Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Merchant of Venice and Julius Caesar The help which the beginner in Shakespeare study needs, the wise teacher will be careful to give judiciously, having in view the formation of mental habits rather than prepara tion for impending scholastic tests. Examinations have, in our educational system, so far transcended their legitimate function of stimulus and guidance, that they are at last fairly installed as ends in themselves, and we constantly hear of preparing for them and passing them as the business of the school. This extravagant homage to examinations warps the ideals of teachers and vitiates their methods in many studies. In English it has begotten the highly anno tated text, which contemplates an emergency of hurry and is meant to preclude the necessity of stopping to think. Book JULIUS CAESAR

Download or read book JULIUS CAESAR written by William Shakespeare and published by Musaicum Books. This book was released on 2017-12-06 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The play is based on historical events surrounding the conspiracy against the ancient Roman leader Julius Caesar (c.100-44B.C.) and the civil war that followed his death. Shakespeare portrays Caesar's assassination on the Ides of March (March 15) by a group of conspirators who feared the ambitious leader would turn the Roman Republic into a tyrannical monarchy. Shakespeare' s main source for the play is Plutarch's famous biography The Life of Julius Caesar, written in Greek in the 1st century and translated into English in 1579 by Sir Thomas North. Life of William Shakespeare is a biography of William Shakespeare by the eminent critic Sidney Lee. This book was one of the first major biographies of the Bard of Avon. It was published in 1898, based on the article contributed to the Dictionary of National Biography. William Shakespeare (1564 – 1616) was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon". His extant works, including some collaborations, consist of about 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and a few other verses, the authorship of some of which is uncertain. Sir Sidney Lee (1859 – 1926) was an English biographer and critic. He was a lifelong scholar and enthusiast of Shakespeare. His article on Shakespeare in the fifty-first volume of the Dictionary of National Biography formed the basis of his Life of William Shakespeare. This full-length life is often credited as the first modern biography of the poet.

Book excerpt: This volume includes the text of Twelfth Night as prepared and annotated by David Swain for The Broadview Anthology of British Literature, and is accompanied by the excellent introduction and supplementary materials from the anthology. The diverse and extensive appendices acquaint readers with Shakespeare’s sources and contextualize the play within Elizabethan society. The appendices include an excerpt from Barnabe Riche’s “Of Apollonius and Silla,” Shakespeare’s primary source of inspiration for the play; selections from Galen, Plato, and others illustrating Elizabethan attitudes toward gender and sexuality; excerptions illuminating contemporary moral discomfort with the theatre, such as Philip Stubbes’s “Of Stage-plays and Interludes, with their wickedness”; and pieces on music and duelling that illustrate cultural conventions important to the interpretation of Twelfth Night. This is one of several Broadview Anthology of British Literature Editions being released this year; those wishing to teach the text will have the option of including the convenient stand-alone book as part of a specially-priced shrink-wrapped package together with a volume of the anthology.

Book Shakespeare s Tragedy of Julius C sar

Download or read book Shakespeare s Tragedy of Julius C sar written by William Shakespeare and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare's Tragedy of Julius Cæsar This edition of Julius Cœsar is especially intended for teachers and students, but it is hoped that the general reader may find it useful. It is not expected that all the notes will be alike valuable to all; but it is believed that most readers, whatever their object may be in reading the play, will find in them something helpful. In the following respects it will be found to differ from other school editions: - 1. The notes are all designed to stimulate rather than supersede thought. 2. The results of the latest etymological and critical researches, for the most part, are given. 3. It states concisely the opinions of some of the best critics on nearly every disputed interpretation. 4. It presents some of the best methods of studying English literature. 5. It contains a chronological table of the important events in Cæsar's life. It is proper to add that we adhere more closely than other editors to the earliest approved texts. In some cases, as in Act I, sc. iii, line 10, the original reading imparts wonderful vividness and power. As in our editions of Hamlet, Macbeth, and The Merchant of Venice, we follow Rolfe in the numbering of the lines.
