Excerpt: ... civilly refused Admission: They laid their Hands on their Swords, and averred that as they were Masters of the Citadel and Town, they would be Masters of the Galleys also, and were resolved to enter by Force. The Officers were therefore constrained to admit all that came. Things were thus circumstanced, when one Day an English Colonel, whose Name I forget, had a Conference with me; importing, that Mr Hill, who was constituted Governor of Dunkirk by Queen Anne, might be ignorant of our Detention, and the Cause of it; he concluded, by advising me to address him by a Petition, informing him of our Situation, and imploring his Redress. I accordingly drew up a Petition in the best Manner 1 was able, and had it presented to Mr Hill. The next Day this Gentleman sent his Secretary to me, with Instructions to say that his Excellency was pleased with my Information I had given him of our Detention, and that he would do his utmost to set us, free. But as it was out of his Power to do this without the Queen, his Mistress's Leave, he would write to her Majesty; and that her Orders which he assured himself would be in our Favour, would determine his Actions with regard to our Deliverance. He desired us to wait a Fortnight with Patience, and then we might be sure, if not of Redress, at least of having all Methods try'd which might be consistent with Justice. The Secretary added, that if we had Occasion for any Sums of Money, my Lord offered his Purse, which we might command. I reply'd that we wanted nothing but his Lordship's Protection; and that our sincerest Acknowledgments-were due to his Lordship for his Intentions to serve us. I let the Brethren know of this Transaction, at the same time admonishing them to be on their guard in admitting the...

Book Church and Society in Eighteenth Century France Volume 2 The Religion of the People and the Politics of Religion

Download or read book Church and Society in Eighteenth Century France Volume 2 The Religion of the People and the Politics of Religion written by John McManners and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 1998-08-27 with total page 880 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second volume begins with a Section on the religion of the people. The clergy offered the liturgical services, sermons, evangelistic missions, and the offices sanctifying birth, marriage, and death; distinctions are made between what they intended and how their ministrations were popularly interpreted and incorporated into the social order. Statistical soundings concerning the extent of religious practice and the degree of conviction involved are evaluated. Further chapters deal with processions, pilgrimages, and popular practices and superstitions, with hermits and confraternities, with the impact of reading the Bible and other edifying literature in an age of increasing literacy. Finally comes a view of the twilight world of magic and sorcery. Throughout this Section the comments of theologians and thinkers of the Enlightenment are recorded, whether in coincidence or contradiction. The next section deals with the efficacy of the confessional and the role of the casuistry of the Church in attempting to mould sexual mores, business practices, and in the world of the theatre. In the next two Sections, the role of religious issues in political affairs is detailed. An overview of the Jansenist quarrel and of the activities of the Jesuits brings in the story of the struggle between Crown and Parlement, while an extended portrayal of the life of the Protestant and Jewish communities leads to the history of the debate on toleration, involving the Gallican Church in political interventions and controversy. Throughout the two volumes the rising forces of anticlericalism and the tensions within the ecclesiastical establishment have been recorded, and these themes come to their climax in a final section on the role played by churchmen in the coming of the Revolution.

Excerpt: ... old Man chose rather to prevent Mischief than divulge it when perpetrated. He applies to the Captain, and requests Permission to resign his Office; I am old, said he, and incapable of continuing in my Employment; my Sight and my Memory fail me; let me again grasp the Oar: my Duty at it will soon rid me of a Life of Pain, and my Country of an useless Member of Society. While he was thus speaking the delinquent Domestics, fearing that he was making a Discovery of their Designs, and knowing that he had evidence against them, strove each who should be first in Discovery of the whole Plot, the better to obtain a separate Pardon. In a Word, this Conspiracy, which was formed to supplant the Protestant Slave, only fixed him the firmer in the Captain's Favour: Which on this Account, was, in some Measure, extended to four more of us, who were of the reformed Religion, aboard the same Galley. In the Beginning of July 1702, our six Galleys left the Harbour of Dunkirk, and rowed into that of Ostend. From hence we made frequent Excursions, when the Sea was calm along the Coasts of Blankenburg and Sluys: From thence we returned to Nleuport, and the Mouth of the Channel.. One Day, when the Sea was perfectly serene, we observed a Squadron of twelve Dutch Men of War, becalmed at about five leagues Distance from Nieuport. We were ordered to reconnoitre; and perceiving one of them separated from the rest, were resolved with our six Galleys to cannonade it. The Captain of the Man of War was equally ignorant and obstinate. As he perceived us approaching, he only ordered his Men to prepare Places of Reception for the French Prisoners, which should be taken in the Engagement. He was it seems deceived by our Appearence at a Distance, as a Galley sails very...
