Book excerpt: The presence and intensity of media influences television, radio, music, computers, films, videos, and the Internet are increasingly recognized as an important part of the social ecology of children and youth, and these influences have become more visible and volatile in recent decades. Research that explores the level and effects of media influences calls for measurements of the quantity and character of exposure to a variety of potentially overlapping media sources, an analysis of the content of the media output, and examination of the social context and relationships that are associated with the media experience. Recognizing the importance of this research, the Board on Children, Youth, and Families, under the auspices of the National Research Council and the Institute of Medicine, and with the sponsorship of the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation, held a workshop in March 2006. Its purpose was twofold: to examine the quality of the measures used in studies of the effects of media on children's health and development and to identify gaps in both research and practice. The goal was for a variety of experts to consider steps and strategies that could move this research forward and improve its utility for helping parents, practitioners, and policy makers guide young people in navigating a media-rich environment. Studying Media Effects on Children and Youth provides a summary of that discussion, supplemented with information from two papers prepared for the workshop. It begins with an examination of the potential impact of media exposure, followed by a description of the basic research questions and the methods currently used to study them. Methodological questions and challenges and theoretical approaches are described; they are discussed from the perspective of other kinds of epidemiological research. This report closes with a discussion of future directions for the field.

The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. Their contributions reflect not only widely divergent political orientations and value systems, but also three distinct domains of inquiry into human motivation and behavior -- social scientific, psychodynamic (or psychoanalytical), and clinical practice. Each of these three domains is privy to important evidence and insights that need to transcend epistemological and methodological boundaries if understanding of the subject is to improve dramatically. In keeping with this notion, the editors asked the authors to go beyond a summary of findings, and lend additional distinction to the book by applying the "binoculars" of their particular perspective and offering suggestions as to the implications of their findings. One of the goals of the conference that resulted in this book was consensus building in the area of media and family. From examining the findings and insights of a diverse group of scholars, it seems that consensus building in several areas is a distinct possibility. Addressing the concerns of educators about the influence of the mass media of communication -- entertainment programs in particular -- on children and the welfare of the nuclear family, this volume projects directions for superior programming, especially for educational television. The influence of sex and violence on children and adults is given much attention, and the development of moral judgment and sexual expectations, among other things, is explored. Book excerpt: Recent research discusses the vital role parents play in the mediation of young children's screen media experiences. Investigations suggest that parental mediation with children during joint viewing, otherwise known as co-viewing, episodes enhances attention and comprehension to program content, thereby potentially eliciting learning. This study explores parent's beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors regarding young children and screen media use and exposure. Specifically, this investigation examines the contextual nature of children's screen media experiences through parent responses to questions regarding their child's household screen media use. Parents of 21 children age 0 to 5 years old completed questionnaires detailing parental beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors regarding the screen media use of their child. The majority of parents reported having neutral attitudes toward children's screen media use. Responses also indicated that parents value screen media as an educational tool for their children, and that parents believe it is important to watch programs with their children. Parents reported using a combination of mediation strategies as opposed to using one particular mediation strategy most frequently during children's screen media viewing episodes. Findings from this study may lead to future investigations into the contextual nature of young children's screen media experiences. Young children encounter screen media devices such as TV, DVD, and video in their environment beginning early in life. As with diets of food and physical activity, the habits of an individual's screen media diet may become established early in life as well. The study of young children and their screen media consumption is relatively new (when compared for example to research literature regarding print media and children) and could offer empowering information to those responsible for the health and well-being of young children. Findings gathered from observations of screen viewing experiences taken from an ecological perspective could benefit health care providers, parents, educators, and policy makers. Understanding the factors involved in young children's screen media experiences could provide knowledge capable of facilitating appropriate decision making regarding young children's screen media use and exposure. Parents, educators, healthcare providers, and policy makers can impact children's media consumption patterns early on by engaging in adequately informed discussions guided by findings from experimental and natural setting investigations of interactions between parents and children during household screen media use. If, for example, pediatricians are guided by research findings and discuss the implications associated with household screen media use and children's development with parents during office visits, parents may in turn use this information to guide their decisions about children's screen media use and exposure. This information could also be used to guide early childhood educators and their use of screen media products with the young children in their care.
