on the Nuclear Absorption of Hard Cosmic Rays written by Daniela Monaldi and published by Library and Archives Canada = Bibliothèque et Archives Canada. This book was released on 2005 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1938--1946 period, cosmic ray studies, nuclear physics, and quantum field theory merged in the cluster of researches related to the spontaneous decay of the particle then called mesotron, or meson. For the first time, an elementary particle was observed to be spontaneously unstable. The conceptual framework and the material apparatus far the study of this new phenomenon had to be created and stabilized. Throughout the last part of World War II and its immediate aftermath, a team of young Italian physicists pursued and achieved the "direct" observation of mesotron decays. They worked within the Italian cosmic-ray tradition while successfully innovating upon its instrumentation and experimental methods. The acquired control of mesotron decay, together with the then current understanding of the nature of mesotrons, directed them to the investigation of another new phenomenon, the capture of mesotrons by atomic nuclei. The outcome of their experiment was unexpected and had far-reaching consequences.

Book The Origin of the Concept of Nuclear Forces

Download or read book The Origin of the Concept of Nuclear Forces written by L.M Brown and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 824 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of fundamental nuclear forces emerged gradually during the start of the 1930s and reached our present level of description some time before the 1950s. The Origin of the Concept of Nuclear Forces presents a unified, comprehensive account of the history of this important part of the modern scientific worldview. In addition, the authors, foremost experts in the field, examine the sociological and philosophical aspects of the story in light of the various theories of scientific development. The book contains analyses of published work, archival materials, and original interviews. It will be appealing primarily to historians of science and physicists interested in the roots of their field.

Book The Meson Component of Cosmic Radiation

Download or read book The Meson Component of Cosmic Radiation written by Francis Marcel Charbonnier and published by . This book was released on 1952 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Observations were made of the momentum spectrum of mesons at a 3.3-km altitude and 48 deg N magnetic latitude and in the vertical and at 46.7 deg E and W of the vertical. The spectra covered the 0.34- to 2-Bev/c range. A 12-km average height of meson production was estimated on the basis of a comparison of the spectra obtained from the vertical and at an angle. Predictions were also made of the maximum meson production at low altitudes. Studies of zenith-angle dependence suggested that the number of mesons produced below 3.3 km does not exceed 5% of the number already present. A value of n = 2.45 + or - 0.05 was obtained from the data on the basis of a zenith-angle dependence of the form, j(Zeta)=j(O) cos Nu Zeta. Positive-to-negative ratios of 1.09 + or - 0.06, 1.21 + or - 0.08, and 1.22 + or - 0.07 for 0.34 to 1.0, 1.0 to 1.67 and above 1.67 Bec/c were obtained in the vertical direction. In the 0.34- to 1-Bev/c interval, ratios of 1.40 + or - 0.12 and 0.88 + or - 0.06, respectively, were obtained at the 46.7 deg zenith angle for the west and east directions. The east-west asymmetry was calculated to be 0.205 + or - 0.076 for positive and 0.264 + or - 0.082 for negative particles.

Download or read book Cosmic Rays and Earth written by J.W. Bieber and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year 1998 marked the 50th anniversary of the invention of the neutron monitor, a key research tool in the field of space physics and solar-terrestrial relations. In honor of this occasion a workshop entitled 'Cosmic Rays and Earth' was organized to review the detection of cosmic rays at the surface and in the lower atmosphere of Earth, including the effect that this radiation has on the terrestrial environment. A special focus was the role of neutron monitors in the investigation of this radiation, on the science enabled by the unique dataset of the worldwide network of neutron monitors, and on continuing opportunities to use these data to solve outstanding problems. This book is the principal product of that workshop, integrating the contribu tions of all participants. Following a general summary of the workshop prepared by the editors, the volume leads off with a keynote article by Professor John Simpson describing his invention of the neutron monitor in 1948 and the early scientific discoveries made with this instrument.
