Book excerpt: This is one of Max Freedom Long's latter books. One of the highlights of this book is the review of the self-help scene during the mid-50s, including a mention of Dianetics, as well as General Semantics and other belief systems. Mostly though, this is a practical manual of self-suggestion using the Huna techniques, including detailed instructions as to how the operation works. An appendix discusses the larger context of this in the Huna world.

Book The Sciences in Enlightened Europe

Download or read book The Sciences in Enlightened Europe written by William Clark and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1999-07 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radically reorienting our understanding of the Enlightenment, this book explores the complex relations between "englightened" values and the making of scientific knowledge. Here monsters and automata, barometers and botanical gardens, polite academics and boisterous clubs, plans for violent wars and for universal peace, are all relocated in the landscape of enlightened Europe. The contributors show how changing forms of discipline, machinery, and instrumentation affected the emergence of new kinds of knowledge; consider how institutions of public rate taste and conversation helped provide a common frame for the study of human and nonhuman natures; and explore the regional operations of scientific culture at the geographical fringes of Europe. Covering a wide range of scientific disciplines, both in the principal European countries and in areas peripheral to Europe, the book also includes ample illustrations and an extensive bibliography. Implicated in the rise of both fascism and liberal secularism, the moral and political values that shaped the Enlightenment remain controversial today. Through careful scrutiny of how these values influenced and were influenced by the concrete practices of its sciences, this book gives us an entirely new sense of the Enlightenment. -- from back cover.

Book The Teachings of Huna

Download or read book The Teachings of Huna written by Max Freedom Long and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2022-01-04 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Secret Science Behind Miracles deals with the discovery of an ancient and secret system of workable magic, which, if we can learn to use it as did the native magicians of Polynesia and North Africa, bids fair to change the world … Self-Suggestion and the New Huna Theory of Mesmerism and Hypnosis is a practical manual of self-suggestion using the Huna techniques, including detailed instructions as to how the operation works. Huna (Hawaiian for "secret") is the word adopted by the author in 1936 to describe his theory of metaphysics. "This information concerning those parts of psychology which we have come to call hypnosis, mesmerism and suggestion, is being presented as an addition to the scant literature on the ancient psycho-religious system of the Polynesians called "Huna" or the "Secret"."

Book excerpt: Max Freedom Long's 'Self-Suggestion and the New Huna Theory of Mesmerism and Hypnosis' delves into the realm of mind-body connections, exploring the power of suggestion and the Huna theory of healing through hypnotic techniques. Long's writing is clear and concise, making complex concepts accessible to readers interested in psychology and alternative healing practices. Drawing from his research on Polynesian shamanism, Long provides a unique perspective on the intersection of Western psychology and ancient spiritual traditions. This book is a valuable resource for those seeking to understand the potential of the human mind in relation to health and well-being. Max Freedom Long, known for his work on the Huna philosophy, was a researcher and author fascinated by the ways in which indigenous cultures approached healing and spiritual practices. His background in anthropology and psychology informed his exploration of hypnotism and mesmerism, leading to the creation of the Huna theory. Long's expertise in these areas shines through in 'Self-Suggestion and the New Huna Theory of Mesmerism and Hypnosis,' making it a comprehensive and insightful read for anyone interested in alternative healing methods. I highly recommend 'Self-Suggestion and the New Huna Theory of Mesmerism and Hypnosis' to readers intrigued by the intersection of psychology, spirituality, and holistic healing. Book Huna and Self Suggestion

Download or read book Huna and Self Suggestion written by Max Freedom Long and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-01-10 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using self-suggestion is a simple process which may be divided into three steps: First, quite naturally, one must decide what is to be suggested to the low self by the middle self - to the subconscious by the conscious mind self. Second, one relaxes the body, stills the trains of thought that may be running through the mind, and, when the low self is in this way made ready to accept suggestion, the third step is taken. This third step is to give the suggestion to the low self either aloud or silently. One may succeed in getting some response from the low self on the very first attempt to use self-suggestion, but usually it takes a little period of practice before one gets a full and swift response. One learns to crawl, then to walk, and then to run. An attempt to reverse the process and start with the running cannot help but be a waste of time. (From Chapter 4) Get Your Copy Today!

Book The Hidden Side of Things

Download or read book The Hidden Side of Things written by Charles Webster Leadbeater and published by BoD - Books on Demand. This book was released on 2023-01-31 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " The term ` occultism' is one which has been much misunderstood. In the mind of the ignorant it was, even recently, synonymous with magic, and its students were supposed to be practitioners of the black art, veiled in flowing robes of scarlet covered with cabalistic signs, sitting amidst uncanny surroundings with a black cat as a familiar, compounding unholy decoctions by the aid of satanic evocations. Even now, and among those whom education has raised above such superstition as this, there still remains a good deal of misapprehension. For them its derivation from the Latin word occultus ought to explain at once that it is the science of the hidden; but they often regard it contemptuously as nonsensical and unpractical, as connected with dreams and fortune-telling, with hysteria and necromancy, with the search for the elixir of life and the philosopher' s stone. Students, who should know better, perpetually speak as though the hidden side of things were intentionally concealed, as though knowledge with regard to it ought to be in the hands of all men, but was being deliberately withheld by the caprice or selfishness of a few; whereas the fact is that nothing is or can be hidden from us except by our own limitations, and that for every man as he evolves the world grows wider and wider, because he is able to see more and more of its grandeur and its loveliness..."

Book Classic Horror

Download or read book Classic Horror written by Anne DeLong and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2018-06-15 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A valuable resource for readers exploring the classic horror genre, this book presents primary source documents alongside analysis in an examination of the social, political, and economic factors reflected in 19th century Gothic literature. The nineteenth century was a time of social, cultural, and economic change; revolutionary scientific developments; and enduring imaginative works. This book explores the classic horror genre of Gothic literature in its historical and social contexts. It contains chapters on four major works of classic horror, with each chapter providing a mix of background information, primary source historical documents, and analysis that will appeal as much to high school and college students as to lovers of literature and the Victorian era. Coleridge's The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is contextualized through documents pertaining to British imperialism, Antarctic Exploration, and the burgeoning environmentalist movement. Shelley's Frankenstein is explored through sections on galvanism, electricity, grave robbing, and the vitalist debate. Stevenson's The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is read through explanations of nineteenth-century drug use and addiction and early theories of psychology and criminology. Stoker's Dracula is studied with reference to such topics as mesmerism, clairvoyance, alienism, medical ethics, xenophobia, and Victorian pseudoscience.

Book Science Fact and Science Fiction

Download or read book Science Fact and Science Fiction written by Brian Stableford and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-09-06 with total page 758 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science fiction is a literary genre based on scientific speculation. Works of science fiction use the ideas and the vocabulary of all sciences to create valid narratives that explore the future effects of science on events and human beings. Science Fact and Science Fiction examines in one volume how science has propelled science-fiction and, to a lesser extent, how science fiction has influenced the sciences. Although coverage will discuss the science behind the fiction from the Classical Age to the present, focus is naturally on the 19th century to the present, when the Industrial Revolution and spectacular progress in science and technology triggered an influx of science-fiction works speculating on the future. As scientific developments alter expectations for the future, the literature absorbs, uses, and adapts such contextual visions. The goal of the Encyclopedia is not to present a catalog of sciences and their application in literary fiction, but rather to study the ongoing flow and counterflow of influences, including how fictional representations of science affect how we view its practice and disciplines. Although the main focus is on literature, other forms of science fiction, including film and video games, are explored and, because science is an international matter, works from non-English speaking countries are discussed as needed.
