This book was released on 2019-09-27 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Palgrave Pivot contextualizes Henry George as an important and uniquely American figure in the fields of economics and political economy, with special emphasis on the frontier and innovation. This book discusses George’s concept of rent as the result of economic progress, explains George’s argument that the rise in rents caused by economic progress in turn generates inequality and poverty, and examines the relevance of these ideas in today’s financialized global economy. This book adds to the very necessary discussion of whether our current financial industry is a benefit or a drain on human economic well-being.

Download or read book Thomas Robert Malthus written by David Reisman and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-10 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Robert Malthus (1766-1834) was a leading figure in the British classical school of economics, best-known for extending the insights of Adam Smith at a time of revolutionary improvements in agriculture and industry. This book explores the way in which he accounted for the tendency to overpopulation, the exhaustion of arable land and the deficiency of effective demand. Malthus relied on historical and empirical evidence in the spirit of Bacon and Hume, but also backed up his data with a priori hypotheses that link him to his contemporary, David Ricardo. Malthus was strongly in favour of free trade, the minimal State, the gold standard and the abolition of poverty relief. Always a pragmatist, however, he was just as much in favour of public education, contra-cyclical public works and a safety net of tariffs and bounties to encourage national self-sufficiency with regard to food. He was both an economist and a clergyman and saw the two roles as interconnected. Malthus believed that a benevolent Deity had created vice and misery in order to shake human beings out of their natural indolence that would otherwise have condemned them to still greater distress. This title provides a clear and comprehensive examination of Malthus’s economic and social thought. It will be of interest to students and scholars alike.

Download or read book Land Acquisition and Compensation in India written by Sattwick Dey Biswas and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-12-17 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses development and land acquisitions in India and analyzes a conceptual framework based on “paradox of values” and “plural value of land.” The research links the issue of valuation to its roots in classic economic theory and to its individual perception. The project offers an insightful perspective on current challenges of urbanization and development in the Global South, where land use regimes are in a highly dynamic transition to allow for urban amenities, housing and industrial land. The author concludes with a derived scheme or framework that addresses various potentials to better address values of land during land acquisition. It is an ideal book for anyone interested in land markets, land appraisal and land economics and land acquisition in the Global South.
