The question can be determined only by a systematic examination and comparison such as I have attempted in this book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Ecclesiastical Architecture in England It is impossible to write on such subjects Without a moral tone, though direct moralizing may be avoided; unless indeed one can divest oneself of the feeling that they have a moral, and this is a power which the author by no means covets. He feels that the moral here is a wholesome one. Every instance in which we are brought into connection with those to Whom we owe our very existence as individuals, and as a nation, ought to make us feel our fellowship rather than our distance, and to teach us a proper estimate of ourselves and of our fathers. If there are many things which tend to lessen the influence even of our common Christianity in making us one with them, it will be useful to view them as engaged in a work, of which we in herit the advantages: and if we are superior, as we are and ought to be, to our remote ancestors, in many things, - in the arts of life, in habits of society, in soundness of objective faith and if we are quite as conscious of this as is consistent with charity and humility, it may be a wholesome exercise for us to pursue a study which will present them to us as unquestionably our superiors in one branch of the arts, and in one of the fruits of true religion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Present State of Ecclesiastical Architecture in England HE revival of our ancient parochial church architecture is a subject which occupies much attention at the present time; after three centuries of demolition and neglect, the solemn structures raised by our Catholic ancestors are being gradually restored to somewhat of their original appearance, and buildings which but a few years since were considered as unsightly and barbarous erections of ignorant times, are now become the theme for general eulogy, and models for imita tion. To the English Catholic there is no class of religious edifices of greater interest than the ancient parish churches of this country. The are admirably suited to the present wants and necessities of the Church, nor is it possible to adopt, con sistently, any other models for the greater portion of our ecclesiastical buildings. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Britain is a treasure trove of medieval architecture. Almost every village and town in the land has a church that was built during the period, whose history is legible – to those who know how to look – in every arch, capital, roof vault, and detail of window tracery. By learning how to identify the stylistic phases that resulted from shifts in architectural fashion, it is possible to date each part of a church to within a decade or two; this book introduces all the key features of each succeeding style, from Anglo-Saxon and Norman through to the three great gothic styles, Early English, Decorated and Perpendicular. It will be indispensable to anyone who enjoys exploring medieval churches, and who wants to understand and appreciate their beauty more deeply.

Book London Churches Ancient and Modern Vol 1

Download or read book London Churches Ancient and Modern Vol 1 written by Thomas Francis Bumpus and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-26 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from London Churches Ancient and Modern, Vol. 1: Medieval and Early Renaissance But yet there are remains of mediaeval times, which should be highly prized and carefull studied, and in which the history of English Gothic architecture may be read from the Nor man Conquest to its decline and fall under the Tudors; and, what is more, each representative of the styles through which it successively passed those beautiful gradations from Norman to Per pendicular, in which the germ of each develop ment is to be discovered in the antecedent work is the best of its kind. These I now desire to mention, in as brief and generalizing a manner as possible, by way of pre paration for a more detailed account in subse quent chapters, and to win for them the attention of such of my readers as may desire to visit them, either as an agreeable pastime or a profitable study, as their knowledge of ecclesiology may be more or less matured. This done, I shall proceed to trace the history of church-building in London from the era of Classicism, which commenced with that memorable event of 1666, through the period of debasement under the later Hanoverian rule to the time when it began once more to raise its head within the memory of many yet living. I may be allowed to state here that the expres sions Norman, Early English, Decorated and Per pendicular, as denoting the successive periods of English Gothic architecture, were, if not actually invented, always employed by those two pioneers in the study of its true principles, Thomas Rick man and John Henry Parker, and, if somewhat comprehensive, are at least very suggestive and appropriate.
